Donna Catharina (1593-1613) is a Karava princes who became the sole heiress of Sri Lanka when her father Karau-liyadde Bandara who ruled Senkadagala from 1579 to 1581 as king Jayaweera III, passed away from small pox. At her deathbed, she appointed her relative, Karava Prince Kuruvita Bandara (Antonio Baretto) as the custodian of her surviving children. . , , , . This old drawing illustrates the funeral procession of her son Prince Mahasthana. Note the royal parasols (muthu kuda), alawattam, flags and weapons carried in the procession as still done by the Karava people of Sri Lanka, even now. , . . Her other two sons Kumarasingha and Vijayapala married two daughters of king Pararajasekaram from the Karava royal dynasty of Jaffna. Incidentally when the three sons of Kotte's king Vijayabahu fled from their kingdom, they went to the Karava Patabenda in Jaffna for protection.
