14.01.2022 A 1- hour play about the consequences of childhood neglect, abuse and trauma. In the play, the expression is symbolic and metaphoric, rather than explicit. C...onsequently, there are no scenes of childhood abuse or trauma but rather a poetic, dreamlike narration by the protagonist, Pandora. This narration occurs during seven sessions with her psychiatrist, each of which presents a characteristic symptom of the abuse Pandora has suffered. An overarching theme of traumatic abuse is the desire of the victim to repeat the abusive experience time and repetition are therefore the central themes of the play. These are expressed by various incessant rhythms and resonances emphasized by the music. Seven psychiatric sessions are punctuated by the psychiatrist addressing the audience with his interpretations after which Pandora winds a clock to drive the action of the play forward. Each time she does this, she releases one of her dolls onto the stage. The central motif of the play is therefore a clock, which must be ritually wound before each act can proceed. The ticking of a clock provides the central motif for the music. This transforms into a strong beat (suggesting physical beating) each time a doll is about to appear, signifying something ominous that is about to be represented. Seven different dolls, each representing a symptom of the abuse that Pandora is suffering as an adult, enter the stage and dance. These are the seven deadly sins released from Pandoras box (her mind) by the psychiatric sessions, represented as vanity, sloth, envy, greed, gluttony, lust and anger. See more
