Current research suggests that children tend to get infected with coronavirus less often, and have milder symptoms than adults. However, parents should be aware of both mild and severe symptoms. Severe symptoms in children with COVID-19 are very rare; nonetheless it is worth being aware of them. In children, COVID-19 manifests typically as a viral infection of the airways. If you have previously consulted with me in my rooms, you would have been informed of the danger signs in childhood illnesses and when to seek medical assistance. These danger signs are very similar to severe COVID-19 symptoms in children. Seek assistance if your child develops any of the following: Persistent fever higher than 38.5 degrees that you fail to control with the appropriate doses of antipyretics, or fever which lasts longer than 48 Severe vomiting and/or diarrhea with poor feeding Fast and labored breathing Audible wheezing (whistling sound when breathing out) associated with labored breathing. I advise looking at a YouTube video of a child wheezing for clarity on the sound. Note-a sound when breathing in is not wheezing Turning blue around the mouth or extremities (Cyanosis) Confusion Lethargy Seizures with or without fevers Children with severe symptoms may require admission for oxygen, intravenous fluids and supportive care. If you have any suspicions or concerns and any of the above danger signs are present, please see your medical practitioner. *If any of these symptoms do develop, they may be caused by another illness and not necessarily COVID-19. Rachel completed her physiotherapy degree in South Africa in 2007 and has worked in private practice for the last 10 years treating only paediatric clients.... She developed a very strong interest in managing acute respiratory conditions, developmental delays (in especially premature babies), Cerebral Palsy, Plagiocephaly/Torticollis and newborn behavior and relocated to Rockingham in March 2018. Rachel has a play-based approach to facilitating movement and strength development in children. She provides activities for play and home exercise programs, and is passionate in developing tailored programs that support children and their families to work towards their goals and increase their independence and confidence in managing their childs condition.
