10.02.2022 Three perfect weeks of paddling on the LachlanA not so quick trip report for anyone interested in paddling the flatwater sections of the river. There are still currently good flows along many sections of the lower river.

05.02.2022 This guide seems pretty good for lots of different waters and Rec paddles.

26.01.2022 Dear marine park stakeholder, As you may be aware the NSW Government has recently released a draft Management Plan for the NSW Mainland Marine Park Network (2021-2031) to seek stakeholder and community input into the future of the management of our five mainland marine parks along the NSW coast. A community webinar was held on Tuesday 21 December to provide information on the draft management plan and support the public consultation process. The webinar provided participants ...an opportunity to hear about the development of the draft plan and the consultation process, and included an open Q&A session. The slides from this webinar are now published on the website www.marine.nsw.gov.au/yoursay. We received a large number of questions during the first webinar and are currently preparing responses. Responses to questions from the Q&A will be published online at the above website in the New Year and we will let you know when this occurs. A second community webinar will be held on Wednesday 19th January at 6-7pm. The webinar will include the same slides presented in the first webinar including information on: The development of the draft management plan The consultation process and how you can submit your comments and feedback What the next steps are following the consultation An opportunity to ask questions about the plan and consultation process To register your interest in attending the webinar please click the link here and register your details. After registration, you will be sent an email with the details for accessing the webinar. The draft Plan is currently available to view on the consultation website www.marine.nsw.gov.au/yoursay. The website includes videos, fact sheets, stakeholder-specific information, and frequently asked questions. Comments on the draft plan can be submitted through the online survey or by uploading written submissions. Our marine parks are highly valued by stakeholders and the entire community. Your feedback on the draft plan is important to ensure the effective management of marine parks and the role they play in conserving biodiversity as well as providing opportunities for recreational and commercial pursuits, scientific research, livelihoods and culture. Public consultation on the draft plan closes 31 January 2022.

24.01.2022 Around 2.40pm today emergency services responded to an incident after a lady slipped trapping her leg in a pier at Macquarie Park Windsor. With the assistance of the SES the lady had her leg released a short time later. Thankfully the lady was uninjured.

24.01.2022 Want to see less plastic in our waterways? NSW govt is seeking public feedback on its plastics plan - an opportunity to phase out single-use plastics, so have your say now! You can do a short survey (5 mins), long survey (20 mins) or a public submission. Boomerang Alliance have made it super easy if you click the link below, lots of good info there and they've even made videos of people reading out the plastic plan so you can listen instead of read Let's cleanup our waterways, make them better for

24.01.2022 This afternoon our Southern NSW aircraft #Lifesaver23 was tasked south of Eden on the NSW Far South Coast after a vessel set off an emergency beacon. The crew l...ocated the yacht that had lost its engine and was taking on water. They stayed on scene to help guide Marine Area Command - NSW Police Force to the vessel. A great example of safety and emergency equipment saving lives! See more

24.01.2022 Following the rainfall in recent days, Warragamba Dam is currently close to full capacity. From approximately 10.00am, Tuesday 5th January 2021, WaterNSW will commence operations to lower the water level to 1m below full supply level. Discharge should continue at a rate of 3.5GL/day for up to two weeks, dependant on rain. This procedure is known as a drawdown and is a standard process that allows WaterNSW to carry out essential works at the dam. River users may notice a small... increase in river heights over this period. https://www.waternsw.com.au/supply/ewn

23.01.2022 Some rivers are up but do stay safe!! Most are still rising, plus bush-fire damage making many too risky. Feel free to share any paddling trips and pics from the last few weeks of rain though (in the comments) - we'd love to hear :) NB update from Sandy since his post is that NPWS do not want people paddling Glenbrook Gorge at all.

