24.01.2022 Our Workshop Technicians are open to any challenge! Check out the amazing work our Brisbane technician Tanya Campbell has performed for specific requests from customers. Bassoon key - This customer wanted to add a low C trill plate to their bassoon. Using a sheet of nickel silver and an artistic eye ,the touch piece was created and soldered to the original Low C key. By using Nickel silver this key can be polished up to match the original silver plated keys around it. There i...s also an option for a removable version. Contra Bassoon Keys - These keys had many years of use and due to acids from the fingers and just general wear and use, these keys had begun to pit and deteriorate. It can be quite uncomfortable under the fingers so the touch pieces were filed back smooth and polished up for comfort. Sax keys - These sax key modifications were created to assist in a more comfortable and natural hand position for a player with a different hand set up. A little bit of imagination was required to find something that could be easily transferred onto other instruments as the player upgraded over their musical journey. Custom rollers - It is a well known fact that custom roller set makes you play perfectly in tune, gives you amazing technique and makes every reed the best you have ever had. Well, perhaps not, but at least you can match your instrument to your shoes. If you have any custom requests, no matter how big or small, never hesitate to ask what our instrument magicians can do for you!

24.01.2022 This bugle came into our Ozwinds workshop to be cleaned and polished, it was covered in verdigris (Green corrosion) and heavily tarnished. Purchased at an Auction house, it looked like the real deal to the buyer, sadly it is not. Stamped A.I.F. BATTLE HONOURS 19141918 GALLIPOLI MIDDLE EAST WESTERN FRONT above a Rising Sun badge. There are more replicas in the world than real ones.... If you want to know what to look for, regarding spotting a replica, this web site is one of the go to places. https://www.awm.gov.au/encyclopedia/bugles

23.01.2022 Those who frequent guitar stores will know all about the near-constant sound of a certain Led Zep song coming from all manner of budding guitar gods. Were not immune to such things here at Ozwinds, but our #1 most-played is a little different...

23.01.2022 This beautifully preserved Scientific American article about band instrument repair (dated April 2, 1921) is displayed at our repair booking desk in Moorabbin. Its amazing to see that so many of the repair tools and techniques, such as swedging, burnishing, and pad seating, are all very similar or identical to those we use today. Whilst we invest in and work with plenty of state-of-the-art technology, old fashioned hand craftsmanship is still an integral part of the service our workshop offers. Check out Ozwinds Brass and Woodwind Workshop for more interesting repair stuff.

23.01.2022 Today we got to check out a lovely tenor sax that you certainly dont see every day in Aus! Nick Hill brought in his lovely new "2 Voices" tenor sax - silver and bronze, with brass keywork. How special is that engraving! Rampone & Cazzani Handmade Italian Saxophones

22.01.2022 The newest addition to our "hefty instrument" department, alongside the bass saxophone and the recording bell tuba! This second hand Jupiter sousaphone is now available at our Moorabbin store, and offers great value on a hard-to-find marching band and trad jazz horn. Its got a fibreglass body and bell for lighter weight, although its still got some serious chonk factor. https://www.ozwinds.com.au/product_info.php

21.01.2022 Reminder! This Friday!

21.01.2022 How cute is this?! This piccolo trombone came for a visit to our Moorabbin store this morning! From Wessex in the UK, theyre in the pitch of Bb and sound just like a piccolo trumpet.... but more fun! #slidingaround #piccolotrumpet

20.01.2022 A challenging repair but one that I enjoyed working on. This is a Conn 88H trombone. Considered one of the best vintage professional trombones in the scene... m...et an unfortunate accident inside its gigbag. There were some very tightly folded sections of the bell that required careful work to slowly open them up. It's a bit like reverse origami. One area was quite badly folded and was almost folded in on itself. I don't generally anneal brass while doing dent repairs but from my experience this seemed like the best course of action on this area as it was quite nasty. Of course the lacquer is going to burn when we anneal this section. But better than a tear in the brass. We stripped the remains of the lacquer so it is now just raw brass and this is the end result. I don't remove material with sandpaper or aggressive polishing as it's against my ethos to preserve instruments so while there's some minor scarring and marks it's better than thinning the metal as that's irreversible. I aptly label the remaining marks as 'character' . #ozwindsworkshop #brassrepair #trombonerepair

20.01.2022 Much confusion ensued in the Moorabbin store yesterday, when our beloved John Denver record sounded quite different to normal! Turns out wed been struck by the old switcheroo. A problem you dont really encounter in the age of Spotify and digital music libraries. Weve been exploring all kinds of music in store of late - an eclectic mix of big band, orchestral, jazz, funk, singer songwriter, and more. Let us know in the comments, what music would you put on if you were DJ at an Ozwinds store?

18.01.2022 Talk about Band On The Run! Keeping up practise can be tough when your partner works from home full time and your house lacks any sound proofed practise spaces. Aidan decided to get creative, roll back the front passenger seat, and create a private & insulated practise space with its very own stereo & cup holders! Just got to remember to let plenty of fresh air in. Let us know how you keep up practise without driving your family/neighbours crazy!

18.01.2022 Ozwinds is always committed to developing resources for musicians and educators, especially during these trying times. As a result Ozwinds is proud to recommend resources like Yamaha Australias Great Start to Yamaha page: https://au.yamaha.com/en/support/greatstart/index.html... These resources are designed to help support continued development as musicians, maintaining the relationship between educators and students, as well as connecting the broader community whilst a lot of our community have been stuck in isolation. There are some awesome articles and videos in there including how to stay motivated in-between performances, setting smart practice goals, and multiple inspirational and informative practice articles from some of our Yamaha Artists. See a short clip below of just some of the resources on hand. https://www.youtube.com/watch

17.01.2022 Heres some more very impressive instrument buttons - check out the abalone key touches on this remarkable Austrian-built Schagerl "Gansch Horn" trumpet. 16.01.2022 199 years combined of saxophone history, in one tiny photo! Right now at our Moorabbin store weve got not one but TWO American-made Conn curved soprano saxes, one from 1920 and the other from 1921. Theyre both in awesome condition, and are great fun to play!

