24.01.2022 Showjumping fans, Gemma Alexander has been hard at work covering the action at Aachen http://www.horsemagazine.com//mercedes-benz-nations-cup-m/

24.01.2022 Gemma Alexander reports from Aachen: CLASS ONE STAWAG Opening Competition The first class of the day was the STAWAG Opening Competition, which saw a lovely fl...owing course set at 1.45m, being a single round judged on penalties and time. Being the warm-up day most of the riders were content with slower flowing rounds, without much regard for time. It wasnt until the eighth on course that we got our first clear under the time allowed: Gerrit Nieberg (GER) and the bay mare Quibelle de la Coeur (Quincy Jones x Ravallo). The next to really catch my eye was the big, rather plain looking gelding Important de Muze (Erco van T Roosakker x Nabab de Rêve) with Darragh Kenney (IRL), an expressive clear with just one time to add. We soon began to see some bogey fences emerging, such as the big oxer across the centre of the ring at 6, the vertical at 11 where riders were turning up short to save time, and the final vertical-oxer double at 12AB. A couple of big names had unexpected rails, including recent LGCT Paris 5* Grand Prix winner Take A Chance On Me Z (Taloubet Z x Aldatus) with Germanys Christian Ahlmann, and the prolific winner Gazelle (Kashmir van Schuttershof x Indoctro) with Kent Farrington (USA). Another to really impress was PSG Final (Toulon x Cassini) with Cian OConnor (IRL): powerful, adjustable, and just so flash; clear with just two time to add. It was so wonderful to see Portugals Luciana Diniz back in the ring with her super little mare Fit For Fun (For Pleasure x Fabriano) after an extended break due to injuries; the little mare skipped around the course like she had never been away, just two time to add. Jur Vrieling (NED) and Dallas VDL put in an impressive round what a canter! with tight lines and no time wasted in corners, for the fastest clear yet at 70.47 seconds. The very next out was Frances Olivier Robert with Vadrouille dAvril (Popayann x Quatar de Plape) set a blistering pace right from the first; it was a little bit wild and a little bit unorthodox, but it was fast! 67.59 seconds and clear. An unhurried, flowing clear from megastar Toveks Mary Lou (Montendro x Portland L) with Swedens Henrik von Eckermann saw them just add four time. Bertram Allen (IRL) and GK Casper (Canto 16 x Quantum) put in some excellent trademark Bertram turns, for a travelling but not rushed clear; the gelding with the big rangey canter stopped the clock at 71.10 seconds. Next out Marcus Ehning (GER) with the cute little grey mare Calanda 42 (Calido I x Chasseur I) gave it a real go excellent, classy fast clear in 70.27 and into 2nd place. Round of the class for me came from number 46 in the draw, the USAs Laura Kraut with the stunning dark bay stallion Berdenn de Kergane (Quaprice Bois Margot x Flipper dElle); he was fast, playful between the fences without losing his rhythm, and textbook over the jumps; a fraction too slow to take the lead, but 68.21 seconds and into second. Final results from the class: 1. FRA Olivier Robert Vadrouille dAnvil (Popayann x Quatar de Plape) 2. USA Laura Kraut Berdenn de Kergane (Quaprice Bois Margot x Flipper dElle) 3. GER Marcus Ehning Calanda 42 (Calido I x Chasseur I) 4. NED Jur Vrieling Dallas VDL (Douglas x Heartbreaker) 5. IRL Bertram Allen GK Casper (Canto 16 x Quantum) 6. SUI Martin Fuchs Silver Shine (Califax x Balou du Rouet) 7. GER Gerrit Nieberg Quibelle de la Coeur (Quincy Jones x Ravallo) 8. SWE Evalina Tovek Cortina 212 (Contendro I x Waechter) CLASS TWO Sparkassen Youngster Cup The second class on day one of jumping was round one of the Sparkassen Youngster Cup, set at 1.40m for seven year olds and then raised by 5cm for the eight year olds. As with the first class of the day, the competition was a single round judged on penalties and time. An inviting flowing course was set for the youngsters, with lots of curving related lines and two doubles, but no nasty tricks to try and catch them out. First on course was the lovely big plain bay Generously Paid For (Bamako de