25.01.2022 "Im the only one?" Eduardo Sareno asked his rescuers. Adrift at sea with only a life jacket, the sole survivor was plucked from turbulent seas yesterday after ...having been forced to abandon ship. Gulf Livestock 1 lost power after encountering Typhoon Maysak. Without power, the ship was vulnerable in the face of massive waves that capsized the vessel, which then sunk. A lifeboat was located, but it was empty. The vessel with its remaining 42 crew (inc. 2 Australians, 2 New Zealanders, and 38 Filipinos) and the 5,800 head of cattle being carried are yet to be located. Please pray for everyone involved in and affected by this tragedy. 25.01.2022 A ro/ro ferry capsized of Koh Samui Island in the Gulf of Thailand on Saturday night, leaving four missing and one dead. The deceased has been identified as the vessels master. At about 2045 hours, the ferry Raja 4 left the pier at Koh Samui, bound for the mainland port of Don Sak. She encountered high winds and rough surface conditions at about 2200 hours, and she capsized about two nm off the coast of the island. The Koh Samui police force sent two patrol boats to conduct ...a search and rescue operation, and despite the foul weather, they located and saved seven crew members and two truck drivers. Two additional crew members were found on Koh Taen Island at noon on Sunday. One of the survivors told Bangkok Post that he had stayed afloat on debris and drifted the two nm distance from the site of the sinking to shore. Later Sunday afternoon, SAR teams located the body of the vessels master, Capt. Tewin Surat, on nearby Koh Mod Daeng Island. Four people - two crew members, one truck driver and one supernumerary - were still missing Sunday afternoon, according to local media. Chinese state-owned outlet Xinhua reported that an additional two bodies had been located by divers Sunday. See more

25.01.2022 The bodies of two missing crew members from the dredging vessel Waymon L Boyd have been recovered after a portion of the vessel was recovered from the Corpus Christi Ship Channel on Monday. We can confirm that all four missing crewmen have been recovered, said Mark Stauffer, CEO of Orion Marine Group, which owns the dredge. The portion of the dredging vessel was located in the middle of the channel during diving operations Sunday. With the recovery, all four missing crew me...mbers are now accounted for and the families have been notified, the Coast Guard said. Pollution response and salvage operations of the dredging vessel are ongoing. As of Tuesday, approximately 1,600 gallons of diesel fuel has been removed from the water, according to the Coast Guard. The fire on the dredge Waymon L Boyd broke out around 8 a.m. on Friday, August 21, at the Port of Corpus Christi, causing the vessel to break up and sink. A U.S. Coast Guard rescue helicopter rescued two crew members with injuries. Four others were missing. The cause of the incident is under investigation. See more

23.01.2022 The global pandemic news has been horrific and certainly an historic moment in domestic and worldwide shipping. For many businesses, the action was simple; hang the closed sign, furlough or layoff staff and wait for the approval to re-open. Or not, depending how long the virus will linger and continue to cause hundreds or thousands of deaths and rising numbers of cases. Make no mistake, there will be many businesses associated with our industry that will not return. The dam...ages will be far beyond bars and restaurant businesses. That thought alone will affect future new construction, markets and financial support. The flip side to the closures and unemployment numbers were the companies and business activities that were considered essential and frontline. As a country we saluted the tireless efforts of first responders and health care workers as heroic. That said there were unsung heroes also. See more

23.01.2022 A large bulk carrier has run aground on an Indian Ocean reef off Mauritius. The Panama-flagged MV Wakashio was underway from China to Brazil when it ran aground Saturday night off Pointe desny on Mauritius south-eastern coast during a voyage from China to Brazil. At 203,130 deadweight tonnes, the 300-meter MV Wakashio is classified as a large capesize bulk carrier. The vessel, however, is in ballast and not carrying any cargo. Reports say the local Coast Guard attempted to contact the ship before it ran aground.

