23.01.2022 Members of the OzFish Maroochydore Chapter are serious about fish habitat! Their latest development sees the group of keen recfishers aiming to bring back the oyster reefs that once lined their beautiful river. For some they are considered the kidneys of the river and the local anglers know how important they are for water clarity and fish habitat, which is why this week they headed down to the well-established OzFish Shell Recycling Centre at the Port of Brisbane to gathe...r tips and tricks on how to best collect, sterilise, wash and prepare the shells. It's great to see our OzFish chapters and volunteers working together. 23.01.2022 Concrete storm water channels can become living environments, here's an example from just down the road. There's plenty of concrete channels running through Newcastle and into the harbour, imagine the increase in local fish life if they were turned into habitat! Join and come along to a meeting of your local Ozfish group to hear about the projects we've got brewing.

23.01.2022 You might think it's a little crazy but... yes, you can build a fence for fish. Western Landcare NSW, Wentworth Shire Council and OzFish Unlimited Sunraysia came together through funding from NSW DPI Fisheries recreational fishing trust and our partnership with Landcare NSW to do just that. #BetterHabitatBetterFishing #murray #sunraysia #FishHabitatRestoration Recreational Fishing Alliance of NSW... 22.01.2022 FUN FISH FACT - Aussie fish riparian vegetation. Did you know that some fish get 40% of their food from insects that live in plants along the water's edge? Or that these plants help regulate water temperature which is critical for life cycle events of many of our native species? Learn more about impressive riparian vegetation and all the great things it does for waterway and fish productivity in this week's instalment in our unpack habitat series.

20.01.2022 The key factor affecting our fish populations in the Basin is water management. It is important we are as informed as possible to help look after our fish. For more information and to have your say click on the link dpie.nsw.gov.au/nswwaterstrategy

16.01.2022 OzFish support native fish rescue and relocation: Lachlan River 177 native Murray Cod, Golden Perch and Silver Perch are now swimming safely in the waters of Wyangala Dam after an intensive fish rescue operation. Volunteers from Inland Waterways OzFish were urgently called in to assist NSW DPI Fisheries with the relocation effort, enacted under a DPI rescue and relocation permit, after the native fish inadvertently found themselves in a precarious position and in need of a he...lping hand to ensure their survival with summer fast approaching. The operation follows numerous large-scale efforts to rescue native fish from drought affected stretches of rivers in late 2019, where OzFish volunteers assembled specialist fish relocation pods and equipment under the guidance of expert NSW DPI Fisheries staff. Five volunteers from Dubbo’s Inland Waterways OzFish headed out to this latest rescue, where Murray Cod up to around 110cm in length, along with scores of yellowbelly and threatened Silver Perch were saved. It was great to once again work alongside the DPI Fisheries team to get a good outcome for our native fish, Inland Waterways OzFish Chapter president Matt Hansen said. To see the team in the water, high fiving and cheering as those big Murray Cod were cradled to the relocation pods was an incredibly satisfying experience. We estimate that some of the bigger fish were of considerable age, and those fish don’t just grow that big overnight, so to see them saved is a fantastic outcome. Our native fish have been through the drought from hell over the past few years, with shocking large scale fish kills in many parts of the Murray-Darling Basin, so to see another couple of hundred escorted to safer waters is something our OzFish volunteers will never forget. The rescue work is an example of how recreational fishers from OzFish are working to help our native fish. The work across Australia is supported by BCF and its customers with this project made possible because of the experience and skills gained by OzFish volunteers who were part of the 2019/20 Native Fish Drought Response work with NSW DPI Fisheries. To learn more about the project and get involved with OzFish around Australia, go to www.ozfish.org.au or call 1800 431 308.

