24.01.2022 The first trikes tested for 2020! Took a lot longer to get there than I’d hoped, but unfortunately COVID made it a touch difficult. Full review coming soon.

23.01.2022 2011 RACV EB- Saturday

23.01.2022 A bit of trivia for a saturday morning. Is anyone able to tell me some things about this photo. a) where is the photo taken b) what is the year and vehicle c) what was significant about that day?... This one will test the memory bank of the older brigade.

23.01.2022 Well, today would have been the first day of the 30th running of the energy breakthrough. unfortunately it’s not to be this year, so I’ll post a heap more photos over the next 5 days to keep the memories going

22.01.2022 A bit of a break today from the pedal prix series. Tonight we look at some trikes from Wonthaggi Secondary college. Over the years, wonthaggi have built some incredible machines and have really been at the forefront of innovation. During the late 90s, they were super fast! With some front wheel drive and 4 wheel vehicles over the years, they certainly did try everything!

22.01.2022 I mentioned earlier that Highview college had some older vehicles called "Flying Scotsman". here are some photos of those trikes in the mid to late 90's.

21.01.2022 2014 AIPP. The 2014 edition promised to be one of the fastest yet, With new powerhouse Platt racing dominating the series so far and Tru Blu lining up for its final ever race. Trisled had a brand new series of aquila racing trike and wattle racing had built a new fairing and chassis. The weather was hot and so was the pace! tru blu and Platt racing both disappeared off into the distance and were never headed. The battle for 3rd place however, was absolutely on.... Trisled and wattle were locked together and battled right down to the last moments, with trisled eventually claiming 3rd spot by 1 and a half minutes. In the end, platt racing were too strong and claimed a 3 lap victory. They also took the distance record in a dominant display. Bendigo senior secondary college, Grand theft mango claimed line honours in the secondary section over EDEC in second place.

19.01.2022 2017 AIPP. With Aurora taking time away and Trisled now supplying PHP rather than running a factory team, it looked like a straight out fight between Relentless, Wattle and PHP. You would be forgiven for looking at the photos at the start of this race and thinking South Australia's climate had drastically changed! The teams all gridded up as usual ready for the start, but the wind was absolutely howling through the parklands. The start was postponed for a few hours, which was... absolutely the correct decision. When the race did get underway, Team relentless absolutely bolted. They managed to run away to a very comprehensive victory. This was to be the first victory for the team at Murray Bridge. Wattle racing finished second, with unhinged managing their first podium. The PHP development team finished fourth.

18.01.2022 Hi everyone. I hope it was a safe and happy New Year. Next up is the photo library of the 2012 RACV Energy Breakthrough. I can remember a couple of things about the 2012 event.... 1, I had to leave for a work breakdown at 2 o'clock on Thursday morning. 2, Bendigo Senior constructed a trike from scratch in a tent, at the track and won the trial overall!

16.01.2022 I’ve been asked a bit lately why I’ve started riding recumbents often again. So I thought I’d share the story of my last 18 months with you all. On Easter Monday in 2019, I was out on my mountain bike, for the final run before a race the weekend after. I got about 7 kms into the ride, when my front wheel washed out and I fell at a reasonable speed. Unfortunately for me I wasn’t able to get my hands down in time to stop my fall. I hit my face and head on an exposed rock and go...Continue reading

15.01.2022 2011 RACV EB- Thursday

13.01.2022 The 2013 RACV Energy Breakthrough was run under very changeable conditions. Thursday and Friday were very warm, but on Saturday the heavens opened shortly after the start just to make things interesting. Berwick Grammar School had an immaculate race, with their coreflute (corex) vehicle finishing the trial in first place and in pristine condition.... They shared the overall honours with Kingswood college, who scored very well in the display and design sections. There are quite a few albums here. Ill start with some generic shots of the start, then run folders from Thursday through to sunday.

10.01.2022 Scott asked about a trike called "footloose" that was a bit of a cult figure in the mid 90's. it was actually a quad, that started life as a single seater hybrid and developed into a tandem Hybrid. It was built by Wycheproof school. I have actually recently found this vehicle sitting under a carport, as it finished its last race in 1998! ill do a story on it soon.

