23.01.2022 "There is more to the spiritual path than just meditation and introspection. There are also the qualities of generosity, patience, loving kindness, compassion ...and so on, which you need to have other people around to develop. It's easy to sit in a cave thinking, 'May all beings be well and happy,' but it's a different thing if you're out in the marketplace meeting those beings, many of whom are quite difficult to deal with. So that's when you really develop those kind of social muscles." ~Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo See more

22.01.2022 THE ARHATS RudraAsianArt.etsy.com In Buddhism, an Arhat is one who has gained insight into the true nature of existence and has achieved nirvana. Arhat, a term... which first developed usage in the 19th century through Western scholars, derives from the Sanskrit root arh (arhati) and literally means "worthy" or "deserving." The term is usually used to refer to a set of enlightened followers of the Buddha. The original Sanskrit term, however, was ‘sthavira,’ meaning ‘elder.’ In Theravada Buddhism, the Buddha himself is first identified as an Arhat, as are his sixteen enlightened followers, because they are free from all defilements, existing without greed, hatred, delusion, ignorance, and craving. Lacking "attachments" which will lead to future birth, the Arhat knows and sees the real here and now. This virtue shows stainless purity, true worth, and the accomplishment of the end. Mahayana Buddhism regarded the great group of sixteen Arhats as awaiting the return of the Buddha as Maitreya. The group of sixteen great Arhats represent what is believed to have been the original students and followers of the historical Buddha. In popular Buddhism, the Arhat has become a figure endowed with magical powers. The Arhat, as one who has realized the summit of the spiritual path, is worshiped on the popular level as a field of merit and source of magical, protective power. Some in effect become protective deities believed to have the power to prevent violence and illness. Offerings to their images or symbolic representations of their presence constitute a religious/cultural practice in both domestic and public rituals. Arhats are well-known for their great wisdom, courage, and supernatural powers. Due to their abilities to ward off the evil, Arhats have become guardians of the Buddhist temples and shrine rooms. The traditional original sixteen great Arhats are: 1, Agaja, 2. Ajita, 3. Vanavsin, 4. Kalika, 5. Vajriputra, 6. Bhadra, 7. Kanakavatsa, 8. Kanaka Bhradvja, 9. Nakula/Bakula, 10. Rhula, 11. Capanthaka, 12. Piola Bhradvja. 13. Panthaka, 14. Ngasena, 15. Gopaka, 16. Subinda/Abhedya Artists, be they painters, sculptors, embroiderers, or potters, have sought to give flesh and blood to these legendary figures. Innumerous scriptures and legends have served to provide attributes and dispositions, from which the artists draw their inspiration. As each artist has his own method of expression, thus the portrayals of the Arhats differ from school to school, age to age, and from place to place. RudraAsianArt.etsy.com is very excited to announce new listings of very rare antique embroidered thangkas of five Arhats. Click the links and see the extraordinary details in the fine embroidery. These would be a blessing and honor in any shrine room! AJITA THE ELDER (Tibetan: ne ten, ma pham pa, Sanskrit: Sthavira Ajita) The 2nd Arhat in the set of sixteen great Arhats. Ajita Elder is commonly portrayed as very elderly in appearance having long eyebrows with his hands placed in the mudra of meditation, however there are several different and varying traditions graphically depicting the arhats. On the Rishi Mountain in Crystal Forest is the noble elder Ajita, surrounded by 100 arhats. Homage to the One with the two hands placed in meditation. The left hand holds a fly whisk topped with a tuft of white yak tail hair. On the Island of Singha is the noble elder Vajriputra, surrounded by 1,000 arhats. Kanaka Bharadhvaja is commonly portrayed with the two hands in the gesture of meditation folded in the lap. He is often portrayed with an red orange or yellow head covering, however there are various traditions depicting different poses. 22.01.2022 "One develops all sorts of qualities in a social context that one cannot develop alone, just as one develops many qualities alone that one couldn't develop in a... social context. It's like breathing in and breathing out. We need to balance the two." ~Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo See more

21.01.2022 Attachment and Love "In the tradition of the Buddha Dharma , meditation is only one of the many qualities which is emphasised. It's a very important one becaus...e we have to understand our mind, and we can only understand our mind by looking at it. But to be a well-balanced practitioner and reach our aim of being a totally integrated and realised being, we must develop many other essential qualities. Among these are generosity, tolerance, patience, ethics, loving kindness, compassion, and so on. Now if we take something like ethics or loving kindness, it's obvious that one needs other people in order to practise. it's very easy living up in a retreat to be ethical, because there is no one to steal from, no one to lie to. It's no big deal to be patient. And to be generous, it's only necessary to throw out a few crumbs to the birds. Yes, very generous! We need others. We need society in order to really exercise these essential qualities. So we start where we are. If we are really sincere about having the Dharma in our heart the Dharma starts right here, right now, with those beings~especially with those beings with whom for some reason we are karmically connected. Those are the people we have to work on. Those are the people with whom we really have to purify our hearts. Because if you cannot do it with them, then with whom else? This is very important." ~Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo in her book "3 Teachings Retreat. Mahamudra, Mindfulness our daily life as spiritual practice"

