25.01.2022 Foremost in our mind embarking again on such a significant project are thoughts eloquently expressed by this mum of two Pachamama children. We are grateful for the motivation to keep going in both the heat (and then downpours) of this week ... keeping in mind the lasting legacy we are aiming to create for the community.

14.01.2022 Long after ownership by Edith Cowan's husband, two acres of the large land parcel was purchased by Archibald and Inez Irving in 1958. In stark contrast to their dusty Kojonup inland farmland upon which they raised their four children (in Western Australia's Great Southern region), this green lush pear orchard property was situated on a hillside adjacent to Crystal Brook. It was to be their pleasure and enjoyment during their retirement years. As Pachamama connects with the l...and and its history, we came into possession of photographs taken by the Irving family. Recording the area's landscape in the 1950's, they depict the construction of the homestead designed by Mrs Irving and constructed by Walter Buckeridge (a local Lesmurdie resident who had owned the property since 1922). Having undergone numerous renovations and extensions over the past 60 years, the building presents very differently today. It is exciting for Pachamama to see the building in its original state and learn more of its history as we prepare it for what we hope to be the decades ahead of the local children's enjoyment and learning.

10.01.2022 We are so very pleased to announce our new Pachamama Nature Way Project! It is aimed at allowing us to provide more children with the opportunity to become immersed in the proven benefits of nature during their most important formative years. We are hoping to transform this current residential property into another amazing Pachamama nature childcare environment as an extension to our existing Activity Centre. Concentrating mostly on creating an incredible "After School Car...e" in the afternoons for 7-12 year olds, we intend to offer a limited number of places in this beautifully serene natural environment for babies during the daytime. We invite you to walk with us on our journey as we document some of the process, philosophies and theories behind our transformation. In our dreams, it will be another amazing Pachamama Nature Way environment for children to explore and discover themselves, creating their own world of wonderment.

07.01.2022 Pachamama is proud to be a custodian (one of many) of Edith Cowan's legacy, expressed as it is upon a property first owned by her husband James Cowan. Recently discovered, we are excited to present some interesting and thought-provoking history. Below are two aerial photographs highlighting the area's development between 1965 to 2016. This recently purchased property at 59 Coolinga Road, Lesmurdie (indicated by the red arrow) is proposed to be the site for Pachamama's exci...ting Nature Way Project. Whilst designing this project, we discovered the land was originally granted to James Cowan in 1884, the husband of Edith Dircksey Cowan. Her husband's position of Perth's Police Magistrate gave Edith a unique insight into the wider social problems of the society of the day. Born near Geraldton, Western Australia, Edith missed out on the adolescence that many of our children enjoy today. Her mother's death during childbirth when she was 7 years old, followed by her father's subsequent hanging for his murder of his second wife in a drunken rage when she was 15 years old, fostered a solitary and determined young woman committed to social reform. An active contributor to many voluntary organisations, in 1909 Edith pioneered the concept of the "day nursery" for children of working mothers. Amongst the first women appointed as a member of the Children's Court bench (1915), she was a founder and vice president of the Women's Service Guild (until 1917) whose work led to the opening of the King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women. She was also fundamental to the creation of the Western Australian National Council of Women (1911), serving as its president until her death. Following the 1920 removal of legislation preventing female membership of Australia's Parliament, Edith wasted no time in getting elected. The first woman to be elected in Australia's history, she became a Federal Parliamentarian in 1921. A persistent advocate of migrant welfare, infant health centres and women's rights, Edith used her platform in Parliament to publicly advocate the need for a housewives' union, along with the need for sex education in state schools. Edith Cowan died on 9 June 1932. Buried in the Anglican section of Karrakatta cemetery, colleagues erected a clock tower at the entrance to King's Park in her memory as 'one of Australia's greatest women'. Leading a group of passionate, articulate women that forged Western Australia's women's movement, they created a model for women across the nation who advocated for equality. Her portrait is in the Western Australian Art Gallery. We are proud to be associated with her legacy, and look forward to Pachamama's Nature Way Project expressing the value of her tireless dedication to improving the lives of Western Australian's women and children. 07.01.2022 Over the past 6 months, we have worked so hard towards creating a beautiful environment of 'wonderment' for our older school-aged children with our Nature Way Project. Hoping to receive approval to use it for childcare purposes as an extension to our Pachamama Activity Centre. Shapes, colours, and movement surrounded by natural elements and repurposing. Many thanks to Martin Jaine at Earlsferry Sculptures to his team's amazing creativity and dedication to helping Pachamama develop a magical educational environment for the Lesmurdie community.
