24.01.2022 Australia's Tourism Minister Simon Birmingham is cautiously talking up international travel again, but the basic message remains the same - overseas travel for Australians just may be possible in the first half of 2021 - a proposition the Minister describes as "challenging" - but is more likely in the second half of the year. And the one significant proviso remains the same - it all depends on the effectiveness of a COVID-19 vaccine. Visa info: [email protected] could be able to book an overseas trip within months with coronavirus vaccines set to arrive in January. Tourism minister Simon Birmingham anticipated that international travel would resume in 2021, but will hinge upon the effectiveness of the vaccine. Senator Birmingham said overseas travel in the first six months of the year 'may be challenging' but there was a good chance of a resumption in the latter half. 'The manufacturing rollout, distribution, uptake, all the other factors that come into how it is that a vaccine could change the way we look at things around this pandemic,' he told Sky News' Sunday Agenda program.Tourism minister Simon Birmingham

24.01.2022 NSW is currently closed to applications for visa nominations under the NSW Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190) program and Skilled Work Regional visa (subclass 491). It will only open to new nominations once the Commonwealth Govt provides an allocation of positions for 2020-21. Currently, it is not known when this will occur.

23.01.2022 Australias new PR visa scheme being developed for Hong Kongers would see nearly 10.000 HK visa holders already in Australia have their visas extended by 5 years. After that, they would become eligible for permanent residency. Hong Kongers with an Aussie visa but outside Australia would also be eligible for the visa extension by 5 years and ultimate PR. Aussie visa holders from HK who are currently in Australia comprise 8,200 students, 570 temporary skilled and 900 graduate visa holders.

23.01.2022 Victorian visa nominations information for 2020/21 has been updated. The latest advice from Victorian Immigration is that Home Affairs has provided a limited number of visa nomination places for Victoria up until the Federal Budget is delivered on 6 October 2020. Consequently, Victorian Immigration is preparing to re-open visa nominations. It will have new policies and nomination criteria to support Victorias economic recovery and the public health response. The Victorian department suggests that intending nomination applications prepare their Expression of Interest (EOI).to be ready once more information becomes available.

23.01.2022 Temporary migrant workers in Australia are often wage theft victims. Wage theft in Australia is especially evident among temporary migrant workers, according to the recent Wage Theft in Australia report. This says that temporary migrant workers comprise up to 11% of the Australian labour market. It says that a substantial proportion of international students, backpackers and other temporary migrant workers are paid half the legal minimum wage.

23.01.2022 The number of Australians able to return from overseas has increased by 290 per week to 6,290 after Qld agreed to take another 150 and WA an extra 140 weekly. The total will soon rise further with SA taking an additional 100 arrivals every 14-16 days and the ACT taking 150 returning Australians every 16-18 days. Visa info: [email protected]

21.01.2022 The National Farmers’ Federation wants the Government to bring the Working Holiday Maker visa program back into operation to provide workers for the horticultural and agricultural industries which need 26,000 extra workers to harvest this season's crops. The peak picking period runs from September to February with greatest demand in eastern Australia. Visa info: [email protected]

21.01.2022 Will 2021 be a better year to get an Australian visa than 2020? Almost certainly not - at least for the first six months of the calendar year. The effects of COVID-19 will continue to overhang the Australian migration scene coupled with the Government and Opposition both committed to cutting the annual migrant intake. While there will be few good news stories for intending migrants, visa holders already in Australia and wanting PR could benefit from the situation because there is no competition from overseas applicants due to Australia's travel bans. 21.01.2022 There has been a surge in student visa applications from Hong Kong citizens in Australia as China introduced its new security law clampdown in the territory. In the first six months of 2020 the number of student visa applications from Hongkongers in Australia rose by 39% compared with the same period on 2019. Anecdotal evidence suggests that in the same period this year student visa applications from Hong Kong citizens outside Australia showed a strong rise.