22.01.2022 Another great trail. Let’s make sure it’s on the Waterways Guide and Paddle Safe App.

22.01.2022 Vale Basil a true gentleman, great paddler and friend. Basil was part of that generation that started the tradition of paddlers writing up trip guides so others could plan a safe paddling experience. Basil once told me that long with others in The Rivers Canoe Club he paddled the Colo Gorge from Glen Davis to Upper Colo after the Leyland Brothers did their TV show on the trip. The police were doing lots of rescues so the club did the trips so they could put a map up in the Glen Davis to show people it was more than just a weekend paddle. The report also contributed to the first Guide to Paddling New South Wales Rivers.

22.01.2022 Know a school keen to kayak? Paddle Australia has funding for a fun and safe school kayaking program in rural and remote areas. Requires someone with their PNSW Guide/Instructor/Paddling Supervisor/Coach qual to run it for the school. Program funded for 4X1 hour sessions of "Paddle Ball" or "Paddle Discovery". Email [email protected] for more info. Great opportunity to get schools into kayaking.

22.01.2022 Way to go Roddy... great profile, doing the club proud! More generally, it's fantastic to see the Changemaker program kicking off this weekend :)

19.01.2022 Its time!! Register now if you live in a Sydney Region that encompasses Lake Parramatta.

18.01.2022 Twilight paddle on the Campaspe River. It was great to get out on the Campaspe while it was still high. High water in the Murray from water that is being transf...erred to South Australia for irrigation had backed up the Campaspe so that almost all of the snags were covered. We set off in daylight. Alone on the water, our wake were the only disturbances to the water surface. Despite being in town we heard little from the surrounding streets. Every now and then lighting from houses high on the riverbank, and footbridges across the river shone down into the water, creating pathways of light. Snags appeared as silloettes, or appeared out of the darkness in the warm light of our torches. We paddled beneath roosting flocks of cockatoos, alongside extended duckling families rushing with strategic camouflage breaks up the bank and scared the odd sleeping bird. On our way back it was rather dark. We paddled as a line, the first boat finding its way and the others following. We all had a few small bumps but all in all it was fun... and something different, right in the middle of our own home town. See more

18.01.2022 Stay safe and learn how to look after yourself and fellow paddlers.

18.01.2022 Help clean-up our waterways!

16.01.2022 The C word... You're probably sick of hearing about it, but thought we better give an update, as you may be wondering, is paddling still allowed at the moment? YES! It is exercise, but you still need to: maintain social distancing go alone or with maximum one other person don't go if sick - self isolate... N.B. Social distancing applied to paddling means: no doubles no car shuttles (unless its with someone you live with anyway). (Thanks to PaddleNSW who advocated to Sports Australia and the Minister for Sport that paddling be a permittable form of exercise.) The lockdown and social distancing rules can be found here https://preview.nsw.gov.au//what-you-can-and-cant-do-under And Paddle Australia has a Covid-19 page here https://paddle.org.au/coronavirus-covid-19-advice-links/ Probably goes without saying, but all PaddleNSW events and those of our affiliated clubs and member associations have ceased till further notice. We are planning some online educational events though, so stay tuned! Take care everyone!! And remember, it's normal under these circumstances to be angry, frustrated, anxious, cry or be happy (eg. at getting a break), and to bounce your way around them all like those super bouncy balls from the 80s (anyone remember them?) in a courtyard. So don't feel ashamed. It's a lot of change, and challenging times. There's a heap of good services out there to use if you need - Beyond Blue (1300 224 636), Lifeline (13 11 14), Men's Helpline (1300 78 99 78) and more, and most have online chat options too. And of course look out for one another Hope to see you on the water when coronacrisis is over

15.01.2022 A really excellent article by Travis at Paddle & Portage..well worth a read :) and great inspiration to get out canoeing shortly.

