25.01.2022 Is it smoky or hazy at your place? If you have respiratory issues, bushfires or dust storms nearby can trigger adverse reactions. It’s recommended you stay i...ndoors with windows and doors closed, follow any medical plan provided by your doctor such as an asthma management plan, and avoid vigorous exercise. If you experience shortness of breath, prolonged coughing or wheezing seek medical advice. There are other precautions we can all take! Air-conditioned environments can provide protection. If you have an air conditioner at home, turn it on and, if applicable, use them in a recirculate mode. Avoid outdoor activity. If you must go outside spend as little time outside as possible. Avoid vigorous exercise outside, especially if you have asthma, diabetes, heart disease or a breathing related condition. If you are an asthmatic or have a respiratory condition and you develop symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, or chest pain, follow your prescribed treatment plan. Continue to use your usual medication. Seek medical attention if your symptoms worsen. Dust storms may reduce visibility. Extra caution should be taken when driving. If your car is air-conditioned, reduce the amount of dust entering your car by switching the air intake to recirculate. Be careful when cleaning away the film of dust in homes afterwards use water to wipe it away, because sweeping and dusting will just stir it up again. See more

20.01.2022 If the cooler nights have you digging blankets and winter clothes out of storage for your baby, please avoid anything that has been stored with naphthalene (mot...hballs or flakes). Babies, particularly those less than six weeks of age, should not wear clothes or sleep in bedding stored with naphthalene because it can cause severe poisoning just through skin contact. Naphthalene is absorbed easily through the skin, especially in young babies. Babies less than six weeks of age are very sensitive to even small amounts because they cannot metabolise it. This means they can become very sick and take a long time to recover. The Queensland Poisons Information Centre does not recommend the use of naphthalene products as a moth repellent in baby clothes or bedding. Even washing clothing or blankets with soap or detergent and water does not remove all traces of naphthalene, so it’s best to just avoid it altogether. For poisoning advice 24 hours, 7 days a week, call the Queensland Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26.

18.01.2022 Health Alert: Smoke Smoke from bushfires is impacting regions across Queensland, in particular Brisbane, Gold Coast and Ipswich. If you can see smoke or d...ust in the air, you should limit your time spent outdoors until conditions clear. Fine smoke particles can cause health problems including: itchy or burning eyes, throat irritation, a runny nose and illnesses like bronchitis. They can also aggravate existing lung conditions, like chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and asthma. Symptoms can occur for several days after smoke is inhaled. Residents should: Move inside and stay inside as much as possible Close windows and doors Use fans or air conditioning on recirculating mode to keep cool Move outdoor events to an indoor venue or reschedule Keep medications close by if suffering a respiratory condition Be vigilant in taking prescribed medications for existing lung conditions Children, the elderly and anyone with a chronic illness or respiratory issue are at particular risk. Take care of these people by ensuring they stay inside and have any prescribed medications close by. Seek medical advice or call Triple Zero (000) if you or someone in your care is experiencing adverse reactions to smoke such as shortness of breath, prolonged coughing or wheezing. For information on air quality in your area follow the link below.

06.01.2022 MEASLES ALERT FOR GOLD COAST The Gold Coast Public Health Unit has been notified of a case of measles on the Gold Coast. The individual, whilst infectious..., travelled between the Gold Coast and Sydney on Tiger Airlines TT609 on the morning of Saturday, 29 June and between Sydney and the Gold Coast on Jetstar Airlines flight JQ420 on the morning of Tuesday, 2 July. Whilst on the Gold Coast, the individual visited a medical centre at Oxenford on 3 and 4 July. Tourist destinations at the Spit Main Beach and Marina Mirage were also visited whilst the person was infectious. Members of the public who were at these locations at the same time as the individual, need to be alert for symptoms of measles. This is followed a few days later by a blotchy, red rash which often starts on the face and then becomes widespread over the body. If you have any of the measles symptoms contact your GP and remember it is VERY important to call the medical practice first if you think you might have measles, so that staff can take precautions to avoid spreading it to others. Anyone born after 1965 who was in these areas and who has not been fully vaccinated against measles (two doses of MMR) should contact their GP. The measles vaccine is provided free for any person born after 1965. For more information on the measles virus visit the Queensland Health website or call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) for more information.