Muze x Diamant de Semilly) with the USAs Nicole Shahinian-Simpson; a big scopey jumper, just 10A down and one time fault. The first clear didnt come until number five in the draw, the fancy little powerhouse Malissa de Muze (Vigo dArsouilles x For Pleasure) with Lorenzo de Luca (ITA); this little mare jumped a super round with textbook technique and ground covering canter in a time of 70.78 seconds. One that really grabbed my attention was Quiwitino WZ (Quiwi Dream x Caretino) with Feix Hassmann (GER); impressive canter, sharp technique and just overall a very nice picture, clear but a tad slower than Lorenzo at 73.29 seconds. The bogey fences were proving to be the vertical at 7 and the double at 10AB which was approached by a bending 8 strides heading towards the ingate. Despite these, the clears were coming thick and fast, however time was proving to be a factor for some. Number 17 in the draw was Germanys Christian Kukuk with the pretty little grey stallion Mumbai (Diamant de Semilly x Nabab de Rêve), who produced a flowing round with his scopey sharp jump in the deceptively fast time of 68.81 seconds to take the lead. However they were knocked off their perch by the very next into the ring, Melia de Regor (Elvis Ter Putte x Cento) with Gregory Wathelet (BEL), who got a bit lucky through the second double, but their tights turns and motoring between fences paid off with a time of 67.31 seconds and the lead. The fences were then raised 5cm for the eight-year-old component of the competition, and the first out was Davenport VDL (Diamant de Semilly x Indoctro) with Laura Klaphake (GER), and this stallions canter was seriously WOW! He jumped with so much power and scope and put in a really beautiful round, but too slow to be in the placings. Next out was Gerrit Nieberg (GER) and Ben 431 (Sylvain x Quincy Jones) who was at times a bit awkward, but an economical jump with no time wasted saw them land near the top of the leaderboard with 68.28 seconds. Number 25 in the draw brought Scott Brash (GBR) with Hello Franklin (Billy Mexico x Goodtimes) who set a blistering pace from the start. A little tricky into 5AB, but a very fast yet classy round to take the lead with 66.32 seconds. Another to really catch my eye was the next into the ring, Fiumicino van de Kalevallei (Plot Blue x Nabab de Rêve) with the Netherlands Jur Vrieling, who was scopey, extremely flash behind and really clever when he found himself in a tight spot! A nice clear in 71.31 seconds to slot into the placings. Number 30 out was the chunky little Garant (Warrant x Verdi TN) with Beezie Madden (USA), who travelled absolutely beautifully to finish clear in a time of 69.07 seconds. A tense but quick round from Henrik von Eckermann (SWE) and Little Magic dAsschaut (Back Gammon x Nonstop) saw them land in third place with 67.96 seconds. Steve Guerdat (SUI) came in towards the end of the field on a very nice little stallion Albfuehrens Maddox (Cohiba 1198 x Maraton), who jumped with great expression and a lovely canter, but not quite quick enough to make the placings. And right towards the end of the draw we saw Israels Daniel Bluman with Gemma W (Luidam x Unaniem), who was just so scopey and cleared every fence by miles, however this cost them some time, and their lovely soft round saw them finish the competition in a credible 12th position. Final results from the class: 1. GBR Scott Brash Hello Franklin (Billy Mexico x Goodtimes) 2. BEL - Gregory Wathelet Melia de Regor (Elvis Ter Putte x Cento) 3. SWE Henrik von Eckermann Little Magic dAsschaut (Back Gammon x Nonstop) 4. GER Gerrit Nieberg Ben 431 (Sylvain x Quincy Jones) 5. GER Christian Kukuk Mumbai (Diamant de Semilly x Nabab de Rêve) 6. USA Beezie Madden Garant (Warrant x Verdi TN) 7. GER Patrick Stühlmeyer For Laubry (For Passion D Ive Z x Quorum de Laubry) 8. ITA Lorenzo de Luca Malissa de Muze (Vigo dArsouilles x For Pleasure) 9. 