22.01.2022 Australia is one of the only democracies in the world that has banned its citizens from leaving the country as a public health measure during the coronavirus pandemic. An Australian citizen or permanent resident is not permitted to travel outbound unless they apply online to Border Force and meet a set of strict exemption criteria. The ban which Prime Minister Scott Morrison has called "uncontroversial" was implemented on March 25 and is set to end on October 24, though i...s likely to be extended. Earlier this month, Finance Minister Matthias Cormann confirmed the Government was taking a "cautious approach" and could not yet "foresee the timetable by which international borders will be able to open". A Border Force spokesperson said the measures had "been successful in slowing the spread of coronavirus in Australia, and were implemented on the advice of the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee". The idea that citizenship carries with it an inherent right to leave the country of citizenship freely has not yet been tested in Australias law. So is there any question over the legality of the measures? How do they compare to rules in other countries? And what happens in circumstances like if you get a job offer overseas, want to leave long term, or are a dual citizen? See more

20.01.2022 As expected, deteriorating weather conditions in Mauritius have begun to hamper the efforts at the site of the bulk carrier Wakashio which has now broken in two. Rough seas have also been dispersing the oil while the strong surf has sent parts of the barriers deployed to catch the oil up on to the shore itself. At the same time, Panama spoke out about the accident defending its registry of the Wakashio. Salvage experts from Smit at the wreck along with the officials from Fran...ce and other countries and the International Maritime Organization are all working to assist the government of Mauritius. Smit advised that the rough seas made it too dangerous to work on the vessel. They had hoped to pump residential oil from the engine room. The Crisis Committee reported that there are approximately 30 cubic meters of mixed type of oil in the engine room. Ariel pictures of the wreck show oil leaking of the area of the engine room into the ocean. See more

20.01.2022 The Forever Chemicals: PFAS and the Maritime Industry - Article by PMLs Claire Strodder On 26 February 2020, lawyers for the Katherine residents affected by a PFAS (per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances) contamination reached an in-principle1 settlement agreement with the Department of Defence for a total settlement figure of $92.5 million. The Katherine PFAS Contamination Class Action (Class Action) arose as a result of the leaking of PFAS used in firefighting foams at a D...epartment of Defence base, which lead to the contamination of the land and waterways. While the Class Action is not directly associated with the maritime industry it is a clear signal that the problem of the forever chemicals, 2 PFAS, is not going anywhere fast. This article considers PFAS, the concerns with PFAS, PFAS and the maritime industry and finally some practical tips for organisations going forward. See more

20.01.2022 https://gcaptain.com/grounded-bulk-carrier-los-llanitos/The future is not looking very good for a bulk carrier that remains pinned against a rocky shoreline along the Pacific coast of Mexico five days after it ran aground during record-breaking Hurricane Patricia. The vessel, which still contains some 11,484 liters of oil and 489 cubic meters of diesel, is now showing obvious signs of catastrophic structural damage without so much as a single boom placed the vessel. Mexicos... environmental agency PROFEPA says it has been monitoring the wreck of the Mexican-flagged Los Llanitos since it ran aground Friday, but the responsible party has been unresponsive to requests to even place containment barriers around the wreck. The Mexican Navy is also involved in the response, but at this point it seems that no actual work has been done beyond monitoring the ship. See more

20.01.2022 German container shipping giant Hapag-Lloyd has confirmed new coronavirus cases among its crew. On 26 August, the company informed that two crew members on board the 8,600 TEU containership Sofia Express tested positive for COVID-19 while the vessel was at anchor at the Port of Vancouver, Canada. Local authorities were duly notified and the mariners were immediately isolated and brought to a quarantine facility ashore. We are hoping for a speedy recovery, the company said i...n a statement. All other crew members on the vessel are being monitored and tested as deemed appropriate by the authorities. The Post-Panamax boxship is deployed in Hapag-Lloyds Pacific North Loop 4 (PN4) service connecting Kobe, Xiamen, Kaohsiung, Nagoya, Tokyo, Tacoma and Vancouver. The vessels berthing in Vancouver was already delayed due to terminal congestion but both loading and discharging operations have been finalised. The situation involving the crew has further changed the ships schedule and Sofia Express is expected to continue its voyage shortly towards Pusan, according to the company. See more

