18.01.2022 I have come to the conclusion that there are six broad groups of Indigenous art to appreciate. Those artworks created to archive knowledge, those made for teaching, those to trade, those created for professional aesthetic pleasure, for politics and the paintings and objects made for ceremony. http://palya.com.au/aboriginal-indigenous-art-criticism/

16.01.2022 Angles and perspectives; what we see and what we miss, or realise later; it seems never ending in Australias First Peoples art. As we know, looking at painting...s can be like flying, flying like looking at paintings ... here I mention the ground & airborne lateral perspective ... amorphic inclusion and touch the aerial; itself a full topic: See more

14.01.2022 There is so much that goes on in Maningrida that is creative and industrious, culturally alert and yet apparently hidden from view at first sight. Palya Art Tours will be flying visitors to Maningrida again in July 2017. You are welcome to email me on [email protected] for more information. Please note that permits or referrals for visiting the community are still required.
13.01.2022 Dear Friends, Ive been busy uploading artwork images onto Palya Arts online gallery. Still more paintings to go on palya.com.au but thought you might like a first look at these three paintings by Mick Gill Tjakamarra from Wirrimanu, Balgo Hills. Just put on line too are two Tiwi Tungas (folded bark with edges sewn - often with pandanas grass - and traditionaly, placed over ceremonial poles) from the far northern islands; such sensitive textures and hues. Hope you enjoy them all, Helen

06.01.2022 Dear Friends, The time has come to close the Palya Art Gallery in South Melbourne. The last day the gallery will be open is Sunday 26th May. Artworks are availa...ble at attractively reduced prices in the gallery until the gallery closes. Thank you all for your wonderful, warm support of Palya Arts physical gallery over the past two years. I came down from Darwin for a few months to finish a project and, being fortunate in being offered this building (intended for demolition), for nine months, the project is now done and the builders are rumbling in across the horizon. I am returning to piloting over the North West where you can follow Palya Art & Palya Art Tours across Kimberley, Arnhem Land & Central Australia through the website blog and Online Gallery as I re-join Indigenous friends. Kind Regards, Helen Helen Read Director Palya.com.au [email protected]

01.01.2022 Palya Art features a stunning collection of hand woven baskets from Maningrida. Pictured here is a basket made by Margaret Jinjelora. Made of natural fibres the basket is 300 x 300 x 300 mm From Maningrida Arts & Culture Palya Art No: 0265HR... Price: AUD $250.00 Works in fibre from the Maningrida region are widely recognised as some of the finest in Australia. Artists confidently push the boundaries of fibre craft and cultural expression, adapting traditional techniques and forms to produce strikingly inventive and aesthetically exquisite artworks. Weaving here takes many forms: utilitarian and decorative, ceremonial and sculptural. Fibre objects include mats, baskets, dillybags and string bags; flattened wall-hanging interpretations of subject matter usually rendered on bark paintings; ceremonial regalia such as armbands and dancing belts; and the sculptural forms of conical fish traps. Commonly used fibres include the leaves of pandanus (Pandanus spiralis), and palms (Livistonus), mrlrl (burney or jungle vine, Malaisia scandens), and the inner bark of kurrajong and stringybark eucalyptus trees. Weaving is physically hard work, now done only by women. The art of fibre has a long history in Arnhem Land as evidenced by the many depictions of fibre objects in the rock art of the escarpment plateaus. There are also spiritual dimensions to weaving, which vary according to the materials used and the totemic significance of the object made. http://palya.com.au//mary-jinjelora-woven-basket-1997-man/
