25.01.2022 Get to know #OpenArmsPeers Kate, reflects on how a photograph at the Australian War Memorial made a significant impact in her relationship with her father. I a...m a daughter of a Vietnam Veteran who served as a Medical Officer in the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV). I saw a 6ft photograph of my father as a medic treating a young Vietnamese girl. This photograph was significant to me because my father didn’t talk much, so when I saw his larger-than-life portrait at the Australian War Memorial, I had the sense that I was being let into a secret. I saw a different person a young man. Up to this point in my life, he hadn’t been involved in his children’s lives and he hadn’t been connected to other veterans or his service. He seemed rigid, not adaptable and was later diagnosed with PTSD. From seeing this photograph, my interest in my father and his service grew, and because I was interested in him and his service, he learned to share with me freely. This changed how I saw my father, it changed our relationship and it changed me. I joined the Army Cadets. He shared his Vietnam jokes with me, like when I returned home from a week-long bivouac and the family house was empty, he left a bar of soap with a note saying ‘wash yourself thoroughly’ so we (the family) can come back into the house! Because of my participation, my father started coming to the Anzac Day parade when he hadn’t ever before. This led to him reconnecting to old mates and he started to accept more of his Vietnam Veteran identity. From ‘The Century of Service: Vietnam War’ stamp issue, released October 2016, featuring the photo of Kate’s father in Vietnam. Some of our Peers have recently shared their experiences of visiting the Australian War Memorial, reflecting on how it has influenced their military journeys. Read more of Kate’s story from the link in our bio. #OpenArmsPeers #StrongerTogether #OpenArmsSupport #MentalHealth #YourADF #awmemorial #myawm

21.01.2022 To day the 18th of August 2020 marks the 54th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. On behalf of the family, friends and Colleagues of the fallen I would like to make this dedication. On this day the 18th August 2020 we bow our heads and remember the 18 Australian Military Force’s soldiers that were killed in action at the Battle of Long Tan. History of the Battle ... The Battle of Long Tan (18 August 1966) took place in a rubber plantation near Long Tân, in Phc Tuy Province, South Vietnam, during the Vietnam War. The action was fought between Viet Cong (VC) and People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) units and elements of the 1st Australian Task Force (1 ATF). Australian signals intelligence (SIGINT) had tracked the VC 275th Regiment and D445 Battalion moving to a position just north of Long Tan. By 16 August, it was positioned near Long Tan outside the range of the artillery at Nui Dat. On the night of 16/17 August, mortars and recoilless rifles attacked Nui Dat from a position 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) to the east until counter-battery fire caused it to cease. The next morning D Company, 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (6 RAR), departed Nui Dat to locate the firing points and the direction of the enemy withdrawal and weapon pits were found including mortars and RCLs. D Company clashed with VC around midday 18 August. Facing a larger force, D Company called down artillery. Heavy fighting ensued as the VC attempted to encircle and destroy the Australians. After several hours two UH-1B Iroquois from No. 9 Squadron RAAF arrived overhead to resupply them. Supported by strong artillery fire, D Company held off a regimental assault before a relief force of M113 armoured personnel carriers and infantry from Nui Dat reinforced them at nighttime. The Australian forces had withdrawn to evacuate their casualties and formed a defensive position overnight. The next day Australian forces swept the area though the VC had withdrawn. The operation ended on 21 August. Lest We Forget

17.01.2022 Prime Minister Scott Morrison has recommended the Queen posthumously award World War II hero Edward 'Teddy' Sheean a Victoria Cross. Tasmanian Sheean, an 18-year-old with less than two years at sea, was an Ordinary Seaman on the minesweeper HMAS Armidale when it came under heavy attack from Japanese aircraft off the coast of what is now Timor-Leste in 1942. Mr Morrison ordered an expert panel re-examine the case for Sheean receiving Australia's highest military honour afte...r earlier attempts had failed to recommend he receive a Victoria Cross. Sheean is recorded as helping launch life rafts before returning to his anti-aircraft gun to fire at enemy aircraft that were strafing his shipmates as they floundered in the water, despite the order having been given to abandon ship. Witness accounts from the day have him firing as the ship sank. He was never seen again. Mr Morrison said he had accepted the findings of the expert panel. "That there is compelling new evidence in support of higher recognition for Sheean, that Sheean was done a substantial injustice in consideration of his actions in the original decision-making period in 1942 to 1943," he said. "And Sheean's courageous sacrifice of his life to save his shipmates makes him eligible for the Victoria Cross for Australia and the highest level of recognition should be accorded in this exceptional case." Former defence minister and Australian War Memorial director Brendan Nelson chaired the expert panel. The panel also included former solicitor-general David Bennett QC, former secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Peter Shergold, and senior curator and historian at the NSW Anzac Memorial, Brad Manera. 06.01.2022 WEF 01 Dec 20 - congratulations to H1617 Ordinary Seeman Edward ‘Teddy’ Sheehan, VC. Posthumously awarded today. RIP, lest we forget On 1 December 1942, Ordinary Seaman [Teddy] Sheean, one of the youngest and most junior ranked members of Armidale’s Ship’s Company . . . decided to forgo his opportunity for survival by not abandoning ship and returning to his Action Station to man the aft Oerlikon gun . . . . Despite being wounded, he strapped himself into the gun and commenced firing at the enemy. . . .Ordinary Seaman Sheean’s actions disrupted and distracted the enemy from strafing and killing his defenceless shipmates in the water. He sacrificed his life trying to save his shipmates and, despite his wounds, he continued firing the gun until the ship sank and took him to his death.