09.01.2022 2015 AIPP. this year looked very much like a new era was beginning. Platt racing and Tru Blu had both retired, opening the door for some new challengers. Aurora racing was back, with a brand new lightweight carbon weapon, with help from the team at HP racing. Relentless racing purchased the Platt trike that was built for 2015 and Wattle racing had a brand new slick looking racer.... Trisled had a new refined version of its aquila 2 model. The race started under beautiful warm spring conditions, with Aurora racing, trisled, wattle and relentless riding away from the competition. Eventually Aurora pulled away, with some slick pit stops and a super strong riding team. This coupled with a reliable and tough trike, meant that they were able to skip away to a 16 lap victory over trisled. Wattle racing finishing third, whilst relentless recovered from a pretty big crash to finish fourth. A long red flag period put paid to any chance of the distance record being broken, in what would be the last race on the traditional circuit.

08.01.2022 2016 AIPP. This year again looked to deliver the goods. Aurora was back with a brand new vehicle, as was Toothless, Trisled and Team relentless. Team relentless were running a Trump prototype, that had a locomotive style pedal system, which was a sensational piece of engineering. Its great to see innovations in the sport. The race morning dawned pretty wet, with the start looking to be run on a very damp track.... This is where Aurora took a massive advantage. With the track being wet and lap times down, they decided to run the order in reverse, with the slightly slower but more experienced guys first. This meant that when it dried up, the quicker guys could really go flat out. This is exactly how it played out and Aurora were able to cruise to a comfortable victory over wattle racings toothless and team relentless taking a very solid third place. The Trisled development team, which consisted of some young students whose schools did not participate, took the win in the senior secondary category.

08.01.2022 Braden asked earlier about the history of carbon wheels in Australian HPV. The earliest i can remember at a race track, was Greenspeed at the 2004 wonthaggi GP. I've attached some photos of trikes that had one or more carbon wheel at some stage in its life. There will be many more, so feel free to add to the list! (yes I included yours Braden ;)

08.01.2022 2010 saw the re-emergence of traditional rivals Highview and Bendigo Senior. Both had gone away and built brand new trikes for 2010 and both were very fast! The weather was absolutely stunning and typically very hot. The race started with both bendigo and Highview setting a cracking pace. Visiting Queenslanders from St Mary's and Victorian team Woodleigh school were also in the mix. As the flag dropped, Bendigo Senior took line honours with Highview taking the runner up posi...tion. A very strong Design and display section meant that Highview managed to claim the overall win. See more

06.01.2022 A reply to Alex Asquith, who asked about the flying scotsman. Now this is the 2008 version that Alex was referring to, but Highview college actually had many trikes over the years called The flying scotsman. Ill post the older versions next!

06.01.2022 2013 RACV Energy Breakthrough- Thursday images

05.01.2022 Hello everyone, I hope you’re enjoying your Saturday. I’ve unintentionally ended up in Maryborough today on my way to Ballarat. It’s a very different third Saturday in November to the past 23 for me that’s a for sure!

04.01.2022 2012 AIPP. This was shaping up to be another tight battle. Tru Blu returned this year with a brand new trike, that had taken the win and distance record at the wonthaggi 24 hour earlier in the year. With Blueshift having the year off, team leader Dean stepped into the tru Blu team. Aurora racing had built a brand new trike and turned up with their strongest team so far.... Reigning champs Team Phantom were down a little bit on horsepower compared to the top 2, but were still looking like being a strong contender. The race started with Tru Blu and Aurora gapping the field, with a young Brenton Hassett in the bendigo senior secondary college Front wheel drive trike, briefly leading before a spectacular crash at the esses. As the race got closer to the halfway mark, Aurora had a commanding lead and looked like they would run away with the race. the gap was slowly blowing out. The Tru Blu riders rallied overnight and managed to get the lead back as the sun was coming up. Having saved a couple of riders with longer stints overnight, they were able to win comfortably in the end. Team phantom rode a fantastic race, to claim a very solid third place. Another new addition to field, was a new trike manufacturer, Sutton cycles. Luke and Jason had built up a unique new chassis and fairing design and competed for the first time. The presentation and quality was absolutely first class!

02.01.2022 Recently ive been asked by a lot of people, why we don’t have an historic type hpv racing scene. It’s actually a very interesting thought. Perhaps a spec book from around 2001, no composites, riders over 30? What are people’s thoughts on a once a year type gathering to race old style trikes, similar to how it’s done in motorsport?

02.01.2022 Ben Harnetty was absolutely spot on with the trivia question. The vehicle was a petrol/electric hybrid from Bendigo senior secondary. it was indeed called "my left nut". 2001 was the first year of the new Holden track as it was then known. that photo is of a practice day held at the new circuit a few weeks out from the event. Below is a pic of the trike in race paint.

01.01.2022 Merry Christmas to all. I hope everybody has a wonderful day and safe holiday break. I’ll be back on the photos again tomorrow
