24.01.2022 The Eltham Lower Park back oval will be closed until at least 1 September for urgent repair works and maintenance. Council prioritises maintaining the good condition of its ovals to maximise the community’s enjoyment of these facilities. We apologise for any inconvenience. 21.01.2022 This bookplate was recently found in a book of wildflowers; a dedication in 1977 to Nell from Geo (George?). Any wild things from the 70s who may know who Nell and Geo are?
19.01.2022 The rain was unable to deter our Rotarians today as we collected donations of cans left out after our 'Can Drive' last week. Until they are counted we estimate... somewhere between 3000 - 4000 cans were donated. We are humbled by this generosity and say a very big Thank You to those household's who donated. Families in desperate need at this time will be very grateful. See more

Download the digital service booklet https://go.vic.gov.au/nwPHs6 Each year on 29 September, we pause to remember fallen police employees who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The service will remember and honour the lives the 23 Victoria Police officers, Protective Services Officers, Police Custody Officers, Victorian Public Service staff and Police Chaplains who died between 29 September 2019 and 29 September 2020. This includes Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Senior Constable Kevin King, Constable Josh Prestney and Constable Glen Humphris who were tragically killed in the line of duty on the Eastern Freeway in Kew on 22 April 2020. 11.01.2022 A couple of days ago, I received a phone call regarding a little boy who lives in our local area. Without going into any detail, I heard 2 things about Rafael, ...who is four and a half, he loves Emergency Service vehicles, and the other thing I learned, is that Rafael is doing it pretty tough at the moment, and really, that was all we needed to hear. A couple of quick phone calls to our local mates, and a plan was hatched. So today, Raf and his Dad Rob and little sister Scarlett, arrived at the Chelsea SES HQ, to find not only SES trucks ready to be explored, but also an Edithvale CFA Fire engine, a Coast Guard vessel and truck and members from Chelsea Police, Moorabbin Highway Patrol, the Police Critical Incident Response Team from the city, the Chelsea Police all-terrain vehicle and an amazing low level fly over by the Police Air Wing, who knew that the Police Helicopter had a siren; and all on hand to try to lift Raf’s spirits for just an hour or so, and hopefully, provide a smile and some fun memories for a great and brave little boy. We also thought it would be good for him to take a few memories home with him including a Paddy Platypus SES Bear, a Chelsea SES Rescue Truck lunch box, a mini Chainsaw, and an official SES cap and an SES bear for Scarlett. A CFA Bear, and Fireman’s Helmet, and a VICPOL, Constable T Bear and Police cap. Raf was also made an honorary Police member at Chelsea, including getting his Sergeants stripes. After a ride in the Highway Patrol car and the Police all terrain vehicle, with lights flashing and sirens blaring, and getting to know the guys and girls, it was time for pictures, to make sure that no memories of the day went by without being covered. I want to thank the Chelsea SES members, Edithvale CFA members, Carrum Coast Guard members, and VICPOL members from Chelsea Police Station, the city and the air wing, who made the day possible. Also, a massive special thank you to Caitlan Milner, the owner of Sundaebake, for donating stacks of fabulous cupcakes for everyone on the day, including a special presentation pack for Rob and Raf to take home to share with the rest of the family. We truly hope you had fun Raf. You have all of the attributes of a good volunteer, you are tough, you are brave, and you have a wonderful heart. Thank you for visiting with us today, and please feel free to come back anytime you like. It's a big post, but you will not be sorry when you see this young man's happy face! Special big thank you to Kristy, the young lady whose phone call started it all. #WeWorkAsOne See more
11.01.2022 Some thoughts from Nan Oates, our oldest and wisest member. The Leave Early message Following the Black Saturday fires of February 2009, the dominant fire aware...ness message adopted by the CFA was this simple phrase of Leave Early, this being the best approach to surviving a bushfire. Although a simple and clear message, it is far from a simple activity. It involves serious research, planning, family involvement and decision making. Yet the majority approach still seems to fall back on to ‘we will wait and see and then decide. But the danger of this approach is that if nearly everyone decides to do this at the same time in the same locality, the roads out would be choked up completely and make it difficult for emergency vehicles to travel through. So some of the many decisions necessary are: When: Every Total Fire Ban day; the day before a predicted extreme fire risk day(s); in the morning of such a day; when you can smell or see smoke; when you are told to leave. Unlike NSW, Victorian Police have no authority to force you to leave, but they can advise you to leave. Where do you go: Where do you go; friends in urban areas; shopping centre; the cinema; ease of road access/egress: