24.01.2022 Annual Darwin Harbour Clean-Up another successful day On Monday Fisheries staff assisted in the Eleventh Darwin Harbour Clean-Up organised by the Larrakia Ran...gers. This year’s Clean-Up saw nearly 200 volunteers from 27+ groups and 183+ bags of rubbish collected totalling approximately 2.099 tonnes of rubbish collected. The most common items collected were plastic bottles, broken glass/ceramics, foam, packaging and fishing line. Our Fisheries staff were operating in the Hudson Creek - Elizabeth River area and removed a boat load of old rope and abandoned crab traps. Well done to the Larrakia Rangers for organising another successful day.

23.01.2022 Will the real GT please stand up! Which fish is which? These two species are often confused, and although they come from the same family genus (Carangidae...), they have some visual differences. The giant trevally is distinguished by its steep head profile and strong tail, and is considered the bully of the sea as they are an apex predator in most habitats. It is normally a silvery colour with occasional dark spots, but males may be black once they mature. As its name suggests, the brassy trevally can appear a brassy to yellow greenish colour, becoming silvery white on the underside. Juveniles generally lack the brassy tinge, being silver all over. The species' head and body of a Brassy is slightly more elongated with a yellow or white tipped dorsal fin.

07.01.2022 How many fish can you count? The artificial reefs are in full bloom! Our researchers at NT Fisheries are putting together a full species list of the fish ...that have built their habitats at the four locations around greater Darwin. We’d be interested to hear about fish you have caught around the ARs and your experiences in the area. While you’re out there, please think before release as some species are not suitable for catch and release on the reefs.
