25.01.2022 Still Life Its a Challenge By: Karin Bowler To read our full article on STILL LIFE ITS A CHALLENGE, visit http://www.ozartfinder.com/ozartfinder-news. ... Producing a high quality realist painting is a true labour of love requiring many hours at the easel and endless patience. To achieve a high level of competency, realist artists need a disciplined approach and a devotion to the study of light, colour, perspective and composition. In the hands of a skilled artist, few styles can inspire us more than a beautifully executed still life. Joan Denner is one such artist and it was great to see Joans oil painting Lemons selected as a prize winner in Australian Artist magazines recent Art Prize Challenge. Lemons is a beautiful work. Joans skilful use of light and complimentary colours, particularly the lemon against the blue, is quite stunning. Careful attention to composition has resulted in a work where the viewer is constantly drawn back to the main point of interest, the lemons. The use of the curled lemon peel to enhance the focal point is further evidence of Joans wonderful skill. You can view a range of Joans wonderful paintings on the OzArt Finder website at www.ozartfinder.com/artists/joan-denner . Her oil painting Composition with Grapes is a personal favourite and is another great example of Joans skilful use of space and light.

23.01.2022 Making a Difference by Moyra Le Blanc Smith To read our full article on Making a Difference visit http://www.ozartfinder.com/ozartfinder-news. I am an artist who is passionate about Australia. I paint nature inspired oil paintings and for some time now I have been hoping to find a way to make a difference in some way, to how our beautiful Australia is cared for and to leave a better country for our children and grandchildren. When I heard the story of the plight of the ...tiny Leadbeaters Possum, it tugged at my heart-strings and I knew that this was a cause I needed to support. Why not use my art to make a difference to the survival of this creature and along with it, the other animals and plants which will be nurtured in the process? Leadbeaters Possum is a seriously cute little animal which lives in Victorias Mountain Ash forests. Now it is on the Critically Endangered list due to loss of habitat from clear-fell logging and bushfires. My first solo exhibition Inspired by Nature will be held for the month of April at Eagles Nest Gallery in Aireys Inlet on the Great Ocean Road. The Gallery owner Nadia Rocchi and I have collaborated to donate 20% of the sales from this exhibition to the Friends of the Leadbeaters Possum. See more

22.01.2022 PAINTING IN ITALY with Kathy Karas To read our full article on Painting in Italy with Kathy Karas, visit http://www.ozartfinder.com/ozartfinder-news. Artist and tutor Kathy Karas has just returned from her latest Painting in Italy tour where with her group she stayed and painted in the medieval town of Cortona, Tuscany then on to Venice for a further 5 days to explore and paint this magnificent old city.... It was just delightful to immerse ourselves in art in these beautiful areas of Italy with the diversity of both the regions and with the rich history to be explored in paint. On this recent tour to Italy, Kathys group stayed at a beautiful villa in Cortona, famous for being the town where Under the Tuscan Sun was made. The group stayed for 6 days where they painted the cobble stoned streets, old character infused buildings along with the lovely parterre gardens of the town. During the stay in Cortona, the group enjoyed sightseeing to other Tuscan towns with tours to the vineyards sampling the local wines and cuisine. There were many photo opportunities to take home to develop into future paintings and of course time for shopping. Then on to Venice for the second part of this tour...The experience in Venice is quite a contrast to the ambient life in Tuscany. Venice is such a unique place and of course can be quite busy but the advantage of staying a length of time right in the centre of Venice is that I have sussed out some quieter spots to paint that still have everything required to paint some nice scenes. An early morning session was great to capture the sunrise in St Marks Square and at the Pier with little interruption. Actually we had it all to ourselves, it was lovely! While in Venice for 5 days the group explored many of the sights. Along with painting sessions there was plenty of time to enjoy this great city. Short trips on the vaporetto (ferry) took them to some great locations. A visit to the Peggy Guggenheim museum at Academia was a highlight as was exploring the many galleries and artisan shops of this area. A visit to Burano with its colourful buildings to sketch, paint and explore finished the tour off with happy memories for all. Kathys next painting workshop is to Norfolk Island this November where she will be conducting en plein air workshops in acrylics. For information and to book please contact Norfolk Island Travel Centre [email protected] www.kathy-karas.artistwebsites.com