20.01.2022 Some of you may be interested to read this extract from an old copy of Mandala, author unknown. It outlines the first time Lama Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche br...ought Tibetan Buddhism to Australia, the beginnings of Chenrezig Institute, the incredible people who made it happen and some lovely anecdotes and eye witness accounts. It's a long and beautifully descriptive passage - you can almost imagine you're there. We hope you enjoy it! The first Tibetan Buddhism course ever held in Australia The Lamas’ first Australian course was given in Diamond Valley, southeast of Queensland, from August 30 to September 28, 1974. A core group of dedicated Australian students including Nick Ribush, Ven. Yeshe Khadro, and Tom and Kathy Vichta had worked tirelessly for eight months preparing for the course. It was held on an open piece of land in a remote setting beside a pretty creek near the Vichtas’ small farm. Pete Northend appeared just in time to build a small two-roomed cabin for the Lamas out of mill ends lined with styrofoam. Their cold water stand pipe was the most sophisticated plumbing on site. The only hot water available came from a forty-four gallon drum suspended over a fire. Two hundred people turned up for the much anticipated thirty-day course and despite certain physical discomforts, the dropout rate was remarkably low. A big marquee sat above a tent city like a scene from the gold rush era. There was a main street and little clusters of tents tucked into gullies here and there. The kitchen tent was set up beside the creek and tree trunks dragged into a semicircle served as seating. The cuisine was rigidly purist a macrobiotic spread of brown rice, vegetables, tofu and miso, all washed down with soy bean coffee and alfalfa tea. Out in the tent city however, secret cakes were shared in the dark, cheeses stashed away and real coffee brewed in hidden gullies. Fights broke out over sweet biscuits. THE BIRTH OF CHENREZIG INSTITUTE At a meeting held one very hot afternoon during the Diamond Valley course, the decision was made to build a permanent Australian centre. Later that day, while everyone else was in the main tent with Lama Zopa Rinpoche, and Lama Yeshe was in his little cabin, a bushfire broke out in the valley. Somebody had the presence of mind to hit the big dinner gong. Everybody rushed out to see fire rapidly approaching the cabin. Quick, Lama, they shouted, banging on his door. Get out now, the fire is coming this way and your cabin is lined in plastic! It will go up like a bomb! Lama laughed. He told his frantic students the fire was an auspicious sign indicating that the new Queensland centre would grow very quickly. The fire stopped one hundred meters from his cabin. Lama Yeshe didn’t even come out of his room to watch. Lama Zopa Rinpoche just continued teaching. With the plan for their own centre now gathering momentum, Lama Yeshe asked his Australian students to sign a petition inviting His Holiness the Dalai Lama to visit the country. Meanwhile Lama Yeshe, Anila Ann, Ven. Yeshe Khadro, the Vichtas and a few others got together to discuss potentially suitable sites. Nick Ribush, Ven. Yeshe Khadro and Tom and Kathy Vichta happened to jointly own land at nearby Eudlo. At Lama’s request they drew up maps, including another piece of land Nick and YK part-owned. Lama Yeshe sent these to His Holiness Trijang Rinpoche for his approval. Just before the course ended they received word that the Eudlo land was most auspicious. On the last day of the course, September 28, 1974, everyone made a ceremonial pilgrimage to the Eudlo land via a walking track leading up from Diamond Valley. The Lamas led an intense puja and named the centre, Chenrezig Institute for Wisdom Culture. That evening, Anila Ann asked Lama Yeshe the purpose of that puja: 'There isn’t any place on this planet that is not possessed by sentient beings, consciousness,' he told her. 'So in this particular place the consciousness possessing it needs to be assured we will only do positive things there. We make offerings to ask for its assistance and tell it we have no intent to harm it or its possession of anything there,' he explained. Chenrezig Institute began as the first official Tibetan Buddhist centre in the Western world and today is still one of the largest. The Institute is composed of a resident geshe, a large community of ordained Sangha, residents, volunteers, retreatants and guests. Apart from the formal study programs, Chenrezig Institute is a peaceful, calm and relaxing place to spend a few ... www.chenrezig.com.au July September 2009 Mandala Author not stated

16.01.2022 Question: Do you see women in Buddhism taking more of a leadership role in the future? Would the nuns you are training perhaps become spiritual teachers? JTP a...nswers: "Finally there is a recognition of this female element, and I think in the next ten years it will be very interesting to see what happens once these nuns graduate from their studies and become more mature figures, to see what kind of voice they are going to have in their society. I think that will be very interesting. So to be a part of that is good, even though sometimes it seems an impossible task. But actually things are worthwhile. Because if we don;t do it, nobody else is going to. The lamas are not going to do it. The women have to help each other, there's no doubt. To be part of that whole movement is nice. It's very strong at this time; the impetus is really flowing in full flood for helping these women." This exchange is from an interview 20 years ago, before the DGL Nunnery, college and temple were built. The first graduating class of tsunmas (female monastics) just completed their education. Several became teachers at the nunnery, others entered long term retreat, others are serving the nunnery in various roles. They manage the nunnery and are a new generation of leaders. How wonderful that is!
