25.01.2022 Executive Director Graham Young in the Spectator on how Australia's security position deteriorates under a Biden-Harris administration. https://www.spectator.com.au//well-need-to-pay-a-higher-d/

25.01.2022 Executive Director Graham Young on what the Queensland local government elections, and two state by-elections, tell us about the next state election. Originally in the Spectator Australia https://onlineopinion.com.au/view.asp?article=20904

25.01.2022 Gigi Foster has been a voice of reason on balancing the costs of COVID. Her excellent submission to the Victorian Parliament can be downloaded from https://parliament.vic.gov.au/paec/inquiries/article/4554 and you can see her discussing these issues less formally in this online seminar.

25.01.2022 Do we need a royal commission or inquiry into our handling of COVID-19? The measures we adopted contradict the pre-existing WHO advice. http://www.internationalaffairs.org.au//foreshadowing-a-c/

25.01.2022 The problem with most accounting for the COVID pandemic is that it takes COVID deaths out of the context of total deaths. Our research indicates that the lockdown will cause more loss of life than the pandemic. This is a long term view. However, the Swedes are publishing daily statistics of total deaths. The graph shows an increase over the COVID period, which is now coming back to normal levels.

23.01.2022 John Mickel and Graham Young sketch out the basics for the Queensland state election 2020 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8iuvuQQv0k

23.01.2022 More state election commentary. This time a webinar organised by the McKell Institute. Hon Rachel Nolan from McKell and Graham Young from AIP. https://us02web.zoom.us//9015924/WN_mHM4hIwRRe-gZrSxXuvfBA

23.01.2022 Australia needs to have a conversation about nuclear. Without it dreams of 100% carbon neutrality are likely to be a nightmare it is difficult, if not impossible, to wake up from https://www.thisismoney.co.uk//Rolls-Royce-triggers-250bn-

22.01.2022 According to our latest research voters will be looking past COVID-19 to see what political parties are offering as their plan for the future. An unusual election where positive policies might count more than usual. https://onlineopinion.com.au/view.asp?article=21131

22.01.2022 Director Dan Ryan on The Spectator. Since when does a doctor get to act like the premier?

22.01.2022 Professor Ramesh Thakur puts the case for a Royal Commission into our reaction to COVID-19 http://www.internationalaffairs.org.au//lockdowns-could-k/

21.01.2022 The Queensland budget is really more of the same, but at a higher cost and no plan to end deficits or pay back debt. https://www.spectator.com.au//annastacia-palaszczuks-arro/

20.01.2022 Executive Director Graham Young in The Spectator. Time to roll up the free market sleeves and join the brawl! https://www.spectator.com.au//want-to-fight-back-against-/

20.01.2022 The costs of COVID-19 lockdowns in third world countries are even more devastating than in the first world. https://www.graphic.com.gh//cost-benefits-of-fighting-covi

20.01.2022 Important statement from REIQ. A mistake to think that tenants are the only people affected by COVID-19. Many landlords will also be at disadvantage. Majority of rental housing owned by small investors.

20.01.2022 More of our analysis on the Queensland election https://www.afr.com//queensland-isn-t-just-a-covid-19-elec We're also polling Queenslanders at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/QLD2020_2.

18.01.2022 In this instalment of AIPs COVID19 Seminar Series, Dr Peter Jonson will be exploring the consequences of the economic recession looming before us and dissecting the many causes of the crisis. Join us online as we discuss historic economic crashes and why the coronavirus recession is different.