21.01.2022 Scratchboard, - What is it? by Rikki Fisher To read our full article on Scratchboard visit http://www.ozartfinder.com/ozartfinder-news. Scratchboard is a flat board coated with a thin layer of clay and then covered with black Indian ink. A scratch tool is used to scratch through the layer of black ink revealing the white clay underneath. You can buy board that is pre inked, called scratchboard or un-inked called clayboard. There are also boards that are coloured beneath... the black ink. You can use a variety of tools, basically anything that scratches. Nibs, steel wool, fibreglass brushes, emery boards or tattoo needles all have their uses. As I vary the pressure on the tool I get some tonal range. When it comes to layering to create form and tone, I use an airbrush as I have found it gives me a softer, smoother gradation quickly. Quick is the motivating word for me as scratching can be a slow painstaking process. On the other hand it is a very forgiving medium; when you make a mistake you can brush or airbrush over the section with black ink and redo it. Rikki often conducts workshops and demonstrations upon request. She is also available for private tuition. Be sure to view Rikkis amazing scratchboard artwork at http://www.ozartfinder.com/artists/rikki-fisher/ and on her website, http://www.rikkifisher.com.

17.01.2022 Our Featured Artists for March by Karin Bowler This month were delighted to feature the works of the following three outstanding artists. To read our full article on Our Featured Artists for March, visit https://www.ozartfinder.com//our-featured-artists-for-mar/... Ron Reynolds Melbourne based artist, Ron Reynolds, started out as a realist painter. His style has evolved into a more contemporary abstract impressionist style. Most of his works are completed in the studio from reductive compositional drawings. His style is unique and lively and his paintings have a strong underlying structure achieved by line and colour. Ron conducts painting classes in all mediums during school terms in Lower Templestowe, Victoria. These classes are designed for students and artists wishing to develop their work in an encouraging and innovative environment. Camilo Esparza Camilo grew up in Bogota, Colombia and started painting and printmaking at a very early age under the mentoring of his Dad, the Colombian Artist, Eduardo Esparza. In 2008 Camilo travelled to South Australia to take up further studies and soon after decided to make Adelaide his home. Camilos latest series called Marine World is inspired by the marine wildlife of Australia and some imaginary creatures as well. His intention is to send an awareness message of protection of marine species, especially those endangered. Michelle Ripari Michelle is a Melbourne based artist who has always loved drawing. She completed a Bachelor of Teaching and also a Graduate Diploma of Special Education and moved from Bendigo to work as a teacher in a specialist autistic school. 16.01.2022 Featured Artists for June 2019 by Karin Bowler This month our special focus is on Coloured Pencils, a medium increasing in popularity among professional artists. Artists have appreciated the obvious convenience of portability and of course the immediacy of coloured pencils. Unlike many other mediums, pencils arent messy or require time to dry, making them flexible with modern life. This flexibility is no doubt a factor in their popularity, but probably more importantly is... the significant improvement in both the quality and variety now available. The most common and important advice art tutors offer is to invest in the best quality available. Top brands are equal in pigment quality and lightfastness to any other medium. High quality products, which come in both soluble and non-soluble versions, layer beautifully maintaining a brightness and glow. The highest quality pencils have great permanency and can be used on a variety of surfaces including wood. They also hold the perfect consistency to produce layers of rich colours as well as being firm enough to hold a long point essential for detailed work. For June we are proud to present three highly skilled colour pencil artists; Richard Klekociuk, Janet Matthews and Nola Sindel. We know youll be interested in finding out more about each of their individual artistic journeys and their outstanding achievements, so please go to https://www.ozartfinder.com/ozartfinder-news/ to read our full article and to view their amazing artwork.

