24.01.2022 Week #8 Trees Observation trunks branches and foliage with a crunched up piece of alfoil

19.01.2022 Thought I would share some outdoor Art experiences with you. Our growing children need oxygen from trees away from the sceened objects. Agree? Once a week I'll be at different locations around Cairns. Art is noticing. Giving trees characters. Using soft clay and pressing in tree bits. It was lots of fun treasure hunting. How to break long dry branches without breaking your foot. Concentration too short? Solution: a race to count the wooden slats on a park bench..then back to the task. Happy Week 1 earthlings

19.01.2022 Week #11 Lovely bark collages made in an hour by 2 very talented young ladies. Skills at peeling bark into thin manageable pieces, sorting into dark and light, observing horizontal lines for background and vertical lines for objects in the foreground, searching for and observing natural shapes and curves. Started from the top of the page and overlapping pieces. Pva glue. Had so much fun today.

19.01.2022 Week #9 Fields of Flowers. A few weeks a go we went to Cairns Botanical Gardens. There's an enclosure in the middle with some amazing orchids and butterflies. We'll do butterflies later on but found a great way to do flowers also using the crumpled up alfoil method. We did the bachground wash 1st then used a cotton bud stick to paint some flower stems. Try to get as many different colours as you can. Always stand back from your painting to see the effect from a distance.

19.01.2022 Week #12 Rememberance Day Poppies. We looked up the heroes of every family who went to wars. 800 lighthorsemen, unmarked graves and even relatives who endured Japanese prison camps who fought and bled side by side for everyone in this country ...with all its faults. We observed poppy flowers on google images.... We cut all different sized squares from drawing paper (Approx 2-5cm)and saw the similarity of rectangles. Using flat brushes used 2 different tones of red and painted from the centerout in strokes to the edge. Used black to create depth in the center. We learnt to cut the petals by swivelling the paper around the scissors. Then used a thin round brush to ever so lightly put little yellow dots. Finally pasting the poppies onto a contrasting background card overlapping some for depth. Lovely

16.01.2022 Week #3. Construction. We made a fun park! Found some card in the throw out box in the reject shop. Made some carts and cutout photos of the kids to put in them. Used toilet rolls for supports of our rides. A little stapler proved very useful. Top off with some spiderman stickers. A child to mimic the Luna Park gates and there u have it!! Ha ha lots of fun for about $4.

16.01.2022 Week #10. Fish skeletons. We looked at all the photos we took at the Cairns Aquarium. So many coloured fish. Had an outline of head and tail drawn on paper and painted it one colour with a flat brush. Then put patterns on with another colour with a tiny round brush. The skill is to paint inside the outline and to swivel the little brush as u paint!.... Cut it out when dry. When cutting with scissors tight corners, just fold the paper (makes it really easy to cut out eyes etc) We also looked at fish skeletons on the internet so intricate and 'freaky' (remember I'm working with early primary school age children). Then joined the head to the tail with wool using 2cm wide sticky tape from reject shop. Cut and stuck on ribs. They look great on the glass door and aka doesnt run into it anymore

14.01.2022 Week #4 We looked at the anatomy of a guinea pig's eye. Did u know they have 3 eye lids? We studied camouflage and painted the guinea pig cage.

14.01.2022 So Week 2 we went back to the park and made whole bodies out of tree left overs.

10.01.2022 Week#7 Owls. We watched a youtube video about owls and looked how we can make shapes by squinting our eyes. Starting with owl eyes circles, head and wings drawing on black paper.. We learnt about colours too. Only allowed to use 2 primary colours and see what secondary colour they make when mixed. Red + Yellow = Orange, Blue + Yellow = Green, Red + Blue = Purple. Extra...We used the left over paint and folded the paper in half and drew an owl face over.

10.01.2022 Week #5 Grandma has herbs growing in the garden. The leaves have exotic smells, that's how we can tell they are for healing. A variety of shapes and textures. We decided to make pendants with the pressed leaf. Googled the healing properties and rolled and patted clay to similar to a 20c coin. Pressed the leaf in and used a straw to make a hole to make a pendant. Next week add colour!

05.01.2022 Off to Fiji for a week.

03.01.2022 Week #6 Colouring the pendants. 2 ways. Rub colour into the crevises and wipe off or lightly wipe on the colour. Still have to spray with varnish and make twine to hang around grandma's neck.
