20.01.2022 What are you working on in your ride tomorrow? How're you going to structure the session? At what point will you stop? How will that fit into your weekly plan?... Do you have a clear and easy answer to these questions? If you don't (and most people don't!), you're missing a huge opportunity. I promise that having a clear structure to your training week, without even changing anything about how you're riding, will completely change your rate of progress. How do you know if you have a good strategy, structure and system? If your weekly riding plan or structure isn't rock solid, you're probably feeling a little lost with your training. You might be riding around and putting miles on your horse and not really having a very clear idea of what you need to achieve, when and how. You're also probably riding around in what I call grocery shopping mode...wandering about randomly choosing exercises and forgetting what you're meant to be doing in the first place. One of the big indicators is... you're not completely confident in what and how you're training when you're not in front of an instructor/coach. What having a system and a strategy will mean for you is that every single ride is constructive, even when you’re on your own without an instructor. You’ll have a clear path forward and a good idea each ride of what you want to achieve. Even the bad rides will be part of this new system! You’ll feel educated about what you’re doing and that you’re not holding your horse back. So let’s talk about developing a strategy for the structure of your training. I’d like you to commit to putting in place a weekly training plan. Each weekly plan should be in alignment with your monthly and yearly goals. You can always shift focus where need be, but if you don’t start with a plan in mind, you’ll probably literally end up going around in circles. The key to a productive weekly plan is a healthy mixture of the 3 core sessions - work on the basics work on training new knowledge into the horse work on the competition lines and preparations. If you can fit it in, an in-hand or lunging day is useful, and a fun day is a great addition also. At the risk of making this post even longer than it is (!)... I'll leave that topic there and I'll be back soon with the breakdown of my weekly training schedule. Keen to learn more at a free workshop? If you'd like to learn more about how to put a training plan in place, plus loads more, come along to my free online workshop this week! I'll be there live and we'll be teaching some smart strategies to remain flexible and keep progressing with our riding in 2021. Register at https://theparberyprogram.com/dressage-success-formula/
14.01.2022 My 2020 Review and Plans for 2021... Well, 2020 presented some challenges, didn't it! For me, the year started in the midst of my recovery from an injury that had me out of the saddle for a few months. ... Then the bushfires hit our little town and we were consumed with protecting our property and helping our neighbours. Then, of course, COVID meant no travelling, so none of my usual clinics, and hardly any competitions. So all in all, it was a difficult year in which to build momentum. However, like many others, I also found in 2020 an opportunity to regroup and consider my priorities. This was timely for me because I needed to rethink, or perhaps reinvent, my identity. You see, I’d gone from riding lots and lots of horses, and winning big shows, to scaling right back to a very small operation at our home base. I’ll be honest, it was tough. I had to spend some time reflecting on what I have to offer the horse community and beyond, and how that is tied to being a high profile and prolific rider and trainer. What I learned was that the most satisfying, and important, work that I do is supporting, coaching and mentoring other riders. And for me, this work is already in place in The Parbery Program, which was a hands-down highlight of 2020. I enjoy every minute of this program, I love watching people succeed through hard work and great support. For me, that’s what’s kept me going and has helped me see what the Parbery brand really is all about helping riders to enjoy their sport, find their personal path to success, and to see the whole standard of the sport improve. So now, at the beginning of 2021, I’m grateful that we’re still here, still enjoying our property and the horses, and the only thing that’s going to change is that I’m going to double down on everything I’ve learned is important to focus on! We’re doubling down on the Parbery Program, refining what we offer and helping more riders, and having more fun! And I’m doubling down on my skill as a rider. Never stop improving! I’d love to hear about your reflections of 2020, and your vision for 2021.