15.01.2022 Colour in Your Life If you love pastels, be sure to watch the latest episode of Colour in Your Life featuring Gippsland artist, David Alldridge. The program, hosted by Graeme Stevenson, provides a fascinating insight into Davids creative process and techniques. If youre an aspiring pastel artist, youll pick up some great pointers including tips on keeping your artwork clean during the process (something many beginners find difficult with pastels). Regardless of your pr...eferred medium or experience, Davids demonstration provides valuable information on all aspects of creating a work of art. These beautiful creatures feature in much of his work where he accurately and superbly captures their translucent colour and texture. 04.01.2022 Featured Artists for July by Karin Bowler For July, our Featured Artists segment showcases the artwork of three very talented artists; contemporary watercolour artist, Glenys Gaston and wildlife artists Christelle Grey and Kathy Medbury. To read our full article on Featured Artists for July, visit https://www.ozartfinder.com/news/featured-artists-for-July/ We hope you enjoy viewing their amazing artwork and finding out more about their individual artistic journeys. Chri...stelle is a wildlife artist who works in watercolours and oils. Although mostly self taught, Christelle has attended many workshops for inspiration and to expand her artistic skills. She initially found watercolours to be a challenging and unforgiving medium, but once mastered, found it to be so very satisfying. Christelle moved from South Africa to Australia in 1998. Growing up in South Africa gave her the opportunity for frequent visits to National Parks from which she developed a deep appreciation and connection with the wildlife of her home country. Whilst her favourite subject matter is the wildlife of Africa, she also enjoys painting portraits of people and pets and welcomes commissions for pet portraits. Christelle will be exhibiting her work in November at the CSTUDIOS Art Gallery, Newcastle. Kathy is a well established artist, illustrator and sculptor, who started her career in art at an early age of 16. Working as a Graphic Artist she designed and produced art for the Department of Defence and Armstrongs Advertising Agency. She then worked for primary school producing designs for school jackets, catalogues, letterheads and logos. During this time she also illustrated five childrens books. From 2012 she joined several local art groups in which she has successfully exhibited her work and has also won numerous awards including Best Sculpture Award at the Sunbury Art Society shows for three consecutive years. Although Kathy is very versatile in the artwork she creates, she has a special talent for capturing the beauty of our Australian birds, some of which are sadly on the brink of extinction. Glenys is a contemporary artist based in Bendigo, Victoria. She paints solely in watercolours and for many years has been truly fascinated by the magical and often unexpected elements of this unpredictable medium. Her artwork predominantly consists of villages, people and forests often painted in a rather quirky, but very unique style. She develops each work of art by applying multiple layers of paint taking a great deal of time and patience. Her colourful, imaginative paintings are well thought out compositions to ensure a perfect balance of colour, shapes and design. In addition to many successful group and solo exhibitions held throughout Victoria, other achievements include the publication of a 12-page watercolour demonstration published in the Australian Artist magazine in 2010. 03.01.2022 THE SECRET IS OUT If you havent heard of Hydrocryl you might be surprised to learn that theyve been making acrylic paints right here in Australia for over 40 years. To read our full article on THE SECRET IS OUT, visit http://www.ozartfinder.com/ozartfinder-news. ... What makes Hydrocryl different from other brands is its strategy of sticking with a product range consisting of single pigment colours only. As Hydrocryls, Alex Holzer explained, this means that when using say Hydrocryls Phthalo Blue as your base, you are getting a powerful, bold, beautiful blue and only BLUE. There are no hints of yellows and reds that you may find in brands that offer a wide range of hues. The purity of colours enables artists to consistently recreate their favoured blends. The intensity and vibrancy of Hydrocryls single pigment colours are really quite amazing. Hydrocryl is a great supporter of the Australian art community and, with the increasing concern about exposure to chemicals, its also great to know that Hydrocryl are committed to ensuring their products do not contain any toxic pigments. To help spread the word about Hydrocryl, were pleased to host the Hydrocryl Art Prize. Our judges Helen Cottle, Ron Reynolds and Rick Matear will be viewing acrylic paintings posted on the OzArt Finder website and each will choose a winning artwork. The competition closes on 15 September so be sure to upload any new works soon. The winners in each category will receive a range of Hydrocryl products. Well be talking to a range of artists about their experience with Hydrocryl in the coming weeks so please stay tuned.