17.01.2022 Our research on sitting days and parliaments around Australia got a run in the Courier Mail today. Something about Queensland that it habitually sits less than other states, but the Palaszczuk government appears to be almost allergic to Parliament House, it has been sitting so infrequently. Lack of sittings means lack of transparency and scrutiny, means poor legislation. https://www.couriermail.com.au//5211f6b616cd2dbf50e3b6df8f

17.01.2022 Analyse and discuss: "When people hear Black lives matter, they dont often think of climate change. But the location and nature of climate changes worst effects on human society are geographically delineated by persistent legacies of racism, slavery and colonialism. The climate-change community desperately needs to address historic inequities in access to resources and opportunities as well as socioeconomic and political factors that are the root causes of the climate cri...sis, and we must adopt mitigation and adaptation strategies informed by local and Indigenous knowledge. Climate change cannot be another global crisislike malaria or the many extreme pollution episodesthat is propagated by and solved for fair-skinned folk in the northern hemisphere while communities of color globally continue to suffer as a result of unjust practices and policies that continue to silence our voices." From Nature's "Briefing email" this week. See more

16.01.2022 Join us this Monday for a discussion with Professor Tony Makin and Hon Kate Carnell on the ramifications of Australias economic response to COVID19

15.01.2022 Our latest from The Spectator. We need to account for direct deaths and also indirect deaths to end-up with the optimum policy on COVID-19. If you agree you might be interested in signing the letter. https://aip.asn.au//open-up-our-country-sign-the-open-let/ https://www.spectator.com.au//we-are-killing-more-people-/

15.01.2022 Judith Sloan on public housing. Some interesting facts, but no conclusion. Wed say that public housing is only justified in a few specific cases, such as for some disabled. The best way to provide affordable housing is through the regular housing market - the same way we provide affordable food and clothing through efficient markets. If housing is unaffordable, fix the market, dont compound the problems by providing government housing to a tiny proportion of those who meet the eligibility criteria. https://www.theaustralian.com.au//f64a8e43ea2ac7ab1a9cd21c

15.01.2022 We helped organise an open letter to government calling for a lifting of all restrictions now. It was signed by 30 prominent Australians. You can download the letter here https://aip.asn.au///2020/01/Dear-Prime-Minister_Final.pdf and if you agree with its contents you can add your signature by going here https://aip.asn.au//open-up-our-country-sign-the-open-let/. Signatories include super star economist Paul Frijters, and ABC host Professor Gigi Foster. The argument is that lockdowns cost more life indirectly than they save directly, and that we need better governance mechanisms for the future.

15.01.2022 The dangers of corporatist government. Do we really need another accord ScoMo? https://bit.ly/3egYJiP

15.01.2022 Given the rise in COVID-19 infections in Victoria, and the rise in the hysteria surrounding it, it's time to review our approach to COVID and put in place measures to ensure a rational response next time. If you agree you might read, and even sign, this open letter. https://aip.asn.au//open-up-our-country-sign-the-open-let/

14.01.2022 Time for the Queensland government to provide the details of their COVID-19 economic recovery plan. Which is why the AIP has launched a billboard campaign calling for details to be revealed. So far in this election campaign the only "economic" plan is a series of bribes aimed at voters in various marginal constituencies, backed up by media releases rather than modelling. https://aip.asn.au//queensland-needs-a-proper-plan-for-ec/

13.01.2022 Join us this Monday for a discussion on how nuclear is the only practical solution to our current energy problem.

12.01.2022 Looks like the COVID war is essentially over in Sweden with deaths returning to the normal band for the previous 5 years. Of course now COVID is in the mix when it wasn't previously, but it is outcompeting some of the previous forms of death and substituting for them.

11.01.2022 Our take on the Queensland election. https://www.afr.com//queenslanders-vote-for-safe-pair-of-h

11.01.2022 Total Swedish death rates appear to have returned to average levels again.

11.01.2022 Some excellent analysis on Sweden and COVID. A death rate like a really bad flu season, with an overall infection rate around .06%. https://www.nicholaslewis.org/the-progress-of-the-covid-19/

11.01.2022 Norway has reassessed their strategy and believes that they could have done as well without a lockdown, and also that COVID will be with us for years to come. This is an example of the sort of transparency that our government should be showing.

11.01.2022 Our latest housing affordability index figures are out. Housing more affordable than it has been for 17 years, based on repayments. But potential COVID downside of 26%, based on the highest affordability since the series starts, which was in 1998. https://aip.asn.au//housing-affordability-index-march-2020/

08.01.2022 936 signatures on our petition to open up the country and learn to live with COVID-19 https://aip.asn.au//open-up-our-country-sign-the-open-let/. Also notice that WHO has come to the conclusion we will need to learn to live with the Corona virus https://www.abc.net.au//who-warns-there-may-never/12521004 If you haven't signed already, please think about it.