20.01.2022 Good news for for international students with the creation of an additional Temporary Graduate Visa to allow an additional one or two years of post-study work in Australia. 20.01.2022 A pilot program to bring back international students to Australia is scheduled to run next month with 300 final year students from South East Asia flying from Singapore to Adelaide in early September as a test for similar future programs. The arriving students will be subject to strict quarantine. Current SA arrangements call for 14 days supervised quarantine costing $3,000 per person with the fee paid by the students or their unis. Students in the pilot program are expected to come from a number of areas including China, Hong Kong and Japan. SA has almost 7,000 international students stranded offshore. According the Australian Bureau of Statistics, fewer than 60 international students arrived in Australia in June compared to the 46,000 who entered the country on student visas during the same period last year,

20.01.2022 Those on temporary visas which are near expiry and prevented by COVID-19 from returning home should apply for another visa to remain legal. One option may be a 408 Temporary Activity visa which currently allows a person to remain in Australia if they have no other visa options and cannot depart Australia due to travel restrictions. It also applies for visa holders to continue working in critical sectors including agriculture, food processing, health care, aged care, disability care and childcare during the COVID-19 pandemic. 20.01.2022 Current reports put the number of Australians trying to return to the country at 29,000. However, depending on their location the high flight costs can be a deterrent. Also, the present cap of 6,000 overseas arrivals per week into Australia is also making it difficult for many of those who wish to return now to do so.

20.01.2022 Skilled work migration visas accounted for 70% of the 2019/20 migrant intake with Employer Sponsored (29,261 visas) and State/Territory Nominated (21,495) being the two largest visa categories. The third largest was Skilled Work Regional (15,000) with Skilled Independent (12,986) being the fourth. 20.01.2022 The Government has approved two pilot programs to re-start the flow of overseas students to Australia. Flinders University will be able to bring 300 international students into Adelaide in November and the Northern Territory's Charles Darwin uni will bring 70 students into Darwin expected by the end of October. This will be the first overseas student groups entering Australia for tertiary courses since hard border restrictions were applied in March. 20.01.2022 If you were granted a Working Holiday Maker 417 or 462 visa, but could not take it up because of COVID travel restrictions or you had to depart Australia early due to the pandemic and are unable to apply for a new WHM as you are now past the age limit then you could get a waiver for a future visa application charge or a refund. Just make sure you apply for the new visa or refund before end of 2022. Fortunately, there is no maximum time you must have spent in Australia before departure. Visa info: [email protected]

18.01.2022 You can now apply for an Australia Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) via mobile app. You need the mobile app (Australian ETA) and a passport from one of these countries - Brunei, Canada, Hong Kong (SAR of China), Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea or the United States of America. This re-start of issuing ETA visas follows their cessation earlier this year due to COVID-19. But after an ETA grant a person currently needs to apply for a travel exemption with supporting evidence. The ETA application cost is $20. Visa info: [email protected]

16.01.2022 The COVID-19 hit to visa applications from overseas students is clearly shown in the 33.5% fall in the 2019/2020 number compared to the previous financial year. Most of that drop occurred in the June quarter. The country showing the biggest decline was India where the 2019/2020 number of visa applications fell by more than 28,000 which is nearly half compared to number for the previous financial year.

15.01.2022 The Australian government is copping flack for its imposition of $66,000 fines and 5 years jail for Australians who enter the country within 14 days of being in India. Many critics say the measure is too harsh, but the Government is standing by its decision saying that it is in place only till 15 May.

15.01.2022 The West Australian newspaper reported that Filipino crews are banned from iron ore carriers servicing the Pilbara because some crew members from the Philippines have tested positive to COVID-19. Seems a bit of a racist response as if the Philippines is the worst place in the world for COVID-19 - because it is not. Surely it would be more reasonable to ban infected crew members irrespective of their nationality.

15.01.2022 Applicants needing an Australian Police Clearance certificate during COVIF-19 can have a problem supplying the 100 points of ID. Consequently, to assist applicants during the pandemic the Australian Federal Police are accepting an applicants visa grant as 70 points of ID evidence. All visa advice - [email protected]

13.01.2022 Australias temporary work visa holders are being hard bit by COVID-19s impacts on business with many losing their jobs, not being able to find another sponsor and not being eligible for Government assistance. Temporary visa holders are excluded from the governments JobSeeker and JobKeeper support. The government has confirmed that eligibility rules for COVID-19 assistance programs will not change and as a consequence an estimated 1.1 million temporary visa holders will still not be able to access support.