local knowledge of roads; do you know the direction of the fire? What if you are on holidays away from home? What do you take: Tricky, because you don’t know when you are able to return home safely if there has been a fire in your district and you may not be able to return for some days. What ifs?: What if you had a doctor’s appointment or an appointment with a hairdresser, had overseas/interstate visitors, or had your car booked in for a service on that day? What if you have pets and/or livestock? If it is a school day and do you know you what your children’s school policy is? How well is your property prepared to minimise any risk. Have you discussed with all household members what you plan to do, and have actually had a practice run on what you would do? Do you have any vulnerable family members, whether very young, with a disability or elderly, or have just sprained your ankle during a clean up? Lacking any sort of planning and preparation is likely to bring on a sense of panic which in turn can result in poor and last minute decisions. A critical factor in this is paying attention to the weather forecasts, especially the wind and its predicted changes, as these factors influence how a fire can behave and which direction it can come from. One of the most annoying aspects of some TV weather forecasts is that the wind speed is measured in Knots, supposedly to satisfy the Sydneysider yachting fraternity. So if the wind speed is forecast as 45 knots, that is actually closer 90 k/hr winds a huge difference! The more responsibility you can take for managing the bushfire preparedness of your household, the more likely you will be able to deal with our annual bushfire threat. Take care this summer.
10.01.2022 The Bureau has confirmed that a La Niña has formed in the tropical Pacific, with climate models suggesting it's likely to remain until at least the end of 2020.... La Niña typically brings: A wetter-than-average spring and summer to northern and eastern Australia; Cooler-than-average days and warmer-than-average nights; Increased tropical cyclone numbers; An earlier start to the monsoon and wet season; Average fire risk; and Less intense but more prolonged heatwaves across southern Australia. But every La Niña event is different. Once La Niña develops it usually finishes the following autumn, but some events have lasted 2 or 3 years. Rainfall can also vary considerably. During the last big event of 2010-2012 rainfall was above average across most of Australia (we saw Category 5 tropical cyclone Yasi devastate far north Queensland communities during this period), whereas rainfall during the La Niña event of 2008-2009 was much more patchy. 10.01.2022 So glad we’re in Australia and not the USA right now. This might get the message across over there
09.01.2022 We’ve done so well battling the corona virus and supporting each other. A health pandemic was something we had to learn about, fast, but we all know about the devastation a dangerous fire season can bring. For the sake of our valiant fire fighters, for vulnerable people in our communities and for ourselves we need to do everything we can to prepare. Help to do that is at hand.
08.01.2022 Did you know that today marks the 150th anniversary of the former Shire of Eltham? On this day in history, 6 April 1871, the Shire was officially proclaimed. Ba...ck then, Eltham had a population of only 165 people and there were 2550 residents across the entire municipality, according to the Eltham District Historical Society Inc. Over the years the Shire’s population grew and by December 1994, 50,000 people called the area home. On 15 December 1994, local government restructuring saw the Shire join parts of Diamond Valley, Healesville and Whittlesea to form the new Shire of Nillumbik. You can find out more about the fascinating history of the Shire of Eltham at the Eltham District Historical Society Inc’s website www.elthamhistory.org.au Picture: Procession of parade floats in Main Road, Eltham, part of the Shire of Eltham Centenary celebrations, 10 April 1971 (Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection held jointly by Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library).
08.01.2022 NAIDOC week is a celebration of the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. For 2020, NAIDOC week is being celebrate...d across the country from 8 November to 15 November. NAIDOC gives all Australians an opportunity to participate in a range of community activities and to engage with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The NAIDOC theme for 2020 is Always Was, Always Will Be. Recognising First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are spiritually and culturally connected to this country and were Australia's first explorers, navigators, engineers, farmers, botanists, scientists, diplomats, astronomers and artists. Australia has the world's oldest oral stories. The First Peoples engraved the world's first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies. We built and engineered structures - structures on Earth - predating well-known sites such as the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge. First Nations Peoples' adaptation and intimate knowledge of Country enabled them to endure climate change, catastrophic droughts and rising sea levels.
