24.01.2022 Of course none of us are flitting off to Europe in a hurry these days . . . but here’s a little reminder it’s still there and looking just as charming as ever. Clovis Donizetti in St Jean de Luz - the trim, the style, the elegance, the sardines. Pic: Thomas Lodin @thomaslodin @clovisdonizetti
24.01.2022 Our cover photo from 14 years ago (Vol 8#5) - Jennifer Flanigan with a daring noseride on a big flat single-fin (logging wasn't born yesterday). Out of Florida, Jenni is a super accomplished longboarder and a fine writer, and that’s a killer, no-fuss move - shot on film (as everything was then) by Neil Armstrong on the East Coast of NZ. Print lives. @surftaiwan
23.01.2022 Proto logger Dane Peterson - right up there in any Best There Ever Was rankings, no question. This shot ran big in print in the mag must have been 15 years ago (just can’t seem to find that issue this morning), Dane in the late arvo light at Tea Tree, shot on film by Neil Armstrong. Just smooth on every level that. Print lives. @surftaiwan @d_peto
22.01.2022 SUNDAY GOLD: Cool or what - one shot from our 10-page tribute to surf/shaper/artist/gent Garry Birdsall in the mag a few years back (Vol 19#5 - with words by Marcus James). Garry and his ’48 Morris Tourer overlooking Cronulla Point. Back seat removed, boot open for the balsa board, Birdsall trashy-elegant in silk-lined greatcoat and turned-up 4 jean cuffs - look out James Dean, here’s the real deal. Shot in the very early ’60s by the late great Jack Eden, it remains one of Australian surfing’s most enduring images. Print lives.
21.01.2022 Wonder if young Basque surfer Marie Chauché has ever watched Evolution . . . or maybe it’s just serendipity she’s got the Wayne Lynch cuttie stance down. It also happens Marie's surfing that same stretch of coast just north of Biarritz where Paul Witzig shot the French scenes for that classic surf film 52 years ago. Some moves are just timeless right? 21.01.2022 Tip command and yet to get the hair wet - surfer/shaper/artist Sean Kenny on one of his own Avocados For Lunch label Nirvana Noserider models at Four Doors, SanO. Pic: Jordan Anast @jordananast @avocadosforlunch
20.01.2022 FRIDAY FLASHBACK: Our extraordinary cover photo of Corey Colapinto from a few years back (Vol. 19#5) shot by Rick Bickford at Cottons, San Onofre. With his arch turns and rail-grab cutties and switchfoot noserides and switchfoot everythings, Corey just might be the freshest scone in the bakery - and this remains among our all-time favourite covers. Print is where we live. Rick'nPaula Bickford Corey Colapinto Surfboards by Donald Takayama
19.01.2022 SUNDAY GOLD: Our annual Instagram post of PLB’s editor JB (got to give him a bit of an ego stroke every now and then). G-Land, Java around 1990, and already pretty crowded. On a 7’2 Jeff Johnson shaped for Jeff Hakman, a bloke shot this from a rubber ducky in the channel and later mailed it to him after it was processed.
18.01.2022 Lucy Small in Spain. One of favourite feature writers, Lucy has a finely layered piece on travels through Algeria in the next issue of the mag btw - which we just delivered to the printer yesterday - yay! Pic Andrew Carruthers @andrewcarruthersphotography @saltwaterpilgrim
18.01.2022 Up front and fanging, Kaitlin Mikkelsen (Maguire then) at Encinitas. This ran as our double page Contents spread in the mag some eight years ago (Vol 16#3). Seaside Reef speed. Pic: Paula Bickford @paulita1954 @rocketmanrb88
17.01.2022 Roisin Carolan solo on a chattery wall, Northern NSW. This is one shot from the 10-page "Queen RoRo profile of Roisin in the mag a couple of years ago (Vol. 20#4), with words by Mia Bolton and stunner photos from Fran Miller. Print Lives. @franmiller.com.au @mmmbolt @roro.carolan
16.01.2022 SUNDAY GOLD: Mike Turkington with spectators at Yokohama Bay in 1963. ‘Turk’ grew up in Kailua on the East Coast of Oahu, the windward side, and became a standout at Sunset, Waimea and particularly at Pipeline. He always shaped his own boards and founded Country Surfboards. Photo and caption are by Tom Keck, and it's just one of many unique shots in the 12-page Photo Keck article in the mag a couple of years back (Vol 20#1). A youthful 83 now, Tom’s still shooting.