08.01.2022 Latest total mortality figures from Sweden show them dropping below average in the early days of June. Interestingly, while this year so far has been the worst for mortality of the last 6, it is only 3.46% greater than 2015, and 3.67% greater than 2018.

07.01.2022 Queensland government set to change tenancy laws and rob landlords to curry favour with tenants under the cover of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is unnecessary, unjust and inequitable. Is it another "retirement tax"? https://aip.asn.au//queensland-governments-new-secret-ten/

06.01.2022 In this installment of AIPs COVID19 Seminar Series, Dr Paul Frijters will be dissecting the dire consequences of the governments reponse to COVID19. Join us online as we breakdown the various causes, consequences, and cures of the COVID19 pandemic.

06.01.2022 Paper published today on Cross River Rail project. Surprising fact - it involves a privatisation from a government which says it doesn't believe in privatisation. Second surprising fact - there might be more to come as some of the assets have been shifted to QIC, which has previously been a conduit for surreptitiously privatising Queensland Motorways. Not spurprised that they over-estimated passenger numbers by maybe 50%. https://aip.asn.au//cross-river-rail-privatisations-cost-/

06.01.2022 Why models dont (and cant) foretell the future. https://www.aier.org//the-modelers-thought-of-everything-/

05.01.2022 Thanks to the McKell Institute for organising this discussion of the next Queensland election between Rachel Nolan and Graham Young. Thanks also to Ryan Batchelor for great moderation. https://youtu.be/3RBfFALpdnc

05.01.2022 Just like measles, the cold and flu, we will just need to live with this virus. WHO has not always been right, but it is probably right about this, and it underlines the fact that there is no risk free way to open-up, or to stay opened-up. https://twitter.com/AFP/status/1260649261219209216

04.01.2022 Tune in at 3:3o pm. Look forward to your questions.

04.01.2022 Our response to the state government shifting the care for renters experiencing difficulties from themselves to real estate investors, many of whom might be less solvent than their tenants. They can find $200 million to bail out a foriegn airline like Virgin, but they throw local investors under the bus. https://aip.asn.au//queensland-parliament-to-investors-wh/

03.01.2022 We need a national summit to look at how a calculation error in a pandemic model could turn into misery for millions and cost billions of dollars. https://aip.asn.au//calculation-error-in-covid-19-modelli/

03.01.2022 The data on Sweden shows the folly of measuring the severity of COVID-19 by new cases. The Swedish death rate has barely budged. This appears to be what herd immunity looks like

03.01.2022 Join the conversation with your comments and questions LIVE as we discuss the important issues: Labor/Greens and pedophilia, moving the Covid19 goalposts, rebui...lding the economy, cyber attack on Australia, getting partisan propaganda out of schools & YOUR live comments. 02.01.2022 Great article by Stephen Kirchner, and entirely in line with our suggestion that first home buyers ought to be able to access their super to get into the housing market.https://stephenkirchner.substack.com/p/the-moral-panic-over

02.01.2022 Weve been following Sweden during the Coronavirus outbreak for the simple reason that it is one of the few countries that has stuck to the original "flatten the curve" strategy, which was not to try to eliminate the disease, but to ensure it didnt overwhelm the health system. But Sweden is not the only state where this strategy has been prosecuted. In the USA Arkansas, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Wyoming did a Sweden as well. This think tank provides data where you can look at their performance and try to empirically assess the success of that strategy. https://www.kff.org//coll/covid-19-and-related-state-data/

01.01.2022 Tim Poole provides some interesting statistics on Facebook in the US and what news organisations generate the most traffic. https://youtu.be/te_wmHxdNE0 The Australian reports that Facebook is threatening to take all Australian news off its platform. Could be it doesn't really have a lot of value to them.