16.01.2022 With the help of NSW DPI Fisheries, we're educating tomorrow's fishers. Our OzFish Unlimited Tenterfield Chapter held a two-day fishing clinic and native bush tucker incursions for students at The Sir Henry Parkes Memorial Public School this week. Sadly the students camp was canceled due to COVID but OzFish stepped in to help out. Over the two days, Tenterfield President Harry Davey got 92 students up to date with the latest info on fish handling, knots and rigs, casting, sustainable fishing practices, and of course fish habitat. Harry and his partner Mel Bridge also personally donated a native garden to the school which the students planted out over the two days. OzFish will be back next term for some more science lessons on #fishhabitat. #FutureOzFishers right there people.

14.01.2022 Not all is lost for the endangered Macquarie perch in Sydney’s Georges River! Recently, OzFish participated in environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling of the water and found that the endangered species is still present in the system. The Macquarie perch was once one of the most abundant freshwater species, but it has been diminished over recent decades to habitat loss and degradation. This is fantastic news for the fishing community! ... #BetterHabitatBetterFishing #MacquariePerch #GeorgesRiver #FishForTheFuture #HabitatRestoration #OzFishUnlimited Campbelltown City Council, NSW Landcare Australia BCF - Boating, Camping, Fishing National Parks Association of NSW UNSW Dr Mike Freelander MP

12.01.2022 Fishos are some of the most passionate people when it comes to caring for our waterways and that's why we have teamed up with Tangaroa Blue to tackle litter in our Aussie waterways together. Rec fishers see firsthand the impact that litter has on their own fishing experiences, whether that’s in our oceans, estuaries or inland rivers. The launch of our OzFish's involvement today in the ReefClean Look after your Tackle program reinforces the changing perception of recreational fishers in Australia and their motivation to be part of the solution. #ChangingTheStory #BetterBabitatBetterFishing #CleanUp #LookAfterYourTackle #waterways #fishos

10.01.2022 That's a warp, the Seeds for Snapper Seagrass Weekend in Cockburn Sound has finished. With a whopping 300,000 seagrass seeds collected so far and more coming in. The third annual Seeds for Snapper weekend was an incredible success. Some super keen volunteers still out there now collecting more over the next few days to help us get to the 1 million mark... We should get there, there is plenty more seed left. Stay tuned for an update. BUT! None of it would have been possible wi...thout all of our volunteer's hard work and dedication. These guys put in nights building nets, collecting seed, cooking for the hungry volunteers and more. From the bottom of the ocean thank you so much Seeds for Snapper 2020 crew! Without our volunteers, we simply couldn't do this. It was a mammoth community effort and each and every one of you raised your hand to help. So amazing to see and we wanted to say thank you. We hope everyone had as much fun as us and we can't wait to do it all again with you next year. This year there was mermaids, divers, snorkelers, rec fishers, families, kids the young and old - all getting involved in seagrass restoration. Watch this space for updates on the project as the photos and video are coming in to show the world just what happens when we all get involved in habitat restoration to make fishing better for everyone.

08.01.2022 OzFish Unlimited volunteers teamed up with fishers from Galston Glenorie Fishing Club and Windybanks Fishing Club to clean up Cattai Creek. While the fishers pulled predominately large debris and rubbish from their kayaks and boats, they were supported on foot by volunteers and staff from Hawkesburycitynsw, Coles, Tangaroa Blue, Bass Sydney and the Clean Up Australia team who covered a number of kilometres of riverbank pulling up smaller items such as bottles, foam packagi...ng and... over 65 rubber balls! Can you believe that? Overall the haul significantly reduced the volume of debris that would have otherwise flowed downstream in the next wet-weather event. This was just one of four rubbish removal events coordinated in the region to clean up the creeks and estuaries following from the devastation of the March 2021 floods, one of the hardest hit across NSW. Volunteers hope this is just the beginning of restoring Cattai Creek. It's particularly important for our OzFish chapter members and the fishing clubs, as they all know our motto #BetterHabitatBetterFishing BCF - Boating, Camping, Fishing Photo Credit: Coles
