24.01.2022 After filling in this fresh dug out rabbit burrow , I set up a camera for 10 days to see when the rabbit may return . This is one of the old burrows that gets dug up from time to time , in the Feral proof Sunset Sanctuary we still have approximately 3or 4 rabbits which are being hard to track down and remove . These are the pics we got each day , not one of a rabbit .We have tried leaving burrows open and bringing in ferrets but have never caught a rabbit , they seem to dig out burrows but hardly live in them .
24.01.2022 Happy World Lizard Day
23.01.2022 A nice place to sit and enjoy the sun listening to the frogs and birds at the bottom swamp on Sunset Sanctuary ,usually Pademelons or Wallaby’s hoping around .This month there has been large flocks of Red Browed Finches feeding here .
22.01.2022 Nesting time again.. Thornbills busy stripping the bark off the gum trees to make their nests
22.01.2022 The latest nesting hollows that went up yesterday , hopefully by increasing the amount of hollows it will increase the numbers of gliders and may be one day Phascogales may return to the sanctuary. Thank you to people donating the logs ,saved from there fire wood piles
22.01.2022 Heat wave at Sunset Sanctuary
21.01.2022 This the Eastern Brown Snake trying to mate under logs at Krurr-rak Conservation Reserve.
20.01.2022 Last day of the camp at Krurr-rak Conservation Reserve ,after the nights rain Variegated Banjo Frogs were everywhere . I think it turned out to be a event full of good discussions , on our private conservation properties shame all KPCN members couldnt meet and camp due to restrictions .
19.01.2022 Found this interesting little fungus growing in a few spots on Sunset Sanctuary. Known as Dead Mans Thumb or Earth Tongue Cordyceps gunnii. Thank you to Jordan Whitmore and Colin Cook for help with lD the fungi
17.01.2022 Cold afternoon at Sunset Sanctuary with some strange animals found
16.01.2022 One of my favourite spots on Sunset Sanctuary all the rocks covered in Lichen and Mosses . Always Antechinus and Sugar Gliders in this area .Also some photos of the water fall I built some years back flowing after heavy rain , a Pademelons sitting on the island in the bottom swamp. Plus the first animal I have found stuck in the fence , a yabbie and wasn’t to happy to be set free .
13.01.2022 Striated Thornbill enjoying a morning bath in the bottom swamp
13.01.2022 Planting a few more Banksias
12.01.2022 Enjoyable night walk around Sunset Sanctuary . Slowly getting a few animals for our rewilding project , but it has been slow with Covid lockdown , since we finished cat and fox proofing the sanctuary back in February ,hopefully things will improve soon and we will be able get some more animals
11.01.2022 This the male trying to find female after she made a break for it into a hole
10.01.2022 Once we had finished fencing the property, we started work on a new fence around the house , to protect Lynnes flowers her roses being her pride and joy .When l had the Reptile Park years ago had no problems with wallaby’s jumping a 900 mm fence so thought that height should be ok , fence finished looking good, wallaby’s hopped over that and straight into the roses , l was in the bad books , l raised height of fence to 1100 mm that stopped them for a little while, then back ag...ain almost all roses gone , raised fence to 1400 mm height with plain wire that seemed to stopped them l may be back in the good books , that was in April . This season starts flowers and fruit tree all good till one night one had climbed the wire and got in between the plain wire and gets straight into fruit trees and roses . So I place 300mm of rabbit wire between plain wire and so far so good . Happy wife happy life See more
10.01.2022 Swamp Wallaby joey up and about by itself now. Has a nice white tip on its tail
10.01.2022 Out for a small night walk and noticed a Spur Winged Plover sitting on the bank of the 3 tier wetlands. I never bothered to check photos that night , next day was looking for snakes , found a Copperheads tail sticking out of the grass , then I discovered the reason the Plover was there. She had a nest right out in the open with 4 eggs in it . Checked night photo and can clearly see the eggs
10.01.2022 Finally some warm weather which was great for the KPCN camp and reptiles were on the move ,also moving roof tiles into the sandier country on an earlier camp helped to make it easier to find burrowing species which made for a better reptile talk . I was lucky to find this big Brown Snake cruising around , he came up to a log pile and started to poke around I thought this would be good as I may get some feeding pics , but instead he started to get a little excited and half m...oved out a female that was sheltered there , he then started to try and mate with her for a couple of hours , they kept moving around the pile of logs , then she made a dash for it flying around the wood pile and straight in a hole , he searched around for about half hour but could seem to find the hole she went in , he gave up and went on his way , probably very disappointed . See more
09.01.2022 First nice sized Copperhead for spring at Sunset Sanctuary , cruising around the 3 tier wetlands . You can see when it knows I’m beside him , flares its head out , when it knows I’m no threat continues on , enjoying the sun
09.01.2022 Spent a day at Krurr-rak Conservation Reserve ,spraying weeds ( Thistles , Nettles , Bridal Creeper and digging up South African Orchid Weed) . Plus just enjoying the sanctuary . Found this Long necked Turtle enjoying a bask at the edge of the dam. The direct seeding is starting to look good with wattles starting to get a bit of size and colour . Heard some Southern Red -tailed Black Cockatoos calling but didnt manage to find them .
09.01.2022 Nice time for a red at Sunset Sanctuary
09.01.2022 Some of the blue tongues seen recently cruising around Sunset Sanctuary, enjoying the sun finally.
08.01.2022 Striated Thornbill enjoying a morning wash in the bottom swamp
07.01.2022 First attempted break in by a Echidna since last year ,you can see how if it gets in ,a rabbit, fox or cat could follow. Once this happens I dig a 100mm trench at the end of the wire peg it down in the trench and cover area in crushed concrete .
07.01.2022 Gippsland Water Dragons enjoying early morning sun
07.01.2022 One of the old bath troughs full of tadpoles, it was one of the reasons we left them in , they were put in by the previous owner for his cattle ,before we extended the sanctuary (not my bath water as mates have suggested haha )
06.01.2022 Sunset Sanctuary in all its beauty , spear grasses and lots of other native grasses , orchids and chocolate lilies if full flower everywhere
04.01.2022 The Sunset Sanctuary always looks very colourful this time of the year with all the Wattles that we have planted starting to flower . Good time of the year to see Sugar Gliders enjoying a feed in the Wattles as well
03.01.2022 The male decided to leave after half hour of looking for female with no luck
02.01.2022 A few reptiles starting to come out of hibernation. Have seen a couple of blue tongues on the sanctuary starting to move around. Roll on the warmer weather .
02.01.2022 Controlling weeds on the section of the Moonlight Creek reserve we manage , mostly thistles and cape weed .When we first started work on the creek you couldn’t walk through this area Gorse , Black berries , Briar rose and Spiny rush were so thick . Now walking along the creek is not a problem and you can even see the water flowing in the creek .Does seem strange that we have to lease the area from DELWP ,to protect the area
02.01.2022 Couple of Copperheads out this morning and a small Echidna from yesterday
01.01.2022 The Welcome Swallows decide to nest in the shed , so I had to cut new lock hole in the door slide to allow the door to stay up a bit so they could fly into the shed when we were away , also propping door open with a piece of wood on wet days . They raised three healthy chicks , all have left now ,only returning when its wet . They did build two nests so whether they'll be back to raise another brood this year
