16.01.2022 Spike in grog-running to NT communities by AAP NEWSWIRE 14th September 2020... The NT government is fighting grog running to indigenous communities. - AAP Takeaway alcohol buyers in the Darwin area will be forced to show identification as the Northern Territory attempts to stamp out "grog-running". The NT government on Monday enacted emergency powers after a spike in the illegal transportation of alcohol to "dry" remote indigenous communities. "In one instance alone, more than 100 bottles of rum were seized," Acting Assistant Liquor Commissioner Bradley Currie said. Mr Currie said black market alcohol had led to a sharp rise in alcohol-related incidents in remote communities. "Residents can also be left unable to purchase food, fuel or other essential goods and services," he said. Under the emergency powers, bottle shops in Greater Darwin will be required to ask customers for identification that shows a residential address in the area. This can be waived if the salesperson is happy the customer has a lawful place of residence to consume the alcohol. The liquor commissioner will review the requirements after seven days.

16.01.2022 Great Northern launches new zero-alcohol beer in time for wet season THE Great Northern beer brand is launching its first alcohol-free range this month, and according to brand ambassador Matt Wright it will be a good fit for the Territorian lifestyle. WILL ZWAR, NT News... | September 3, 2020 2:37pm Another beer with zero alcohol content: NTNEWS.COM.AU0:45 Matt Wright Monster Croc Wrangler A SOBER blue marlin will soon adorn the front of Great Northern beer bottles, with the Carlton United Brewery’s brand launching its first alcohol-free range. But the Great Northern Zero will taste just like any other Great Northern, according to croc wrangler and Great Northern ambassador Matt Wright. He said the zero-alcohol option would suit Territorians enjoying the great outdoors while trying to relieve themselves from the heat. Someone like myself, I’m always flying helicopters, driving a boat or driving a vehicle and it’s always hot in the Territory so you want a beer all the time but the options not there, Mr Wright said. Now having a beer without alcohol, there’s a lot more options. I can take a six pack (of Great Northern Zero) heli-fishing and still have a few beers. Carlton United Breweries NT sales manager Lincoln Jenkin said the new zero option was the Great Northern’s first foray into non-alcoholic beer, which is the fastest growing segment in the Australian beer industry. It looks like Great Northern and is much like the great Northern most beer drinkers know and love, he said. It’s perfect for our weather all year around camping, fishing, all the things we do. The Great Northern Zero will be available in Territory pubs, clubs and bottle shops from the middle of September.

11.01.2022 Again, this is interesting - a condition to show proof of residence that does not usually apply to take-away outlets in Darwin, but only via the PALIs in regional towns. It has applied for some months as an emergency COVID measure, but how will this line up with other Darwin outlets once, and if, the emergency measure ( of 7-day renewals by the Director of Licensing) is lifted? Has the NTG been skewered into providing such a measure in Darwin? https://www.abc.net.au//nt-dan-murphy-darwin-give/12996650

05.01.2022 NT News opinion - opposed to use of BDR at Tennant and Elliot pubs. 12.1.21 THE latest proposal by the Northern Territory Liquor Commission, that if adopted would require hotel licensees to check a person’s ID every time they buy a drink at the bar, is a cause for concern.... EDITORIAL, NT News Subscriber only January 12, 2021 Barkly publicans question proposed liquor laws that would target only three venues. Barkly pubs could be required to scan your ID for a beer under new Liquor Commission proposal. THE latest proposal by the Northern Territory Liquor Commission, that if adopted would require hotel licensees to check a person’s ID every time they buy a drink at the bar, is a cause for concern. At this stage the proposal only applies to three Barkly venues. Under the proposed rules, the Tennant Creek Hotel, Goldfields Hotel and the Elliott Hotel will have to use the Banned Drinker Register at the bar each time someone buys a drink. All three venues have a large Indigenous clientele. There has been no explanation why these places have been singled out although the licensees have their suspicions why. Under the proposed new liquor rules, the Tennant Creek Hotel, Goldfields Hotel and the Elliott Hotel will have to use the Banned Drinker Register at the bar each time someone buys a drink. Under the proposed new liquor rules, the Tennant Creek Hotel, Goldfields Hotel and the Elliott Hotel will have to use the Banned Drinker Register at the bar each time someone buys a drink. The fear is it will only be a matter of time before the proposed Liquor Commission rules are forced on to other regional centres. We’ve seen it before where these experiments to contain alcohol consumption have been implemented first in a small regional centre and then used as a model for the whole of the Territory. The Banned Drinker Register is already clunky and time consuming. Making bar staff check a person’s ID every time they go to the bar to buy a drink will only make it worse. Can you imagine the problem it would create in pubs, bars and clubs in Darwin? The Northern Territory government must make it clear whether it supports the Banned Drinker Register in Barkly pubs and across the Territory.
