20.01.2022 Fairly often i get asked what a good deal is on a notebook or PC, well I've just found one! Lenovo have their Thinkpad E840 on special, down form ~$1500 to $874.03 Machine is an i5-8250U, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD with a 14" FullHD display. Plenty of machines can be had for under $1k, but not usually this well specced or of this build quality.... As much as the Thinkpads are alright, steer clear of the Ideapad range, they're not built to the same standard. I have no association with Lenovo or this offer, just sharing. Unusual for Lenovo, the upgrade to 16GB of ram is actually reasonably priced, as well as the backlit keyboard option and fingerprint reader. Other upgrades aren't too exciting. Also beware of some low cost machines, build quality on notebooks is getting pretty poor these days. My favourite would be the Lenovo Thinkpads, my #1 avoid machines are Acer (poor build, lots of bloatware). Feel free to send me a message if you'd like some advice.

11.01.2022 Looking for a notebook PC? Last posted a link to a good value machine in Feb, have now come across another machine that looks to be great bang for buck. Disclaimer - i have no ties with Oz Bargain or Lenovo, just pointing out a good deal for any of my customers that are in the market for a new machine. Here is it - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/376378... Decent combo of CPU, RAM, SSD (fast new type of hard disk) and graphics. One of the biggest issues in finding a machine is getting one for a reasonable price where *ALL* of the specs tick the right boxes. Add to that you might find a nice machine, but how good is the physical build quality? How long will the hinges last? Lenovo's Thinkpad range is typically of a more sturdy build quality than the Idea pad range, and often superior than what other brands have on offer. Recommended upgrades for this are the fingerprint reader @ $22 and 3 years on-site + premier support @ $189 The 16GB (8+8GB) RAM option is also reasonably priced, but only useful for those that will be pushing the machine hard. All up with recommended options just under $1300 for a well specced, well made machine with 3 years warranty that includes Lenovo coming to YOU for any repairs. Ultra Slim form factor i5-4440 3.1GHz 8G DDR3 RAM NEW 240G SSD Win10 (Pro?) $238.50 delivered Again, not a hot rod, but a very well rounded and capable machine for the money. The SSD will make boot and app launching pretty much as snappy as any current gen machine, and faster than cheap current gen machines that still rely on a mechanical hard disk. In my opinion anyone shopping for a machine in 2019 should not touch anything without an SSD. Boot and app launch times rely more so on how fast the storage system is than the CPU. Each subsystem of a PC is important, don't get stuck in the layman's trap of going for a fancy CPU 'model number' and end up having the rest of your machine be rubbish.
