24.01.2022 Topic of conversation; winter perfumes. Results are in, the people have spoken. It’s actually really nice and refreshing to see something different on this list than your normal mainstream perfumes. So the top five ladies from 1-5 include: Guerlain Mon Guerlain, Tom Ford Black Orchid, Frederic Malle Iris Poudre, Hermes Elixir De Merveilles and Lancôme Oud Bouquet. Top five men’s from 1-5 include: Valentino Uomo, Viktor & Spicebomb, Armani Code Profumo, Maison Francis Kurkdjian Grand Soir and Issey Miyake Nuit D’Issey Pulse. 15.01.2022 5 May 1921 - 5 May 2021 Celebrating 100 years of Gabrielle Coco Chanel’s first perfume launch, the timeless Chanel no.5. Grab yourself a cup of coffee and kick back on your favourite comfy couch. We’re just getting started. Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel was born 19th August 1883 in France. When she was 11 years old, her mother died and her father sent her and her sisters to the convent of Aubazine which ran an orphanage. This is where Chanel learnt how to sew. When Chanel turned 1...8, she went to live in a boarding house for catholic girls in a town called Moulins. Having spent 6 years learning how to sew, Chanel got to working as a seamstress. If she wasn’t sewing, she was singing at a popular cafe which is how she got her nickname ‘Coco.’ Fast forward a few years to 1920, Chanel commissioned master perfumer Ernest Beaux to present a perfume that was not for the respectable women of that time but for the ‘flappers’ of that time. The liberated, feminine spirits of the roaring 20’s. Chanel was presented with small vials containing samples of scents numbered 1-5 and 20-24. Chanel chose sample bottle 5. She later stated I present my dress collections on the fifth of May, the fifth month of the year and so we will let this sample number five keep the name it has already. It will bring good luck. Growing up in the care of the nuns, the number five had potent associations for Chanel. It was especially esteemed as signifying the pure embodiment of a mystic meaning. The circular patterns on the path that led Chanel to the cathedral for daily prayer, repeated the number five. The bottle shape has changed very little over the years. It is said that the inspiration for it was from her lover Capel’s whiskey decanter or the toiletry bottles that lined his leather travel case. Chanel no.5 is a floral aldehyde fragrance that has never stopped selling from the moment it was released on May 5th 1921 in rue Cambon Paris. Many things happened along the way and changed for Gabrielle Coco Chanel until her death on January 10th 1971 (aged 87) but the one thing that always remained until this very day, was Chanel no.5.