15.01.2022 Ellie Goulding just made plastics pollution & clean-up a national focus in the UK with this version of Joni Mitchell’s ‘River’ clip hitting No. 1 single for the... last week of 2019 in the UK. The track’s clip sees Goulding and her friends gathering litter and discarded plastic on the beaches of Dungeness, and using it to make a zero-waste Christmas tree. Shooting the video was "a timely reminder that every single piece of plastic ever made is still on this planet," the star said in a statement. "It's a material that will last for hundreds of years so we need to have a plan. We wanted to show something different and to incorporate a different type of Christmas message while creating something reusable and beautiful." See more

14.01.2022 Following the rainfall in recent weeks Warragamba Dam is currently close to full capacity. Based on predicted rainfall Warragamba Dam is unlikely to spill. For the coming weeks WaterNSW is operating the gates manually to lower the water level to just below full supply. This procedure is known as a drawdown and is a standard process that protects the dam's flood gates by preventing them from repeatedly opening and closing automatically as a result of the dam being very close to full capacity. This can happen from slight changes in water levels or from waves in the lake. River users may notice a small increase in river heights over this period.

12.01.2022 These are the 24 hour BOM radar images from http://www.bom.gov.au/products/national_radar_sat.loop.shtml if you select one of the radars with black diamond icon and the select the 24 hou image you can scroll back over 7 days. i also tick the show catchment option on the bottom right of the screen. The last image is of the river levels tab on the Paddle Safe app.

12.01.2022 This morning a male was washed off his kayak at Nelson Head, Port Stephens in strong currents, resulting in him being separated from his kayak and pushed into t...he bay. A bystander saw the male struggling in the water and was able to assist, pulling the man back to safety. The male was wearing a lifejacket at the time. . This is a timely reminder to paddle safe, wear a lifejacket and do not take unnecessary risks on the water. . https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au//sa/campaigns/paddle-smart.html See more

10.01.2022 If you're in a club, here's a great opportunity to upskill your members (e.g. rescue courses, basic skills, river skills & safety) or train more members to become guides/instructors/coaches. Contact us for quotes on PNSW course costs. The grant is also for events, facilities etc - so get those ideas pumping

10.01.2022 If you see a fish kill, report it! With the weather heating up and water levels low, lots of fish kills are expected, especially in the Murray Darling Basin. Reporting helps know what's been lost and what remains, and plan for the future.

10.01.2022 For all recreational paddlers. Come try your skill on the Myall River and have some fun.

09.01.2022 Changes to Crown reserve management in Snowy Monaro Snowy Monaro Regional Council is encouraging the community to have their say on the future management of the region’s Crown Reserves. Under the Crown Land Management Act 2016, the responsibility for the management of an additional 70 Crown Reserves has been handed to Council, as the Crown Reserve Manager.... The Crown Land Management Act 2016 came into effect on 1 July 2018. The Act changes the management of Crown Reserves, with councils now managing Crown Reserves as public land under the Local Government Act 1993. Crown Reserves classified as ‘community land’ will be governed by Plans of Management (PoMs) made under the Local Government Act 1993. Council has appointed SLR Consulting to undertake the PoMs. Plans of Management set out objectives and performance targets for community land and provide for active land management and use, including the issuing of tenures over the land. Council, in collaboration with SLR Consulting, are seeking feedback from users and stakeholders of the Crown Reserves to better understand their use and future management objectives. A list of the relevant reserves is available at Your Say Snowy Monaro or at any Council office and library. The list contains information on the Crown endorsed categorisation, preliminary use designation and management objectives. The community can provide feedback online through Your Say Snowy Monaro, in writing to Council, or by attending a drop-in session at the following locations and times. Cooma office committee room: Tuesday 10 November from 2 pm to 4 pm. Bombala office chambers room: Wednesday 11 November from 10 am to 12 pm. Jindabyne Memorial Hall supper room: Wednesday 11 November from 2 pm to 4 pm. Due to COVID 19 restrictions, attendees are requested make a reservation to attend these sessions. Please call Lyn Bottrill on 1300 345 345 to book a time slot. The feedback period closes Tuesday 24 November 2020.

