21.01.2022 National Reconciliation Week The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2021 is ‘More than Words’. Starting on 27 May, this week is about recognising that recon...ciliation is an action, with all of us playing our part to collectively build relationships and communities. Some local champions who are leading the way with their actions are the 15 Mt Barker participants in the Men’s Bush Classroom program. This was run by Palmerston Association in partnership with Mt Barker Police, Great Southern Aboriginal Health Service and Mount Barker Aboriginal Progress Association, under the guidance of local Noongar Elders. Participants covered many topics across a 10-week program, one of which was increasing awareness of alcohol-caused health issues. The message of saying no to alcohol and drugs was painted onto doors by Bush Classroom participants, who entered them into Mt Barker Creative Doors Festival. One of these designs was nominated for the ‘Best Painted Door’ category! #NRW2021 #MoreThanAWord Reconciliation Aust My Healthy Great Southern Mt Barker Aboriginal Community Centre Great Southern District - WA Police Force Mountains and Murals Mount Barker What's On in Mt Barker WA

01.01.2022 This week is NAIDOC Week(8-15 Nov) and events will be held across Australia celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. The theme this year is Always Was, Always Will Be. Always W...as, Always Will Be recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. NAIDOC Week 2020 acknowledges and celebrates that our nation’s story didn’t begin with documented European contact whether in 1770 or 1606 - with the arrival of the Dutch on the western coast of the Cape York Peninsula. The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country a history which dates back thousands of generations. It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. We want all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet and to recognise that our sovereignty was never ceded. For us, this nation’s story began at the dawn of time. Always Was, Always Will Be. Palmerston will be holding events across our sites this week.
