22.01.2022 Everything dies, so a what a beautiful way to go! Recently spotted at Lake Alexander, this is a Corypha Utan, also known as a Cabbage palm. They live up to... 50 years old, and right before they die they will terminally bloom. The word for plants that bloom once before they die is monocarpic. When in its first and final bloom, the tree will send up a huge terminal inflorescence which can see up to a million yellow or cream flowers. The flowers are then followed by seeds and once the seeds fall, the trees life is over. The trees will be in bloom for around a month, so get on down to East Point to check them out! Youll be able to spot their bright bloom from a mile away Outside of northern Australia, these palms are found all throughout Timor and East Indonesia.