08.01.2022 Weather Forecasting for you!!!

08.01.2022 Fabulous pics of a fabulous river.

07.01.2022 Landholders and river users, including pumpers, on the Mitta Mitta River are advised to take into account the forecast releases of water from Dartmouth Dam and make any necessary adjustment to their river activities. Bulk transfer of water from Dartmouth to Hume will continue in July. Based on current system conditions and forecasts, MDBA river operations plan to target a transfer volume of up to 180 GL for the month. Releases will continue to be made in a series of pulsed re...leases at a gradually higher rate, reaching a peak up to 7,000 ML/day towards the end of the month. For June, peak releases were near 5,000 ML/day. These variable releases aim to transfer appropriate volumes to Hume, whilst minimising erosion along the Mitta Mitta River. Varied releases are environmentally preferable to maintaining steady flows and better align with the natural variability of the lower Mitta Mitta River. Without rainfall, river heights at Tallandoon are expected to vary below 3.0 m (~7,200 ML/day), below channel capacity. https://www.mdba.gov.au/mitta-mitta-flow-advice-28-june-2019

07.01.2022 Ok, so, a few of us couldn’t help but duck up to the Gwydir to paddle on the Northern Fish Flow on the release from Copeton Dam (central north NSW). After pouring over satellite imagery and maps, we chose a section below the Grade 4 bit, based on less gradient (more to our capabilities!) and hopefully not as much water required, and public access (ish), and still in the beautiful mountains. Put in at Horse Stealers Gully. Encountered several tea tree thickets that required portaging, but some had paddleable bits (in between the dragging, wading, climbing, swearing) fun little rapids and some dodging and weaving around tea trees. Interspersed with beautiful pools. Neat little adventure :) Addition to the Waterways Guide coming soon!

07.01.2022 Thanks Travis, all the best for a return of yours and our beautiful rivers and favourite paddles in Kangaroo Valley.

03.01.2022 Hi paddlers! WARNING! A tree has been chopped across the Big River in Victoria just after the pines campground. It's hidden around a blind corner so I suggest not paddling past the pines, or to portage this section. (In these photos the river is at 1.3m)

03.01.2022 Yeeeah. Rain forecast. Although as this BOM video points out, it could have some negative consequences. Keep your eye on water levels for paddle opportunities: www.waterwaysguide.org.au https://youtu.be/DRyOOyFknJ0

03.01.2022 If you thought its been dry, you're damn right. End of water-year rainfall summaries show way below average rainfalls for the last two years, and record-breaking high temperatures. View full report of Murray-Darling Water here https://www.mdba.gov.au/river-information/weekly-reports see June 5 report.

03.01.2022 OK who was it?

02.01.2022 Here is another good bushfire donation campaign: Many people will have stayed at Nymboida Canoe and Camping Centre whilst paddling the Nymboida or have participated in one of their whitewater courses. They had their entire fleet of boats and equipment wiped out in the recent fires. While they were insured, they still face expenses to get up and running again. And they are about much more than just paddling and camping - they are a largely volunteer-run hub of the Nymboida community, and we're sure a deep loss is felt but they are looking to come back bigger and stronger!

02.01.2022 I recently saw this post from ABC and it made me think i wonder how many photos paddlers could put together to show their river now in this relentless drought and in the good times

02.01.2022 Want to paddle, navigate, and choose your own adventure? NSW Rogaining is organising their first paddlegaine - a navigational sport where participants plan their own route to visit as many checkpoints as they can on a map in a set time period (usually on foot - a rogaine, but in this instance, its mostly by kayak/canoe/SUP - a paddlegaine). Set on the quiet bays and tributary creeks of Lake Macquarie, this event also has two transition checkpoints where you can dock your vessel and head off on foot into the local urban and bushland areas to collect land-based checkpoints. A fun mix of 'paddle and promenade'! More info and registration at https://nswrogaining.org/wpblog/2109-paddlegaine/