16.01.2022 Well it's with heavy heart that we wish our woodwind repair extraordinaire Ashley Jackman farewell and best wishes as he finishes up for his last day at Ozwinds... Workshop in Moorabbin. Celebrating almost 7 years here at our workshop, Ash has been known in the music community for 14 years for his skills in the repair industry and has thoroughly enjoyed his association in Melbourne's music scene. But for those who know Ash he is a country boy at heart and this unprecedented year has put forward his choice to be closer to home, and to be closer to his family and son. Since we were unsuccessful convincing him that a 5 hour one-way commute from Nhill every morning is fun, his choice to leave Ozwinds is probably justified. We have had many great memories in the workshop, lots of laughs and stories. When Ash started with us we had a 20m2 room between us and every horizontal space was filled. Now at the end we have over 200m2 and yet every bench is still filled. To his credit, he actually is a fairly organised worker. But we will miss his wittiness, his problem solving abilities, the great relationships he had with his clients and his attitude of always wanting to produce the best quality work possible. Good luck for the future, and I'm sure we will see you from time to time in store when you do come to Melbourne.

15.01.2022 Ozwinds Coburg will be closed Wednesday 3rd June and our Moorabbin store will be closed Thursday 4th June for our annual stock take. Stay tuned for our stock take sale coming soon.

13.01.2022 Because we love little horns and big ones too, here are some horns not to be played but just listen through. Three giant trumpet-shaped listening devices, crafted from fiberglass, each device highlights a particular natural sound of nature.

12.01.2022 We check every brand new instrument before we sell them. Here is a brand NEW wooden clarinet leaking from a tone hole insert. If we did not test this, it would have gone to a player who would have struggled for a very long time. It is sad to see things like this escaping the manufacturers quality control. All fixed now, it is now sealing like a bottle.

12.01.2022 If you've purchased a secondhand instrument either online or from another store, we're offering a deep-clean on all secondhand brass, woodwind and string instruments, so you can enjoy your new (used) instrument without the nasties! If you'd like to know more feel free to give us a call below or inquire on Facebook Furthermore, while our stores are now open we're still offering Click & Collect for those who prefer! We've also had a few questions about our hygiene procedures,... so we'd like to highlight some key areas below: All instruments/mouthpieces which are trialed by customers are cleaned and sterilised thoroughly, and then undergo a mandatory quarantine period until they are considered safe to be used. This period is currently 5 days. Furthermore, we request that customers who use mouthpieces perform the first initial clean themselves, which we then clean/sterilise ourselves again. Melbourne (Moorabbin) - (03) 9578 3677 Melbourne (Coburg) - (03) 9384 2727 Brisbane - (07) 3118 0166 Gold Coast - (07) 5561 1773

11.01.2022 Due to the re-implementation of Stage 3 restrictions and the rise in impulse buying in Victoria, our Melbourne stores are limiting purchases of saxophones to three per person

11.01.2022 Play it, dont spray it! Here is a new product coming to Oz very soon by Protec These sold out very quickly in USA Double-layer fabric protection Helps slow the spread of germs... 11.01.2022 If youre spending more time than normal at home playing your instrument, its more important than ever that your instrument is getting a good clean after youve played! Ideally using a pull through swab, cleaning brushes, or maybe even a trumpet snake... Probably not this kind though! Check out our range of instrument cleaning products: https://www.ozwinds.com.au/accessories-cleaners-swabs-c-69_

10.01.2022 Despite the new mask restrictions in Vic, our stores have still got your brass and woodwind needs totally "covered" - even our beloved instruments are leading by example! Caption this photo for the chance to win a rockin retro lunchbox. Glenn at our Coburg store says "When out and about, think 1. Mask, then 2. Bach!"

10.01.2022 In light of metro Melbourne moving to Stage 4 restrictions, there have been substantial changes made to both our and stores. Our and stores remain open and trading as they have been. Our Melbourne stores will be closed to the public, so no more testing of instruments or accessories, but they will remain open for phone orders, and contactless Click-and-Collect for customers who live within 5km. In wake of this, we... highly recommend Victorian customers consider using our website for online orders, and take advantage of our DISCOUNTED flat rate shipping on most items. We will still offer 7 day approval on mouthpiece and instrument purchases, with strict sanitising and quarantining of any returns. Most importantly, we highly encourage all our customers to get in contact with us, whether its by phone, Facebook, Email or Instagram. Well be here to answer any queries and concerns you may have, so please get in contact for all your music needs https://www.ozwinds.com.au/ Melbourne Moorabbin (03) 9578 3677 Melbourne Coburg (03) 9384 2727 Brisbane (07) 3118 0166 Gold Coast (07) 5661 1773

02.01.2022 Our #1 contender for "Interesting Instrument Of The Week" - have a look at this French-made Courtois Evolution III trumpet! It features a unique bell-over-bell design, adding plenty of mass and resonance at the business end of the horn, as well as heavy valve caps, heavy buttons, and a unique matte enamel finish to complete the very industrial look. Could this overtake Drederick Tatum to become the next heavyweight champion of the world? Pop in to our Moorabbin store and give it a blast to find out... https://www.ozwinds.com.au/courtois-evolution-doublebell-he