13.01.2022 Planning to apply for a Partner Visa? Then dont delay. Thats because the queue of Partner Visa applications in the Dept of Home Affairs just keeps getting longer. Currently, the backlog for applications awaiting assessment has blown out to about 92,000. That is nearly 20,000 more than five years ago when there was a queue of 74.000 awaiting assessment. And theres nothing to suggest that this will change for the better any time soon. Advice on Partner Visas and Partner Sponsorships - [email protected] or txt 0408955770.

This means when borders re-open, students will already have visas and be able to travel to Australia. International students will be able to lodge a further student visa application free of charge, if they are unable to complete their studies within their original visa validity due to COVID-19. Current student visa holders studying online outside Australia due to COVID-...19 will be able to use that study to count towards the Australian study requirement for a post-study work visa. Graduates who held a student visa will be eligible to apply for a post-study work visa outside Australia if they are unable to return due to COVID-19. Additional time will be given for applicants to provide English language results where COVID-19 has disrupted access to these services. See more

12.01.2022 Increasing concern over filling specialist jobs, especially in healthcare, has resulted in creation of a new visa occupation list - the Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List (PMSOL). It comprises 17 occupations with 11 being medical. Acting Immigration Minister Alan Tudge said this stemmed from the need for key health workers to help fight the virus and skilled migrants who would be job multipliers to help the economy recover. Overseas workers granted these visas would get travel exemptions.

11.01.2022 Todays economic update for Australia from the Treasurer should finally give some indication of the way forward for the countrys stalled migration program. Since the onset and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, together with the shutdown of international travel, Australias migration process has been in freefall. But today there may finally be some clarity - even if negative.

11.01.2022 Charles Darwin University and the NT and Australian governments are discussing a pilot program to bring 70 international students from Singapore to Darwin this month. Under the proposal, the students from China, Malaysia and Singapore, will be quarantined at a Howard Springs, Darwin, facility. The university has 2,500 overseas students.

11.01.2022 The South Australian Government has been accused of double standards in its treatment of overseas student visa holders compared to western Victorian students who attend classes across the border in SA. While SA prepares to bring in 300 student visa holders from SE Asia next month, it has now stopped cross-border exemptions for students in far west Victoria to attend their courses in SA. 11.01.2022 Plans by the ANU and Canberra University to bring 350 overseas students into the ACT have been shelved indefinitely. The unis say the postponement is due to a clearer picture of the evolving COVID-19 situation being needed. The two unis had put the proposal to government to bring 340 students into the ACT in July, but the surge of the infection in Victoria and the national ramifications have obviously put paid to any return of international students in the near future.

10.01.2022 Australia will not be taking international students for the foreseeable future with Prime Minister Scott Morrison saying that this was due to alternatives to hotel quarantine such as in-home, on-farm or on-campus quarantine not being safe. The continued restriction is a blow to Australia’s struggling university sector. This means an Australians first approach to people entering the country with a cap of 6,000 arrivals a week.

10.01.2022 Victoria re-opens its nomination program for Skilled Nominated 190 and Skilled Regional Sponsored 491 visas on 8 September. Also, it is changing its selection method choosing only applicants whose registration of interest demonstrates they work in health or medical research and contribute to Victorias economic recovery and/or health response. This version of the program until 5 October 2020.

10.01.2022 Some small in-person citizenship ceremonies have been re-introduced following limited easing of COVID-19 restrictions. These restrictions originally forced such ceremonies on-line. However, in-person conferrals must comply with current state/territory limits on permissible numbers and must meet COVIDSafe requirements. Individuals are contacted directly and invited to attend either an online or a small in-person citizenship ceremony.

10.01.2022 While the Australian govt expects to issue 160,000 permanent visas this financial year, it is clear that with COVID-19 shutting down international travel and an overseas arrivals cap, the majority of those visas will go to temporary visa holders already in Australia. So, the PR winners in 2020/21 will certainly be individuals now in the country on temporary visas.

10.01.2022 The South Australian Skilled and Business Migration programs are scheduled to re-open when the Commonwealth Government finalises its allocation of state nomination places for the 2020/21 program year. They would be counted under a separate arrival cap and would not take away spaces from returning Australian citizens and other international arrivals.

