24.01.2022 Local resident bravely participates in Alfred Hospital safety message. Let's hope Andrea recovers fully.
24.01.2022 Bushfire Resilience Inc is running a series of informative online events this spring. This is the first.
16.01.2022 We have been advised that Yarra Valley Water is about to start work on replacing the two concrete water tanks, built in 1970, in Panton Hill with a single steel tank to store over a megalitre. It's a big one. The project will run until September next year and there should be no interruptions to water supply. Brochures will be sent to all residents with full details.
15.01.2022 BIG reflective highly visible house numbers for only $10. We can waste precious minutes on a call because we can't find a house number, particularly at night. So we're offering an at-cost solution to help us find you should an emergency occur. We can visit by (appointment) install them and have a chat about your fire preparations at the same time. Or you can collect from us on a Sunday and put them up yourself. ... Either way, send us a message if you're interested and include your house number and a phone contact.
11.01.2022 You can find full details about Bushfire Resilience webinars at their web site or their Facebook page. You can register for the webinars from both places. Our Community Safety Officer is involved in the organisation and tells us they should be very interesting and useful. http://bushfireresilience.org.au/
11.01.2022 Take note of the message from Christmas Hills. We turned out to this one but were called off before getting there.
10.01.2022 Restrictions on public gatherings have been relaxed a bit for CFA training purposes. Having been locked down like everybody for the last three months we are eager to refresh our skills before the summer fire season is upon is. So you may see us, or may have seen us, no more than 10 at a time and all blue-masked, out and about a bit again.

05.01.2022 The Royal Commission into last summer's fires has released its report. Here's a sobering extract. "Natural disasters have changed, and it has become clear to us that the nation’s disaster management arrangements must also change. Extreme weather has already become more frequent and intense because of climate change; further global warming over the next 20 to 30 years is inevitable.... Globally, temperatures will continue to rise, and Australia will have more hot days and fewer cool days. Sea levels are also projected to continue to rise. Tropical cyclones are projected to decrease in number, but increase in intensity. Floods and bushfires are expected to become more frequent and more intense. Catastrophic fire conditions may render traditional bushfire prediction models and firefighting techniques less effective. Natural disasters are expected to become more complex, more unpredictable, and more difficult to manage. We are likely to see more compounding disasters on a national scale with far-reaching consequences. Compounding disasters may be caused by multiple disasters happening simultaneously, or one after another. Some may involve multiple hazards fires, floods and storms. Some have cascading effects threatening not only lives and homes, but also the nation’s economy, critical infrastructure and essential services, such as our electricity, telecommunications and water supply, and our roads, railways and airports. Australia needs to be better prepared for these natural disasters. They may not happen every year, but when they happen, they can be catastrophic. The summer of 2019-20 in which some communities experienced drought, heatwaves, bushfires, hailstorms and flooding provided only a glimpse of the types of events that Australia may face in the future."
