25.01.2022 Australia’s East Coast shark culling programs indiscriminately catch marine animals including dolphins, turtles, rays and even whales. This year in Queensland a...lone, six whales were caught by the state’s shark control program. As whales make their way back to the waters of the Antarctic, we urgently need the #NetsOutNow. Help spread the word by sharing this video and if you haven’t already, email the QLD Fisheries Minister Mark Furner asking for a transition to modern, non-lethal technologies https://bit.ly/3kCBnrb #OpApexHarmony

23.01.2022 Our research collaboration with Whales and Climate was featured in a Maui Time Weekly article, linked below. Check it out!

19.01.2022 It is that time of year when moms and calves are in Hervey Bay, Australia, and preparing to head south to their feeding grounds in Antartica. #DidYouKnow that moms and calves are typically the last to leave the breeding grounds, as it allows calves more time to nurse and gain energy before making the approximately 5,000-kilometer journey south? You can learn more about the temporal and spatial use of humpback whales in Hervey Bay in a recent publication here: https://fh-site...s.imgix.net//Stack-et-al.-2019-Distribution Visit our website to learn more about Pacific Whale Foundation's research and ways to help support our work: https://www.pacificwhale.org/research/australia/ Research conducted opportunistically aboard PWF Eco-Adventures Australia's commercial vessel. Whales were not approached closer than 100 meters, per Australian regulations

19.01.2022 The Queensland government is in the process of updating their management plan for the Great Sandy Marine Park, and our Research and Conservation Department teams are working closely together with other regional experts to provide scientific data. We are providing data on where whales and dolphins are found within the Park boundaries, as well as making recommendations to help guide the government’s zoning plan. As this plan is only updated every 10 years, we are honored to provide our data to help guide future management actions and provide better protections for whales and dolphins in this important habitat! Note: Research photos are gathered under appropriate permits and permissions from Great Sandy Marine Park and Queensland government.

18.01.2022 Today marks the launch of Whales and Climate, the world’s first international research project aimed to establish an understanding of how changing ocean conditions influence the recovery of whale populations in the Southern Hemisphere. We are pleased to announce that our PWF researchers are a part of the program and have contributed 15 years of whale observational data from 3 locations along the East Australia migratory pathway. More than 25 researchers from five countries... are a part of the five-year project. An international team of researchers from six countries plan to create a model for whale distributions under future climate change scenarios, and to investigate changes influencing population status and conservation of humpback whales. 12.01.2022 Pacific Whale Foundation has always had a close connection with Migaloo. An approach was made by our research team to the local Indigenous mob in 1992 to name this unique Humpback - head of Research at this time, Dr Paul Forestell, recalls the period: "In September of 1992 I observed and photographed an all-white humpback whale in Hervey Bay - from the Pacific Whale Foundation research boat one day, and during an aerial survey flight the next. Curious as to what such a unique... sighting might mean to the local aboriginal community, I made some inquiries about a possible name for the whale. I was told that Nai Nai Bird, a Butchalla elder of the Wonamutta clan, suggested Migaloo (roughly translated as white fella). I later learned that my friend Paul Hodda (President of the Australia Whale Conservation Society) had observed the same whale in 1991 during shore-based whale census observations at Byron Bay. Hodda designated the whale H2. Dr. Trish Franklin, a well-known humpback whale researcher (and also a good friend), named the whale Lotus after observing him in 1992 and 1993. Over time, the name Migaloo circulated most widely, and it stuck. The beautiful white humpback whale has become an international celebrity because of his unique colouration, but for me it has been most inspiring to learn about the cultural connections between Migaloo and his family and aboriginal communities." #historylesson #Migaloo #visitfrasercoast See more

12.01.2022 Although the humpback whales we study in Hervey Bay, Australia are now migrating south towards their feeding grounds in Antarctica, there are other marine mammals that call this area home all year round. Pacific Whale Foundation researchers also collect data on resident populations of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins and Australian humpback dolphins. These two species can be identified by their colouration and dorsal fin shapes; Australian humpback dolphins have low elongated dorsal fins and are lighter in colour, while Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins have characteristically triangular dorsal fins and are darker in colour. Our researchers will use photo-ID data of individual dolphins in order to learn more about these understudied local populations.

09.01.2022 Inspiring and educating our youth to become the ocean protectors of tomorrow has been a driving force behind Pacific Whale Foundation (PWF) for 40 years, propel...ling the nonprofit organization to the pinnacle of ocean and marine wildlife conservation. In honor of this significant milestone and to raise much-needed funds for PWF's Education, Research and Conservation programs, we invite Members, donors and friends to celebrate with us at our 40th Anniversary Virtual Gala and corresponding online auction taking place Oct. 29 through Nov. 9.

07.01.2022 Happy Interntional Coastal Cleanup Day! International Coastal Cleanup Day (ICCD) is an annual opportunity in which communities in over 100 countries come together to remove debris from their local coastal environments. Most of this debris is plastic. Join PWF representitives at Sunday by the Sea on the Seafront Oval from 10am to 3pm in ridding our coastlines of plastic and other debris that can have disastrous consequences for marine life great and small. PWF will provide a... free bag and gloves for every participant. This is a COVID safe event where mask will be provided but are not mandatory. https://www.facebook.com/events/seafront-oval/sunday-by-the-sea/944003489426865/ Visit Fraser Coast Visit Queensland, Australia Pacific Whale Foundation #ICCD
