09.01.2022 Public Health Alert: Queensland Queensland Health is asking anyone who has arrived in Queensland from New Zealand since 14 January 2021, including on gree...n corridor flights, to get tested and quarantine until you receive a negative test result. This comes after New Zealand recorded a confirmed positive COVID-19 case in a returned traveller who tested positive after completing 14 days of hotel quarantine. The woman has since visited a number of locations in New Zealand. The woman is confirmed to have the South African variant of COVID-19, which is more contagious than previous variants. We are urging anyone who has returned from New Zealand to get tested immediately, even if you do not have symptoms and to quarantine until you receive a negative result. Contact tracing is currently underway by New Zealand Health authorities. For anyone with concerns or is unsure if they need to get tested or isolate, please call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84). 07.01.2022 Southern and central Queensland prisons locked down: Stage 4 restrictions Queensland prisons from the NSW border up to and including Rockhampton have been locke...d down with Stage 4 restrictions due to an officer at the Queensland Corrective Services Academy testing positive to COVID-19. The QCS Academy has a COVIDSafe plan in place, including the requirement for social distancing, however as a precaution, it has been closed until forensic cleaning occurs. All officers who may have been in contact with this officer have been informed to attend a fever clinic and to self-isolate. As a precautionary measure, all southern and central Queensland prisons are now on stage 4 restrictions, on the advice of the Chief Health Officer (CHO): Palen Creek Correctional Centre Numinbah Correctional Centre Southern Queensland Correctional Centre Borallon Correctional Centre Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre Brisbane Correctional Centre Brisbane Womens Correctional Centre Wolston Correctional Centre Helana Jones Centre Woodford Correctional Centre Maryborough Correctional Centre Capricornia Correctional Centre These prisons are now locked down with non-essential out-of-cell time and prisoner movement suspended. Queensland Corrective Services is working urgently with Queensland Health to better understand the implications of this positive case, including identifying any close contacts and possible exposure. Only essential workers including officers and Queensland Health staff will be permitted entry to these prisons. Everyone entering the prison will undergo health screening including thermal imaging, and new reception prisoners are subject to 14-day isolation protocols. On advice from the CHO, all officers and essential workers entering these prisons must don a surgical face mask as PPE under the supervision of Queensland Health staff where they are unable to socially distance or are in close contact with a prisoner in excess of 15 minutes. This PPE will be provided by QCS. Officers working in Escort and Security Branch are required to wear a surgical mask and gloves when escorting prisoners.

05.01.2022 Up next: Dr Siautu Alefaio-Tugia Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Massey University (NZ). Dr Siautu has worked across education, prisons, disaster re...covery (including being a lead in the COVID-19 response in NZ), health, social services and community. A practitioner and academic, she theorises and practices to re-inform psychology from Pacific-indigenous knowledge frameworks. One interesting point to note from our chat is that Dr Siautu says that the field of psychology is a relatively young science; it was started and formed in Europe and then taken up in America. Therefore, Pasifika worldviews did not inform the large body of work early on and Pasifika people should be aware of this and what it means for us Make sure you tune in to hear why Dr Siautu says this is important in this fun yet critical conversation with someone whose work focuses on the brain , but who so obviously leads with her heart , spirit and culture in mind. Episode drops: Thursday 8am (AEST) #CultureCounts #PacificPsychology #NIUPatCH #MasseyUniversity #DrSiautuAlefaioTugia #Polypodcasts #Pasifika #Polynesia #Micronesia #Melanesia #Samoa #GPSP #Proud

