12.01.2022 Did you know? That across Australia 39% of spinal cord injuries each year are from land transport crashes? This includes motorcycles, motor vehicles and cyclists. ParaQuad Tasmania are proud to partner with MAIB to provide an interactive and dynamic education program aimed at increasing awareness for young people on making wise choices on the roads. BodySafe is a free program provided by ParaQuad Tasmania to schools and colleges statewide. The BodySafe Education Program is a...n interactive and dynamic program aimed at students between years 8-12 and is carefully aligned with the Australian Curriculum (Health). The program discusses risk taking behaviours and the prevention of spinal cord injury and physical trauma (such as motorcycle and car accidents or risk-taking decisions). Our presenters who deliver the program have an an acquired spinal cord injury and use their own stories throughout the presentation as a springboard for student engagement, allowing them to critically examine the key issues. Using this approach, our program encourages students to discuss difficult topics, think about their own choices as well as thinking flexibly and developing solutions in a group environment. Standard group sizes are usually approx. 20-30 students. However, our presenters are also able to cater to assemblies and large groups. The program can vary depending on the size of your group, so please speak with us prior to booking in regards to the most suitable group size for your situation and requirements. 07.01.2022 Inclusive Playground Now Open $42,160 was received from the Tasmanian Community Fund to install play equipment pieces designed to develop children’s physical, social, cognitive and sensory abilities. An additional $6,000 was contributed by the Rotaract Club of Central Coast and $4,000 from the Devonport Rotary Club. Council provided $45,000 towards the project. The inclusive playground became a reality thanks to community members and organisations who approached Council reque...sting installation of all-abilities play equipment. After an assessment to determine the best location for the inclusive playground, the Bluff was chosen due to its high utilisation and existing accessible supporting infrastructure. Mayor Rockliff said, The Bluff playground has always been a popular spot for families to come together and the addition of inclusive play equipment will only enhance that experience. Consultation with key disability stakeholders such as the Association of Children with Disability (Tas), Devonfield Enterprises and the School of Special Education North-west, determined the most suitable equipment to be included in the playground an all-inclusive carousel, tipi spinner with top brace and a hillside with a slide and tunnel. Mayor Rockliff said the installation of this equipment will provide opportunities for children with and without disabilities to play, grow and learn together. The inclusive playground will provide a richer environment for children in the Mersey region, plus visitors to the coast, and offer a space that allows more people to actively participate and engage in the community. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the project, either through funding or through consultation, for helping to make it a reality.