09.01.2022 International students are a temporary visa holder group most harshly affected by COVID-19. An Australian study of more than 5,000 such visa holders has illustrated the pandemics savage impact with 65% losing their jobs, 43% having to skip meals regularly, 39% struggling to cover living expenses, 34% having been evicted or facing eviction and 23% sharing a bedroom to cut costs. Some 67% of the respondents were international students.

09.01.2022 Students transitioning to the skilled graduate 485 visa will be able to provide evidence of English proficiency after lodging their application. This recognises that due to COVID-19 it may be near impossible for some students to sit the necessary English language test at this time. This will allow many students visa holders to extend their stay and transition to the 485 visa.

09.01.2022 Australian states and territories are gradually reopening skilled visa nomination and business programs for 2020-21 after months of suspension due to the COVID-19. NSW, SA, ACT and Victoria will soon open for limited visa nominations for small, restricted lists of occupations related to recovery from the pandemic. For all visa info - [email protected]

08.01.2022 International students will be able to lodge an additional student visa application at no cost if the COVID-19 pandemic prevented them completing their studies on their original student visa. 08.01.2022 The number of international arrivals into Sydney, Brisbane and Perth.has been cut by 50 per cent for the next five weeks due to concerns about the new COVID-19 strain reported to be some 70 per cent more transmissible than previous strains. Current or future students will be able to stay for 5 years once theyve graduated and then have a path to PR. HK temporary graduate or skilled visa holders will have their visas extended by 5 years in addition to the time theyve already been in Australia with an ultimate PR pathway. Australia will also provide a 5-year visa with a pathway to PR for future Hong Kong applicants for temporary skilled visas.

07.01.2022 COVID-19 has sped up the Australian citizenship ceremony process since forcing it online earlier this year. The result is that a ceremony waiting list which had stood at 100,000 at the beginning of 2020 is now down to 30,000. Since April when citizenship ceremonies went online, 90,000 have participated in video conference ceremonies which is a rate of 400 people each day. All visa and citizenship info: [email protected]

07.01.2022 Being a NSW resident is a critical current requirement for skilled migration invitations in that state. NSW will continue to prioritise applicants with skills which support the state’s economic recovery and the area of public health response. But applicants are only sought in selected health, ICT and engineering occupations - and who are residing in NSW. All visa info - [email protected]

06.01.2022 The Australian Government says that the return of overseas students can only occur if strict quarantine conditions are met. In doing this it would work with education institutions to see how this might be achieved. The other aspect which had to be addressed was how the consequent student quarantine costs would be met.

06.01.2022 The Tasmanian government will re-open its Nominated Skilled Migration Program to general applications on 29 January at 1pm (AEDT). The State now has its full places quota for the remainder of the 2020-21 year in which there are on offer some 1400 places for subclass 491 visas, 1000 places for subclass 190 visas and 45 places for Business Migration. 06.01.2022 Need a Bridging Visa B? Forget it! If you are thinking of departing Australia on a BVB, then bad luck. Home Affairs is advising that no Bridging Visa Bs for travel are being granted. It says this is due to COVID-19 and global travel bans. That means a person can depart on their current Bridging Visa A but has to apply for a new visa to return to Australia. Thats without considering travel restrictions and quarantine.

06.01.2022 Todays economic update squashes any recovery of migration figures by stating that future migration levels remain highly uncertain, due to the path of the pandemic and the measures to contain it. Net migration is assumed to fall right down to just 31,000 in 2020-21, a huge drop from the 232,000 in 2018-19 and 154,000 in 2019-20. Between July and December 2020, only citizens, permanent residents, New Zealanders and a small number of international students are assumed to be a...ble to travel to Australia, based on current policy. From 1 January to 30 June 2021, it is assumed that the travel ban is lifted, but with two-week quarantine required for arrivals, while this would lead to a resumption of arrivals by temporary and permanent migrants that would be at much lower levels than normal. And international travel is assumed to remain at low levels till the end of the June quarter 2021. See more

06.01.2022 The Australian Govt has set up a taskforce to attract exceptional migration talent in the key sectors of advanced manufacturing, financial services (including FinTech) and health. This group would combine experts from the Commonwealth, States and Territories and the private sector as part of the Govts JobMaker plan. Acting Immigration Minister Alan Tudge said COVID-19 had significantly changed the global context and many talented people would now look to places like Australia. He said that ...given our relative success economically, from a health perspective, and socially, we will be even more attractive. He said the Govt wanted to capitalise on this and be very focussed on attracting global super talent to Australia to aid post-pandemic recovery and boost jobs.

