22.01.2022 With the introduction of our wave painting to our gallery I thought I’d introduce you to the artist Brett Whiteley. Though I can’t find any record of it now, I recall an art teacher once set us an exercise inspired by a Whiteley quote that went something among the lines of past the point of frustration is where you create great art. The exercise was to paint the same thing 20 times. I was told that Whiteley set himself exercise with a series of wave sketches which led to hi...s notable seascape paintings. Brett Whiteley AO (7 April 1939 15 June 1992) is one of Australia’s most celebrated artists. He won the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes several times, and was the first artist to win all 3 in the same year. He also set record for the highest selling price for an Australian artwork. He worked across painting, sculpture and the graphic arts, and is best known for his sensual figurative Expressionism paintings of interiors, nudes and harbour scenes. 07.01.2022 Let me introduce you to the American artist, Georgia OKeeffe (18871986). Although she is not well known here, she is widely recognised as the "Mother of American modernism". After an un-inspiring art education (of copying nature), she was later inspired by art based upon personal style, design, and interpretation of subjects, rather than trying to copy or represent them. This caused a major change in the way she approached art. She became well known for her paintings of enl...arged flowers, New York skyscrapers, and New Mexico landscapes, all of which were considered quite revolutionary for her time. In 2014, OKeeffes 1932 painting Jimson Weed sold for $44,405,000 USD, more than three times the previous world auction record for any female artist. After her death, the Georgia OKeeffe Museum was established, and still remains in Santa Fe.

03.01.2022 With many of you asking to paint Frida recently, I thought Id take the opportunity to introduce you to the woman behind the monobrow. Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) w...as a Mexican painter best known for her honest and lush self-portraits that deal with themes of identity, the human body, and death. Her work is often identified as Surrealist (although she denied the connection) and is filled with objects that carry deep symbolism. She spent great periods of her life convalescing after polio, as well as terrible injuries sustained during a bus accident when she was 18 years old. As a result she painted many of her works from bed. She was married, divorced, and remarried to Diego Rivera, a well known mural artist and member of the Mexican Communist Party. She is celebrated as a strong and uncompromising female artist of her time whose work is still deeply admired to this day. Come and join us to paint this amazing woman sometime soon!
