23.01.2022 Some time ago I acquired a very special piece of material. A large rough sawn block of pink Morganite from Minas Gerias, Brazil. This piece came to Australia many years ago and has been hidden away in a private collection ever since. At first glance this block appeared to be full of cracks and bubbles. Nothing more than a curious display piece. However, after several weeks of very careful inspection it became apparent that there was some stones to be won from deep inside. I... began by very carefully cutting along the major fissures and slowly dismantled the crystal into more manageable pieces. From there I trimmed each piece and isolated as much useable material as possible. I was dismayed to find that the wonderful rich pink colour didn’t hold in many of the smaller stones cut from the outer edges of the block. Though still exhibiting a nice pink undertone, the word class saturated Morganite pink eluded me. That was until I removed a sizable clouded zone a month later. Hidden below it was a very large, exceptionally clean and rich pink chunk. I concluded that this piece must have been the colour centre within the crystal that caused the block to appear so saturated. After isolating the colour centre I spent several more days pouring over my designs, looking to find one that was simple, high performing and would deliver the best yield for the shape of the rough. I settled on one of my recent custom designs. A stunning pentagon shape I’ve titled House of Cards pentagon. This cut is one of my Valais Crown cuts. These are a series of five different shapes all sporting the same crown design principles. The finished stone weighs in at a ridiculous 47 carats, untreated natural and is almost entirely flawless.

18.01.2022 I love seeing beautiful finished gems but rough crystals really catch my eye. Each piece of rough is a blank canvas. Thousands of different shapes, designs and angles to consider. Gem cutting is what I call Precision Creativity. This is a very clean piece of Swiss Smoky. This stone has exceptional optical clarity, dark saturation and a well presented stepped "skin". I found this great piece tucked away in a trinket shop in Interlaken, Switzerland. The lovely lady behind the ...counter was a personal friend of the elderly Strahler who mined the crystal. I plan on meeting him on my next trip. Just need to brush up on my German a bit!

10.01.2022 Swiss Rauchqaurtz. (Smoky Quartz) Swiss alpine Smoky Quartz is easily some of the finest Smoky's in the world and some of the most difficult to mine. Strahlers often risk it all hiking deep into the Alps hunting for these georgeous stones. Unlike the smooth Brazilian Smoky's the Swiss raw crystals often have a geometric, stepped "skin". ... This glorious piece is cut in a modified rectangle barion design and is flawless. Barion designs are defined by half moon Girdle facets, Mains meeting at the pavilion point and Break facets meeting elsewhere. I modified the design so the mains and breaks meet. This required deepening the pavillion. The result speaks for itself!

09.01.2022 This little piece is a 3.7 carat Harts Range zircon. The rough was quite a dark shiraz colour which is not common from this area as many zircons are either too light or completely red.

01.01.2022 What a find! This is a 17.7 carat topaz cut into a triangle barrion design. The original stone was very much the same shape and around 42 carats. This particular stone was one of the very few easy wins I have experienced thus far. First day of a eight day fossicking trip and this little beauty was just sitting right on the surface of a little gravel bar ten steps from the car. Most finds require days of hard digging and sieve after sieve of worthless dirt.
