16.01.2022 "What do you think of when you hear ‘palliative care’? Being in hospital, pain management and the final days of life? Palliative care is often misinterpreted to be just end-of-life care, but it’s perhaps better described as quality of life care, or supportive care. The multi-disciplinary approach of palliative care is designed to enable you to live your life to the best of your ability by identifying and supporting your physical, emotional and social needs and wishes." Thanks to PCA and the Lung Foundation Australia for this insightful article.

02.01.2022 As Australia’s population ages and the number of people using aged care services increases, the demand for palliative care in aged care is also increasing. It is essential that palliative care is recognised as core business for all aged care providers. Providers and their staff must be supported by appropriate systems, funding and training to provide quality palliative care. The Palli8 campaign is an eight-point plan for palliative care in aged care that highlights issues a...nd provides constructive solutions. By discussing and communicating these eight recommendations, we hope to better support the aged care industry to deliver palliative care. #1 - A person centred approach: a holistic approach to palliative care must betaken in an aged care setting; a broader approach that doesn’t just commence at the end of life. 02.01.2022 Till death do we start guessing your health wishes. While many Tasmanians make a Will, far fewer complete an Advance Care Directive to guide family on their w...ishes if they become terminally ill or can no longer communicate. We should make sure the treatment we want, or don’t want, and under what circumstances, is made clear to family, friends, GPs and other health professionals. This is what an Advanced Care Directive does. It’s a legal document that records people's values and wishes at the end of their life. All Tasmanians should consider an Advance Care Directive, which should be updated regularly much as a Will is changed over one’s life course to reflect changes in circumstances, wishes and preferences. Advanced Care Directive forms are freely available in paper and electronic versions from Department of Health www.health.tas.gov.au//advance_care_planning_for_healthy_d An updated form is now available that’s easier to understand, but older versions are still accepted. Email [email protected] or call Palliative Care Tasmania on 6231 2799 for more information.