06.01.2022 Victoria is taking steps to try to re-start its international education sector with reports that it is preparing a submission for consideration by the national cabinet on how overseas students can enter the country and re-commence their courses in that State. The Victorian international education sector reportedly will cop an $8bn loss if international students do not return in 2021's first semester. Australia's 40,000 citizens and PR's stranded overseas and unable to get home consider this the ultimate snub, especially after seeing international tennis players and associates welcomed by the planeload for the Australian Open. 05.01.2022 Resumption of the Seasonal Worker Programme (SWP) and Pacific Labour Scheme (PLS) will enable Australias farmers and regional businesses to again recruit seasonal workers from the Pacific and Timor-Leste. This will help fill rural and regional labour shortages when local workers are not available. COVID-19 travel restrictions paused the arrival of new workers under these programs in March. The programs support food production so that farm produce does not go to waste and helps ensure the agricultural sector continues to play a key role in Australias economic recovery. Stringent health conditions will apply and workers will have to comply with required quarantine periods.

The criteria for this visa have recently been broadened as to what are considered critical skills sectors.

05.01.2022 The travel ban on Australians leaving the country has been extended to 24 October and is leaving many citizens and permanent residents increasingly frustrated at not being able to travel. Australia is virtually the only country which is applying such a ban. Exemptions are only granted in exceptional circumstances with there only being several grounds on which applications can be made. The grounds for exemption are so tightly applied that 75% of applications are refused. Many popular destinations for Australian travellers such as European countries are open to travellers which adds to the frustrations of Australians wishing to travel overseas.

04.01.2022 From late next year partner visa applicants and their sponsors (if they are permanent residents rather than Australian citizens) will need "functional-level English", that is overall 4.5 on the IELTS English test or completion of 500 hours of Adult Migration English Program English classes or demonstrate that they have made "reasonable efforts to learn English". But the English proof is not required when the application is lodged but only before the visa decision at the end of the processing the second permanent stage of the visa which is 2 years after initial lodgement.

Now they will be able to apply for the 408 COVID-19 Visa up to 90 days before their existing visa expires and then remain in Australia for up to 12 additional months. This adds tourism and hospitality to the critical sectors of agriculture, food processing, health care, aged care, disability care and child care for eligibility for this visa subclass. 04.01.2022 Theres growing criticism of the increasing size of Australias partner visa backlog. Its estimated that the queue of applications awaiting assessment and approval has reached the all-time record level of more than 100,000. Offshore partner visa applicants now have to wait about two years for approval to live with their partners in Australia. The annual number of partner visas granted annually fell from 48,000 in 2017/18 to 40,000 where it currently remains. Critics claim the Government has applied the administrative brakes to processing in order to limit the number of approvals. Partner visa queries - [email protected]

02.01.2022 Its increasingly difficult for Australians to return from overseas with the daily number of arrivals into Sydney now being limited to 350 per day, down from previously low number of 450. The NSW and Federal governments have made the decision under tighter COVID-19 restrictions to ensure that returning travellers dont overwhelm the capacity of the NSW health and hotel quarantine system.

01.01.2022 The number of family stream visas will be boosted under changed Australian migration program quotas. While the overall migration program remains at 160,000 the family stream proportion will increase from 47,732 to 77,300 places. Also, onshore and regional area partner visa applicants get priority to encourage regional migration. All visa info - [email protected] Tlevel would remain at 160,000 for the 2020-21 program year. Whilst the quota remained the same, the distribution of the quota will change. o ensure that Australia recruits talented individuals to help with the economic recovery,

01.01.2022 More than 87,600 travel exemption requests to enter the country were received from when Australia closed its border against COVID-19 until 31 July.
