13.01.2022 Women aged 20-39 account for around 5 per cent of all breast cancer diagnoses in Australia. ‘That means two young women every day hear the news they have breast cancer. In the middle of the whirlwind of decisions they have to make around treatment, these young women also have to consider the risk to their fertility.’ Fertility specialist Associate Professor Kate Stern said it was important for young women to be informed about the fertility risks of their treatment. A lot of y...oung women diagnosed with breast cancer will have chemotherapy. It is very effective against cancer cells, but can reduce the total number of eggs. That’s why it is vital for these young women to consider fertility as part of their treatment regimen. ‘Having a breast cancer diagnosis is really overwhelming. It's so important to have your oncology team, your treatment team and your fertility team working. https://www.youtube.com/watch See more

09.01.2022 Devastated and sad’ after 36 years of research early detection of ovarian cancer doesn’t save lives. There have been significant improvements in ovarian cancer treatment involving surgery and chemotherapy, but the sad and frustrating truth is of the four women diagnosed with ovarian cancer in Australia each day, three will eventually die from the disease. The diagnosis of ovarian cancer is dependent on women reporting symptoms to their doctor. However, few develop symptoms ...until they have advanced stage cancer, by which time the outlook is poor. Of all women’s cancers, ovarian cancer has the lowest survival rate, with just 46% of patients in Australia surviving five years. For breast cancer, it’s now 91%. https://oncologynews.com.au/devastated-and-sad-after-36-ye/

06.01.2022 Why People Who Are Dying Wont Talk About Death & Dying. People who are dying usually know what is happening to them. Nevertheless, when a dying person believes relatives and friends can’t cope with the truth, it can be hard for them to talk about what they’re experiencing or ask for what they want or need. The most important gift you can give to a dying person is to listen. https://www.dyingmatters.org/page/TalkingAboutDeathDying

03.01.2022 "Keeping your family strong in an extraordinarily stressful time." This is a Blog of a family whose daughter is diagnosed with Batten's Disease. "We Couldn't Save Our Girl But We Could Save Our Marriage"... We’d been a team for a number of years, partners in show choir and dates for the prom. We grew up together, earned college degrees, bought a house and got a dog. We painted the nursery, put together the crib, tried to match a name to our first baby and a bouquet of dreams. She was born seemingly healthy. She learned to talk early, waving and saying hi. Her favourite word was shoe. And everything was perfect. Until it wasn’t. We tried to take care of details, to tidy what could not really be tidied but often we sat together frozen while so much awfulness unspooled around us. We couldn’t save our girl, but we could save our marriage. As the arms of grief had draped themselves around us, we held one another tighter. Caregiving is tough and lonely, and we needed each other more than ever. https://courageousparentsnetwork.org/

03.01.2022 Mary Lloyd has breast cancer. "It has been a strange feeling hearing my possible death openly labelled inconsequential by public figures, commentators and even by some of my friends." My best protection right now is to avoid coming into contact with the virus entirely, and my best chance of that happening is if it is not spreading within my community. For that to happen, us potential 4 per centers are depending on hundreds of thousands of random strangers to be vigilant and ...take sensible precautions, not because they are worried they might die of the disease, but because they care enough about potentially thousands of vulnerable people who could. Right now, we are not feeling that love. https://www.abc.net.au//cancer-chemo-and-coronavi/12056582