03.01.2022 ITS ABOUT TIME By Karin Bowler To read our full article on TIM K JONES ITS ABOUT TIME, visit http://www.ozartfinder.com/ozartfinder-news. Appropriately titled About Time, the first solo exhibition of Tim K Jones is finally here. Tims collection is such an eclectic mix of style, media and subject that it is difficult to summarise his work. But a common thread, and one of the joys of viewing Tims works, is the narrative that often accompanies his wonderful image...ry. With many of his works, Tim shares with us the inspiration behind the image. We could be left to simply ponder the visual clues and arrive at our own interpretation but Tim is clearly an artist who is keen to converse with the viewer. With his painting Poppy Day, Memorial Park Mount Victoria (a finalist in the 2016 Gallipoli Art Prize), Tim takes this to another level by embedding narrative within the actual image. A.N.G Irvings poem, Poppy Day, occupies a large section of the painting. As we read the poem, the image, which at first glance is a pleasant Remembrance Day scene, takes on a sombre mood and we are compelled to review each element of the scene with Irvings words now dominating our thoughts. The poem is deeply moving and makes viewing the image an emotional experience. Poppy Day, the painting and the poem, are both important works. His ability to converse with the viewer through imagery and narrative leaves us wanting to know more about the artist. We gain further insight about Tim through his pastel, Highway Ugrade Wabi Sabi. He once again engages us in conversation and, in describing the artwork, he shares Wabi Sabi is the Japanese philosophy of the beauty of imperfection. The degraded, the rustic, the element of time and its influence on change. I utilise this ethos in my life and art. Highway Upgrade Wabi Sabi has been shortlisted for the 2016 Rick Armor Drawing Prize. With such a diverse collection, About Time promises to stimulate, inspire, amuse and educate. The exhibition will be held in Katoomba at Gallery ONE88 from Tuesday 31st May to Sunday 5th June. You can score an invitation to the opening event by contacting the gallery direct on (02) 4782 1900. For a preview of Tims work, you can visit his website www.timkjones.com.au and his fantastic Facebook page at www.facebook.com/TimKJonesArt. Youll also find some of Tims artwork on OzArt Finder www.ozartfinder.com/artists/tim-k-jones. See more

Over the years, he has won numerous awards for his work. Gordons work has been described as impressionistic and true to the subject. He conducts many workshops and encourages his students capture the feeling and atmosphere of a scene, rather than placing too much emphasis on detail. He believes when this is done, the painting is far more appealing. Gordon welcomes commissioned work which can be done from either a photograph or on site. John Duncan, now retired lives in the South West region of W.A., where he devotes much of his time to painting. In this beautiful location, he feels he has it all with endless inspiration to paint the wonderful landscapes and seascapes that surround him. John is mostly a self-taught artist and his preferred medium is acrylics. He quotes; It is still a self-teaching process, and may it never end! Margaret Morgan Watkins has always been interested in art and feels fortunate that she grew up having several wonderful teachers who helped her expand on her artistic talents. She initially took up oil painting and sought tuition by many well known Australian artists. Today, her preferred mediums are watercolour and acrylics, but she has also explored numerous mediums including, silk painting and encaustic wax. Her constant experimentation in various techniques has made her a very versatile artist in terms of style and subject matter. Margaret is currently a member of the Seymour and Kilmore Art Societies and the Woodend Art Group. She has been particularly active with the Woodend Art Group where she conducts regular workshops in silk painting and acrylic pouring techniques. See more