18.01.2022 Queenslands Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young has revoked a coronavirus travel exemption for Melbourne multimillionaire Mark Simonds and six other people who cruised from Melbourne to the Gold Coast on a luxury yacht. The Lady Pamela which is owned by Mr Simonds left Melbourne on August 9 for a 15-day voyage. It stopped at several locations along the New South Wales coast, which is a coronavirus hotspot, before arriving at a marina at Coomera on the Gold Coast on Mond...ay morning. Mr Simonds is the executive director of development company Simonds Group and it is understood he was on the yacht with members of his family. Earlier on Tuesday, Dr Young said the family had been granted a travel exemption to enter Queensland, but by Tuesday night it had been revoked. In a statement, Queensland Health said new information had been provided which indicated the owner of the Lady Pamela obtained an exemption approval based on incomplete information. It said any attempt to bypass or manipulate Queenslands border directions was unacceptable. All seven people are now required to pay for 14 days quarantine in a government-approved hotel. Queensland and New South Wales police are investigating the matter. See more

17.01.2022 https://www.maritime-executive.com//warnings-of-increased- and the media have all been reviewing the events of the past few days seeking to understand the boarding of a merchant ship by Iranian forces as well as potential ramification for the shipping industry from the United States recent seizure of Iranian oil cargo. Sources believe it is becoming increasingly clear than the events were all interrelated raising the danger of further incidents for the shipping industry. O...n August 12, Iranian forces were seen boarding the Liberian-flag tanker Wila as it approached the anchorage in the UAE. Reports at the time linked the ship to Greek management and connected the raid to Irans shipments of oil. They highlighted the Greek shipping industrys participation in the shipments as well as later promises to honor U.S. economic sanctions in order to keep Greek vessels off the U.S.s blacklist. Shortly after the boarding, the U.S. reveals that it had been successful in seizing Iranian shipments of gasoline. Among the vessels transporting the gasoline, the Bering and Pandi, are owned and managed by the same company as the Wila. See more

16.01.2022 https://www.abc.net.au//mauritius-crash-owners-a/12539772 operator of a Japanese bulk carrier which ran aground off Mauritius in the Indian Ocean has apologised for a major oil spill which officials and environmentalists say is creating an ecological disaster. The MV Wakashio, operated by Mitsui OSK Lines, struck the reef on Mauritius south-east coast on July 25. Fuel started leaking from the cracked vessel on Thursday. "We apologise profusely and deeply for the great tro...uble we have caused," Akihiko Ono, executive vice-president of Mitsui OSK Lines said at a news conference in Tokyo. He added that the company would "do everything in their power to resolve the issue". At least 1,000 tonnes of oil is estimated to have leaked from the ship onto the waters surrounding Mauritius. Some 500 tonnes of oil have been salvaged from the ship, but there are still 2,500 tonnes remaining on the ship. Neither Mitsui OSK Lines nor Nagashiki Shipping, the ships owner, could confirm the cost of damages from the oil spill. See more