14.01.2022 FRIDAY FLASHBACK: Here’s our cover shot from six years ago (Vol. 18#5). Lunchtime in Costa Rica? Not really, just smoko in the middle of Australia’s largest city. Surfer Dave Coburn. Photo Mark Onorati Mark Onorati Bennett Surfboards @cheese_threethousand
12.01.2022 SUNDAY GOLD: Before phones and fillers - the mighty Kurranulla Wahines, 1966. Started by Lynette Clemitson, Sharon Whittaker, Sylvia and Sandy Hoogeveen, and Dianne Milling, the Cronulla based club had 35 members from all walks of life. Together for several years, the Wahines had regular club comps and inter-club meets with the strong all-womens East Coast club out of Bronte, and also Manly and Windansea on Sydney's Northern Beaches. The comps were fine, but really it was al...l about just surfing together, Lynette recalls today from her home in Noosa. The whole group did regular trips away in a convoy of cars and the locals in those little coastal towns didn’t know what hit them. We just had so much fun! The brilliant Bob Weeks took this photo, scanned from one of his self-processed 12 x 10" prints. We ran it in the mag as our Page 3 some 15 years ago in Vol. 8#3. Check out more Bob at: bobweeksphotography.com.au See more
11.01.2022 Flicking favourites: The splendour of Victoria’s Great Ocean Road, with young Californian Tommy Coleman doing the surroundings justice. This ran big in the Lens Flair pages of the magazine in Vol 21#4. Print lives. Pic: Andrea Coleman @andreacolemanphoto @tomnnycoleman @bingsurfboards @rvcasurf

06.01.2022 Roisin Carolan nailing Lennox Head - our Contents double-page spread in the mag a few years ago (Vol 20 #1). Said photographer Fran Miller: Winter swell and The Point was solid, and given the speed of the wave this is technical power surfing, executed with all the finesse Roisin is renowned for. Can only agree, and beautifully shot too we might add, a speed blur on a sunny day. And it looked rather good so big in print. Fran Miller Photography Roisin Carolan @franmiller.com.au @roro.carolan
05.01.2022 Smack the lip and the board smiles back - Victorian shaper, original logger, and fine artist Jordie Brown, from the ten-page Logging Tasmania article in the mag some nine years ago (Vol.14#3), with jumping land and sea photos from Scott Wintle. Scott Wintle HIGH TIDE Surfboards @scottwintle1968 @hightidesurfboards
03.01.2022 Straight line fever - Josh Seemann, somewhere in California. A couple of killers of Josh in the next issue of the mag btw - at printer now Pics: Tanner Olthoff @tannerolthoff @seemonnster
03.01.2022 The stars and stripes forever. As THAT election looms, young Griffen Glenn and his patriotic board steer a fine line across smooth waters, Upper Trestles, San Clemente. (May love and peace prevail.) Pic: Brian Bengelsdorf @brianbengel @grifglennn @stewart_surfboards
02.01.2022 Kai Ellice-Flint out for a drive on a Gato Herói 9’4 Jungle Acid from Wild Things in Byron Bay at a fickle Northern NSW river-mouth. Still shot by Andy Findlay - check out Dom Sullivan's four-minute vid at: pacificlongboarder.com Kai Ellice-Flint Andy Findlay
02.01.2022 SUNDAY GOLD: Is surfing really an Olympic sport? One shot from the 12-page Photo Keck article a couple of years back (Vol 20#1), with unique photos by Tom Keck dating from the 1950s to recent. A youthful 82 now, Tom’s caption read: This surf safari was an adventure to Swamis Point in 1959. The boards were balsa still and the surfers liked to dress up a bit and these we’re a good mix from different areas of San Diego County. L to R: Roger Ryan, Doug Vann, Phil Thorpe, Tom Carlin (in helmet), Steve Lindsey, Wendy Wagner, Rodney Spence and Bob Moore. Tom broke out an expensive roll of Kodachrome 10 on this day too . . . and how cool the colours, and the boards pre foam, the vehicles, the helmet . . .
01.01.2022 Cold water is heavier right? Shyama Buttonshaw taking a long line on a 9’10 Glider he handshaped and glassed out of his studio at Bells Beach. Pic: Judy Scanlon
01.01.2022 Hang it! Vaimiti Teiefitu off Moorea, French Polynesia. We woke early and paddled the va’a (canoe) out to the spot and had some dolphins playing with us on the way. Got there before the morning wind and Vai was on fire! After this wave she was caught by a big set that broke her magic Somo longboard . . . but still she was smiling from all these glassy waves she got. This photo ran full size as our Out The Back page a few issues back. Pic & comment: Lorenzo Avvenenti @tahitiandreamprod @vaimiti @somo_surfboards
01.01.2022 We have a 10-page profile of Eurico Kiko" Romaguera titled The Portuguese Prince in the current issue of the mag, and with words by Beatriz Fonesca and photos by Joao Bracourt it’s all rather brilliant - like, this shot of Kiko didn’t make the cut! The new issue of the mag is at the printer now btw. Print lives! @joao_bracourt @euricoromaguera
