25.01.2022 And so it begins. From now until the end of summer I need to check zucchinis every day or they get way too big

22.01.2022 First of the berries have arrived. Much earlier than last year

22.01.2022 The roses are getting better and better. These only went in last year

21.01.2022 Garden beds are starting to fill up

21.01.2022 One of my customers gave me some tree dahlia (Dalai imperialis) cuttings. I put them in the ground yesterday just before we got a bucket load of rain. Apparently they grow more than 3 metres high and produce lots of pink flowers. Keen to see how they go. Anyone grown these before?

20.01.2022 We have been working at this property for quite a while but today was my first day back in a few months. When we started it was extremely overgrown with a range of introduced species. Lots of hard work has brought it back to an amazing bushland setting. Along the way it has reduced the fuel load and thus the bushfire risk. It has also given the room for native grasses and wildflowers to thrive.

20.01.2022 Today I met a young gardener doing an amazing job. Over the last few months he has created this great vegetable garden. Everything is thriving and I'm extremely jealous of his garlic. They will be huge by the time they are ready to harvest. Not bad for a 12 year old.

19.01.2022 Boysenberries are coming along nicely

18.01.2022 Some of you may know that as well as being great at pruning roses, Dan also has his own radio show on KISS FM. During lockdown he has recorded several shows from our backyard. It does make it tricky when I can't get to the garden to pick greens for dinner because there is a recording session going on

17.01.2022 Garden update. Everything has taken off like a rocket with all the rain and warm weather. The zucchinis are now in full production and all the greens are growing so fast we have to trim them constantly to stop them from bolting. Lots of new fruit on the Apple trees as well as pears apricots and nectarines. Over the next few weeks we will start picking boysenberries, loganberries and raspberries. We also have enough potatoes to start a fish and chip shop.

15.01.2022 This is Dan. He has been working in the gardening industry for 4 years now and is taking on a bigger role with us here at Bren’s Backyard. He’s an absolute legend with a brush cutter, and is particularly passionate about rose pruning (among all of his other wide range of talents).

13.01.2022 The wisteria is looking great at the moment

13.01.2022 Some of the seedlings are almost ready

11.01.2022 More roses coming on

11.01.2022 As things ramp up for Bren’s Backyard you might be contacted by other members of the Bren’s Backyard Family. I work behind the scenes on the administrative side of things (when I’m not working in my other job) and may be the one you hear from when scheduling in jobs or messaging on Facebook. Hi everyone

10.01.2022 100 km/h winds here last night. Lots of debris. Luckily no big trees down. Looks like we had a few roses get ripped out of the ground but otherwise all good. Anyone else get hit by the storm? Any damage?

10.01.2022 Corn is growing well

08.01.2022 If I could find a way to keep the millipedes away we will be picking this size every day

07.01.2022 GREAT NEWS!!!!!! as of tomorrow we are back up and running. We ask for your patience as we have a lot of customers who will have very overgrown gardens. Please send us a PM if you want your garden done and we will schedule you in as soon as we can.

07.01.2022 The right tool for the job. I used this rotary how to prepare this bed for one of my customers. Took about 20 mins to prepare this bed ready for spring planting. Beautiful soil, should be a very productive patch

07.01.2022 So I'm trying to get our Instagram up and running. It is certainly a different beast. If you do Insta please feel free to follow our page #brensbackyard

06.01.2022 Took this photo in a Panton hill garden this morning. These would have to be one of my favorite natives. Eucalyptus caesia

05.01.2022 New Bren's Backyard team uniforms will be arriving soon

05.01.2022 You may also see James working for Bren’s Backyard sometimes too. James is studying at Latrobe Uni, but is also joining our team for gardening jobs when he can.

05.01.2022 Should start picking zucchini in about a week

02.01.2022 Just anounced - Fire restrictions in Nilumbik and Banyule start on the 14th of December. Be aware that a bonfire can burn for several days. Never just assume that it is out. Always douse with water and then go back and check it after a few hours

01.01.2022 Late night raid on the greenhouse. I had noticed a few days ago that someone had been eating my seedlings. Over the last 3 nights I have caught 4 or 5 slugs each night.