15.01.2022 Mauritius Prime Minister, Pravind Jugnauth, has declared a state of environmental emergency after Wakashio, a Japanese bulker that ran aground off the coast of the island nation, began spilling oil. Jugnauth said that the sinking of the vessel represents a danger for the people of Mauritius, according to the Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). As its starboard side bunker tank has been breached due to the bad weather and constant pounding over the pa...st few days, the Capesize bulk carrier is now leaking tonnes of diesel and bunker fuel into the Indian Ocean. At least 1,000 tonnes of fuel is believed to have leaked into the ocean so far. The Prime Minister warned that the damaged ship could split in half, leading to a large-scale ecological and economic disaster, Al Jazeera reported. Wakashio was carrying nearly 4,200 metric tonnes of fuel when it grounded on the reef of Point dEsny on 25 July, including low-sulphur fuel oil (3,894 MT), diesel (207 MT) and lubricant oil (90 MT). The ship is located near ecologically sensitive and important areas, including the Point dEsny Wetlands, Ile aux Aigrettes Nature Reserve, Blue Bay Marine Area and Mahebourg Fishing Reserves. 15.01.2022 https://www.offshore-energy.biz/seafarer-mental-health-cr/ seafarer community is in the midst of a mental health crisis due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the seafarers welfare and that of their families, the latest edition of the Seafarers Happiness Index (SHI) published by the Mission to Seafarers shows. The SHI is a barometer of the key issues facing those at sea today, and the latest report for the second quarter of 2020 reflects the responses from crew mem...bers globally against the backdrop of a global crew change crisis precipitated by COVID-19. The report said the continuing decline of happiness at sea, was largely due to the inability of seafarers to sign off and return home. Heavy workloads, virus fears and a perceived lack of COVID-19 precautions on board vessels are exacerbating the decline in satisfaction. Without immediate action, there are significant risks for the mental and physical wellbeing of crew and a growing risk to safety, the report warns. The latest survey, undertaken in association with the Shipowners Club and Wallem Group, analyses the experiences of seafarers across the global maritime industry between April and June 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, seafarer happiness has dropped from 6.30 in Q1 2020 to 6.18 in Q2 2020. See more

12.01.2022 At least 40 dolphins have mysteriously died in an area of Mauritius affected by an oil spill from a Japanese ship, officials and witnesses said on Friday, as witnesses described the deaths of one mother dolphin and her baby. Environmentalists have demanded an investigation into whether the dolphins were killed as a result of the spill from a Japanese ship, which was scuttled on Monday after running aground in July and leaking oil. The death toll may rise: fisherman Yasfeer He...enaye said he saw between 25 and 30 apparently dead dolphins floating in the lagoon on Friday morning, among scores of the animals that fishermen were trying to herd away from the pollution. There was a mother and her baby, he said. He was very tired, he didnt swim well. But the mum stayed alongside him, she didnt leave her baby to go with the group. All the way she stayed with him. She was trying to protect him. He filmed as the calf wallowed on its side and died in front of them, floating on the waves. Heenaye, his boat running low on fuel, motioned to Reuben Pillay, who tracked the mother dolphin. She initially looked normal, he said. But in a few minutes she went on her side, one fin in the water, and one out of the water and then she started flapping her tail really really rapidly, said Pillay, a professional drone operator and environmentalist who is providing video to Reuters. She swam in circles in front of the boat, she moved her tail very violently and after about five minutes she just stopped moving, and she sunk We heard cries, I thought it was a woman on the boat but they told me, no it was the dolphin. The mother dolphin stopped moving and eventually slowly sank, tail first, beneath the waves. The dead baby floated on the surface. We didnt know what to do. It was heartwrenching, Pillay said. Earlier in the day, Jasvin Sok Appadu from the Mauritius fisheries ministry told Reuters that 38 carcasses had washed up on the beaches so far. Autopsy results on 25 dolphins that washed ashore Wednesday and Thursday are expected in the coming days, he said. See more

12.01.2022 A live export ship carrying 5,800 head of cattle and 43 crew members, including two Australians, is missing in waters off south-western Japan. Japans coast guard has told the ABC the freighter was carrying the crew including two Australians, two New Zealanders and 39 Filipinos when it disappeared on Wednesday. The Australian and New Zealand foreign ministries are providing consular assistance. "Owing to our privacy obligations we are unable to provide further comment," a Dep...artment of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson said in a statement. Strong winds and torrential rain from Typhoon Maysak are hampering rescue efforts. The ship sent out a distress signal and Japans Coast Guard and Maritime Self Defence Force began searching the waters. Authorities last night found one lifeboat and a Filipino crew member wearing a life vest drifting in the waters. The coast guard said his condition is not life threatening. Officials have yet to locate the ship but the search is continuing. The ship left New Zealand on August 14 with 5,867 cattle on board and was due to arrive at the Port of Jingtang in Tangshan, China the next Friday. The Panamanian-registered vessel called Gulf Livestock 1, which sent the distress call from somewhere to the west of Amami Oshima Island, was carrying 5,867 cattle, according to New Zealands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. 12.01.2022 The leader of Australias New South Wales state apologized on Monday for failing to stop people carrying the novel coronavirus from disembarking from a cruise ship in Sydney in March, triggering what was at the time Australias worst outbreak. The apology from NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian for her governments poor handling of the outbreak aboard the Ruby Princess came as the number of deaths from a second wave of infection in Victoria state hit a record 25. Australia has re...ported 23,500 COVID-19 cases and 421 deaths, far fewer than many other developed nations, but missteps in the handling of the Ruby Princess and possibly also with hotel quarantine in Victoria have proven costly. The lessons werent learnt soon enough and again I apologise unreservedly on behalf all of those individuals and agencies who made those mistakes, Berejiklian told reporters in Sydney. See more

