21.01.2022 --Remembrance Day 2020-- Today and every day, we remember and pay tribute to the Australians who served overseas during times of war. We commemorate the noble sacrifices of more than 330,000 Australians, out of whom more than 60,000 died fighting for their country. ... There were also 19 Greek Australian ANZACS; one of whom was from Sparta, who went back to Europe and fought for Australia. The social ramifications of these losses will forever cast a shadow over the postwar decade, and today we remember their fortitude and valiance.

19.01.2022 Thank you so much to our friends at NEOS KOSMOS for inviting Youth President Miltiadis Paikopoulos to discuss how we as youth can make the arts and entertainment more accessible and engaging to Greek-Australian youth. Now more than ever, we are relying on technology to connect with others in ways we never have before. As a club, we viewed this as the perfect opportunity to initiate a series of virtual lectures commemorating the 2500th year Anniversary of the Battle of T...hermopylae. The lectures covered topics such as classical antiquity, Byzantine iconography, Greek identity and the Battle of Thermopylae itself. Well done Miltiadis for your initiative and thank you to Neos Kosmos for the feature!! https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=3678139505544135&id=112125468812241

10.01.2022 This august painting by the Neoclassical artist Giuseppe Diotti (1840) reveals a controversial tradition that may have been practiced in Ancient Sparta known as the judgement of the infant. As the tradition goes, Spartan parents would bathe their child in wine before before a Council of Elders known as the Gerousia who would examine the baby carefully in order to determine its reaction and whether it had any deformities. It was rumoured that either those who failed the Gerou...sia's test were taken away to become a slave (), or taken to the apothetai () or place of Exposure upon Mt Taygetos. Interestingly, contenders for the location of the apothetai on Mt Taygetos have (to date) revealed only the skeletal remains of horses and adults (probably criminals). Plutarch said, the women used to bathe their newborn babes not with water, but with wine, thus making a sort of test of their constitutions. For it is said that epileptic and sickly infants are thrown into convulsions by the strong wine and lose their senses, while the healthy ones are rather tempered by it, like steel, and given a firm habit of body (Lycurgus, 16. 2-4).

09.01.2022 We are so excited to be hosting this amazing lecture on the 10th of September! Connecting Spartans in Greece and Australia is our passion, and how better to honour the Battle of Thermopylae than to have a young Spartan archaeologist, and Founder of "Embracing our Monuments in Sparta", speak about her work conserving Laconian archaeological sites and monuments! Because of the lecture's global audience, and to facilitate our international viewers, we have decided to move ...the lecture to 7PM Melbourne Time! (For our viewers in Greece this is 12PM Athens time, and for our British viewers that is 10AM UK time. ) https://www.facebook.com/events/333195911062476 Don't Forget: When? 7PM 10th of September 2020 Where?https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83574090097

09.01.2022 Today the Pallaconian Brotherhood remembers the courage of the Greeks, who had the courage, strength and determination to say ‘oxi’ to the invasion of Mussolini during the 2nd World War, this day 80 years ago. The ultimatum made by Mussolini demanded that Greece allow the Italian and Axis forces to enter and annex Greece. Metaxas, the then Prime Minister of Greece, answered with one word, a decisive Oxi, and later added, in French Alors, c'est la guerre (Then, it is wa...r). Our word ‘oxi’ now has resounding political and cultural significance. US President Franklin Roosevelt said When the entire world had lost all hope, the Greek people dared to question the invincibility of the German monster raising against it the proud spirit of freedom. ! 28 !