11.01.2022 History Made by Waikatos EquiBreed Waikato company EquiBreed NZ has made history with the birth of New Zealands first foal produced by an in vitro fertility... treatment using intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Company principal Dr Lee Morris says it is a watershed moment for both EquiBreed and New Zealand. The ability to produce foals using this fertility treatment puts New Zealand on the world stage. Now it will be possible to breed horses using a single sperm cell and to culture the embryos in the laboratory until they are ready for transfer. The imported warmblood mare Wonette (by Papillon Rouge out of Sonette who is by Cavalier) is owned by Te Hihi Farms at Karaka and had been unable to carry a pregnancy due to damage sustained from a previous foaling. After many failed attempts, ICSI became her only option. Sperm was used from showjumping stallion Bravado Ego Z to produce a gorgeous chestnut filly in Sienna. The ICSI procedure used is very similar to that used in humans and involves recovering eggs from the mares ovaries while she is sedated. The eggs are cultured in the laboratory until they are ready for fertilisation. Then a tiny amount of semen is washed and a single sperm cell selected for injection into each egg. The resulting embryos are cultured for 8-10 days in the laboratory before being transferred to a surrogate mare or frozen for future use. That ICSI can now be done in New Zealand has opened up a whole new world for Kiwi breeders. It is already taking the United States and Europe by storm. This technique will allow Kiwi breeders to overcome fertility problems in their mares and access better genetics from all over the world as well as produce embryos at a fraction of the cost of a regular embryo transfer programme, says Dr Morris who has been working on perfecting the technique for a number of years. EquiBreed NZ is based in Te Awamutu and considered to be New Zealands leading equine reproductive company. https://www.equibreed.co.nz Image: History-making foal Sienna who is New Zealands first foal produced by an in vitro fertility treatment using intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). . 09.01.2022 SEX SORTED SEMEN SUCCESS! Something exciting happened when Legend of Loxley came to visit us recently..... One of his collections was processed at the ST Geneti...cs sex sorting laboratory. This has resulted in a positive pregnancy, providing a greater than 95% chance of producing (in this case) a filly foal. The laboratory has been located at our Camperdown centre since 2011, and is the only sex sorting laboratory in Australia. It has been commercially sorting semen from other species into both female and male cells. This is the first time we have utilised this technology on equine semen. Thanks to David Shoobridge for his assistance in organising, and to Heather Adcock for letting us borrow Legend of Loxley and his excellent quality semen. Also thanks to Ponneelan Ganesan and the STgenetics team and of course our hard working TEG team. See more

08.01.2022 On Monday evening I published a new episode of my podcast, Big Talk For Breeders. This time it's with renowned Dutch breeder Jan Greve. www.watermolen.net Three... weeks ago I emailed Jan and a few days later I was on my way to meet and visit him at his stable for the very first time. A man very much to the point, extremely knowledgable, not afraid to go his own way or speak his mind. We spent six hours together and finished up the (fascinating) visit by recording this podcast. Side note: If there's a breeder you'd really like to meet, just do it - contact them and make it happen. What breeder (established or otherwise) doesn't enjoy talking about their breeding programme with a fellow breeder?! I learn so much from spending time with such established breeders and it's now extra enjoyable to be able to share these podcast interviews with my fellow sport horse breeders & enthusiasts. To those who have listened to this interview over the past 48 hours, and taken the time the time to message me, thank you. I really do love hearing the feedback - the learnings, favorite quotes, etc. This particular episode seems to be getting quite the reaction so far. If you haven't already listened you can do so (for free) at the link below: https://soundcloud.com//big-talk-for-breeders-with-jan-gre