07.01.2022 The Philippine Coast Guard will continue to pursue criminal charges against the owners of MV Vienna Wood, a Hong Kong-flagged bulk carrier, which was involved in a deadly collision with a fishing vessel in June southwest of Manila. The decision is being announced on the back of settlement reached between the owners of the ship, Greece-based Nomikos Transworld Maritime with the families of missing fishermen from the sunken FV Liberty 5 fishing vessel, and its owner Irma Fishin...g and Trading Inc. A total of 14 people, 12 fishermen and two passengers aboard the fishing vessel went missing following the collision and have not been found. Following the incident, the coast guard filed a motion to prevent the 20 crew members of the vessel from leaving the Philippine waters under the charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and damage to property. A P 40-million settlement to Irma Fishing and Trading Inc. and P1 million each for families of the missing fishermen were initially agreed upon by both owners. As disclosed, the initial settlement amount was increased by the owner of the ship, the details of which have not been disclosed. Based on the latest AIS data from Marine Traffic, the ship, which has been deemed unseaworthy due to damage to its stern, remains at anchor in Batangas Bay. See more

06.01.2022 Prime Minister Scott Morrison has recommended the Queen posthumously award World War II hero Edward Teddy Sheean a Victoria Cross. Tasmanian Sheean, an 18-year-old with less than two years at sea, was an Ordinary Seaman on the minesweeper HMAS Armidale when it came under heavy attack from Japanese aircraft off the coast of what is now Timor-Leste in 1942. Mr Morrison ordered an expert panel re-examine the case for Sheean receiving Australias highest military honour after e...arlier attempts had failed to recommend he receive a Victoria Cross. Sheean is recorded as helping launch life rafts before returning to his anti-aircraft gun to fire at enemy aircraft that were strafing his shipmates as they floundered in the water, despite the order having been given to abandon ship. Witness accounts from the day have him firing as the ship sank. He was never seen again. Mr Morrison said he had accepted the findings of the expert panel. "That there is compelling new evidence in support of higher recognition for Sheean, that Sheean was done a substantial injustice in consideration of his actions in the original decision-making period in 1942 to 1943," he said. 06.01.2022 One of the last survivors of D-Day is riding high on a beach for the first time since June 1944. Landing Craft (Tank) 7074 made her final journey by sea in the small hours of Monday morning and is ready to be installed as the main attraction at the D-Day Story museum in Southsea, UK. The ship is the last of 800 similar vessels which delivered men, armor and material to the shores of Normandy in June 1944, restored to how she appeared during that fateful summer in the same she...d where sections of the UKs new aircraft carriers were built. It took two attempts to get the 194-foot vessel, loaded on to a barge, from the naval base to her new home; summer storms thwarted the operation on Saturday night, but the seas and wind had calmed sufficiently for a second go at a beach landing, accomplished Monday at 0350 hours. From there its a road journey to the waterfront museum where shell take pride of place. Restoration of the 300-tonne craft, carried out by the National Museum of the Royal Navy and Portsmouth City Council, was slowed by a couple of months by the pandemic and the move carried out in secret at night to prevent large crowds gathering to watch the spectacle. 05.01.2022 A Feedermax container vessel accidentally rammed into a pier at Manila North Harbor port in the early morning hours of 10 August 2020, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said. The 5,593 GT ship, Ocean Abundance, damaged approximately five to ten metres of Pier 2. It also sustained damages to the bow. As informed, the vessel experienced an engine issue wherein it failed to reverse properly, causing it to allide with the pier. According to the PCG, an initial report revealed that despite the damages to the vessels bow and the pier, there were no signs of an oil spill in the area. Personnel of the Coast Guard Sub-station North Harbor continue to monitor the incident.

