21.01.2022 Family violence has increased dramatically during COVID-19 and has been referred to as the shadow pandemic - unseen and unheard. What a wonderful gift this season - a donation of a Buddy Bag from the Alannah & Madeline Foundation to provide the essentials to children displaced by family violence. Often these children and families flee with little more than the clothes they are wearing. Each Buddy Bag contains items such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, pillowcase, fa...cewasher, PJs, underwear and socks. Special gifts to provide comfort and care are the important teddy bear, photo frame and storybook. Have a look at the Alannah and Madeline Foundation website for more information. https://www.amf.org.au/what-we-do/buddy-bags/

20.01.2022 ’ = ’ I have been talking with some young people over the last few months - and years! Some recent themes have come up regarding sports teams, particularly with the AFL and NRL grand finals. For many kids and boys especially, sporting teams become a psychological extension of themselves. They celebrate team victories as though they are their own, and are devastated with a loss. ... Adults often give each other a ribbing when the other person’s team performs poorly. Usually it is taken in jest. When it comes to children and young people, such humour can be taken very personally. When there is criticism, it may be experienced as a personal insult. Your team’s shit = You’re shit They’re losers = You’re a loser Player X couldn’t even kick straight = You’re hopeless So sometimes a joke is a joke. At other times, jokes can be hurtful. Banter about sporting teams can be fun. Banter can also be used as a bullying tactic - one that is subtle and on the face of it, can seem benign. If a young person is being singled out, excluded, put down, pushed around or being bullied, these jokes can be used and are designed to make them feel bad. Remember, it is the pattern of behaviour that makes it bullying. It must also be kept in mind that bullying often occurs out of sight, so that to adults or other people, the joke is simply a joke. So the next time that you hear someone joke about a team to a young person or when you do so yourself, consider the way that they may feel and do something positive about it. .

18.01.2022 Does Elfie visit your home at Christmas? This article makes some good points about trying to avoid using the elf as a means of punishment - reporting on 'bad' or 'naughty' behaviour to Santa who may withhold presents. The elf can be used to reinforce 'good' or desirable behaviour.... HOWEVER- Perhaps the wonderful thing of introducing the elf at home is to encourage imagination. Every year there are some very creative and funny photos posted on FB and Instagram. Imagine the fun of waking up in the morning and checking out what crazy and funny things the elf has been up to overnight. Yes, you do need to remember to move the elf (!) but it can be a really fun thing to do. If you have older kids, get them involved too. Have a laugh together. Goodness knows it's needed this year. Enjoy!

18.01.2022 Post lockdown anxiety. Yes, it’s a thing. Who knew that after months of being restricted - where we can go, what we can do and who we can see - that the loosening of restrictions could actually cause anxiety?! In fact, the loosening of restrictions has amplified anxiety for many people who understandably have worried about their health and wellbeing, employment, schooling, felt isolated from loved ones, and concerned for the health and wellbeing of their family and friends. ... Check out this article by the Australian Psychological SocietyyPsychlopaediaa. The article talks about post-lockdown anxiety in greater detail and has some excellent suggestions to manage your worries. #PsychologyWeek #MentalHealthMatters . https://psychlopaedia.org//fear-of-going-out-heres-how-me/ .

15.01.2022 ’ ! IMD celebrates men and boys in all of their diversity. Traditionally people talk about manning up and tackling issues. ... Manning up means speaking up, taking charge and getting help for health problems. Sometimes though, it’s important to man down - to drop the armour or bravado and reach out for support. Be a positive role model for little boys and teach them that it is okay to have strong feelings and cry, it is not weak to ask for help, and that ‘real men’ respect girls, women and other people. #ImproveMensHealth #IMD2020 #BoysToMen