05.01.2022 Since then immigration minister Scott Morrison oversaw the tightening of migration laws in late 2014, the federal Coalition has cancelled the visas of at least 6,000 residents. The largest distinct cohort affected has been New Zealanders, with around 2,300 having been deported. This program has seen the fortress Australia government internationally condemned over a deportation system that often sees long-term residents turfed out over the commission of minor offences, as we...ll as a growing proportion over posing a mere risk to health, safety or good order. Just this week, NZ prime minister Jacinta Ardern again criticised the deportation program. She claims it involves Australia deporting Australian criminals, as, at times, Kiwis who have spent almost their entire lives in this country meaning they’ve been raised here have been sent to NZ. 04.01.2022 All visits suspended at SEQ prisons: Stage 3 restrictions: https://corrections.qld.gov.au/all-visits-suspended-at-seq/ Due to cases of COVID-19 in the communit...y, all South-east Queensland prisons and Community Corrections districts from the NSW border up to and including Bundaberg have moved to Stage 3 restrictions. As you may be aware, further cases of COVID-19 have been identified at the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre, following the notification of a positive case for a youth worker at that facility on Wednesday this week. This latest development has meant Queensland Health is rapidly scaling up their contact tracing and testing of COVID-19 related to the latest cases. Accordingly, as contact tracing and testing continues, on the advice from the Chief Health Officer (CHO), a large number of our centres and offices have moved to Stage 3 Restrictions. Custodial Operations: Effective today (22 August) all South-east Queensland prisons have moved to Stage 3 Restrictions. All personal and professional visits including legal, service provider and official visits have been suspended to the following Queensland prisons on the advice of the Chief Health Officer (CHO): Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre Brisbane Correctional Centre Borallon Correctional Centre Brisbane Womens Correctional Centre Southern Queensland Correctional Centre Wolston Correctional Centre Woodford Correctional Centre Maryborough Correctional Centre Numinbah Correctional Centre Palen Creek Correctional Centre Helana Jones Centre Only essential workers including officers and Queensland Health staff will be permitted entry to these prisons. Every person entering the prison will undergo health screening including thermal imaging, and new reception prisoners are subject to 14-day isolation protocols. Community Corrections: Community Corrections offices in Southern, South Coast, Brisbane and North Coast districts, as well as Hervey Bay and Bundaberg have also moved to Stage 3 restrictions. This decision was made to protect the safety of our officers and the people under our care and supervision. These arrangements will be updated as new advice is received from Queensland Health. Contact the correctional centre or see our Information for Families (https://corrections.qld.gov.au/information-for-visitors-to/) page to find out about other ways you can talk to a prisoner.

01.01.2022 Watchdog sounds alarm about the use of force inside Australia's immigration detention centres... A scathing report into the operation of immigration detention centres in Australia has highlighted escalating concerns over the use of force against detainees. The Commonwealth Ombudsman issued the warning after monitoring detention centres over a six-month period from July to December last year. In his report, Commonwealth Ombudsman Michael Manthorpe said the detention system co...ntinues to be plagued by shortfalls in its handling of detainees. Of particular note is our increasing concerns about the use of force in detention facilities, his report reads. There appears to be an increasing tendency across the immigration detention network for force to be used to resolve conflict or non-compliant behaviour as the first rather than last choice. The report issues 12 recommendations four relating to the use of force and eight others relating to monitoring of facilities, including the need for better signage to advise detainees of their right to access legal services. Mr Manthorpe said he remains concerned about failures in privacy and mobility access within high security compounds, the management of complaints, use of restraints and length of detention faced by detainees. I remain concerned that people continue to be held for lengthy periods with, in some instances, no probability of being released in the foreseeable future, he wrote in the report. Delays in resolving the immigration status of detainees place considerable strain both on detainees and their families. The report identified improvements have been made in a number of areas, ranging from the provision of welfare services as well as transport and escort tasks. The Department of Home Affairs agreed with 11 out of 12 recommendations either in part or in full. The exception was a recommendation for the department to make an apology to a complainant over an incident relating to the alleged use of excessive force. Greens Deputy Leader Nick McKim said the watchdog's report reaffirmed the need for urgent reform of the immigration detention system. "This is an absolutely scathing report that exposes the true brutality of life in immigration detention," he told SBS News. "The department has a duty of care to these people, they are not in prison - this system should not be run in a punitive way to punish people." The ombudsmans findings follow an initial report published February this year which made 16 recommendations to improve the safety of detainees in immigration detention. The department has agreed to 15 of the 16 recommendations of the previous report. The office of Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton has been contacted for comment. https://www.sbs.com.au//watchdog-sounds-alarm-about-the-us