05.01.2022 https://www.maritime-executive.com//42-believed-lost-with-s Coast Guard confirmed that it had saved one crew member from the livestock carrier Gulf Livestock 1 while also reported that its search and rescue teams had failed to find any other survivors. The vessel is confirmed lost likely claiming the lives of 42 seafarers. According to the Japanese authorities, they spotted the one individual in the water in a life jacket and he waved to their aircraft surveying the area. ...He was later plucked from the ocean and identified as a 45-year-old Filipino, Sareno Edvardo, who was the chief officer aboard the livestock carrier. He was reported to be in good condition in a Japanese hospital. The Japan Coast Guard relayed the details of the loss of the ship based on its interview with the sole survivor. The ship was sailing in the East China Sea encountering heavy weather associated with Typhoon Maysak. At 2 a.m. on September 2, around the time the vessel issued its distress call, the storm was reported to be a category 3 storm with winds at 115 mph. The survivor told the coast guard that the ship had lost power and the waves were washing over the deck after the power went off. The ship had begun to list and they were ordered to put on life jackets. He had ended up going overboard. The Gulf Livestock 1 ultimately capsized and sunk the survivor reported. He was in the ocean for 24-hours during the storm and said that he did not see any other survivors. The Japan Coast Guard continued to search the area both by land and sea. While conditions were improving after the typhoon went ashore in Korea, the coast guard has not reported finding any other material from the ship. Early reports indicated that they might have spotted a life raft from the ship but it was empty. Th search efforts, however, are also being hampered by a second storm, Typhoon Haishen which is expected to follow a similar track. Authorities in Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines have all been responding to the loss of the ship as each nation is reported to have had crew members on board. See more

04.01.2022 On Monday, a ferry rescued a young girl who was adrift on an inflatable pool toy in the Gulf of Patras, off Antirrio, Greece. The three-year-old child was playing in the water with her father at a beach when the inflatable drifted away with the wind and current. Bystanders made an attempt to rescue her but were unable to catch up, and they called the local harbormaster for help. Maritime officials put out a call to nearby vessels, and it was answered by the ro/pax ferry Salam...inomachos, which serves the popular route between Antirrio and Rio. The ferry pulled slowly alongside the inflatable and lowered her bow ramp, and the crew pulled the child and the toy on board without harm. The ferrys master, Capt. Grigoris Karnesis, told local media that he was grateful for the calm surface conditions, which made the rescue easier. 02.01.2022 Greenpeace activists from Germany have launched a protest in the North Sea to call out Shells plans to abandon an estimated 11,000 tonnes of oil in the sea. According to the environmental groups statement from Wednesday, Greenpeace ship Esperanza approached the 500m exclusion zone of Shells platforms in the Brent oil field, off the Shetland Islands, with protestors on board waving banners calling on Shell to clean up its mess. Greenpeace said that todays protest also high...lights how Shell is failing to take responsibility for its harmful impact on the environment. Dr Christian Bussau, Greenpeace Germany marine biologist, said: Shell still wants to cheaply dismantle the platforms, and the UK government is colluding with them to allow it. Shells profit-before-people business model is blocking an opportunity to create jobs to dispose of the 11,000 tonnes of oil and parts of the platform that must be removed in an environmentally friendly manner. Shell must urgently get out of the dirty oil and gas industry and pivot its business to renewable energy. Greenpeace claims that, according to Shells decommissioning proposals, it will leave behind the remains of four platforms in the Brent oil field. Shell estimates three of those platforms contain 640,000 cubic metres of oily water and 40,000 cubic metres of oily sediment with a total content of more than 11,000 tonnes of oil. See more
