22.01.2022 VicHealth and Deakin University have completed a study of 50 toddler formula milk brands, their ingredients and cost implications for families. As well as being higher in sugar and cost, having a large intake of milk can definitely have an impact on a toddler’s eating. I regularly see toddlers who are fussy with their food but still drinking 2 or more bottles of milk per day. Children over the age of 12 months can transition to plain cows milk as a drink (if no cows milk al...lergy) and definitely have the skills to drink out of a cup by then. Dairy is filling and toddlers don't need more than 500 mls/mg of dairy per day. This is including yoghurt, milk, cheese etc. Limiting dairy leaves space in small tummies for other nutrients such as iron and fibre. In extreme cases, an excess intake of milk can cause iron-deficiency anemia in children. The action of drinking from a bottle as well as the higher sugar intake also poses a risk to a toddler’s dental health. This could be especially true if a toddler is drinking the milk as they are falling asleep, as the milk pools around the teeth and is not washed off. If you are concerned about your toddler's milk intake, don't hesitate to speak to your Maternal & Child Health Nurse for support. 19.01.2022 This pandemic and lockdown 2.0 here in Victoria, is really impacting parents, their mood and coping. There is some good news however... People impacted by the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic are being offered some extra mental health support. 10 additional sessions with a mental health worker (GP, psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker) have been added to the existing Mental Health Care Plan scheme. The additional Medicare subsidised sessions will allow people in eli...gible areas, who have used their first 10 sessions, to continue to receive mental health support through this challenging time. This may not be able to done face-to-face at the moment, but many practitioners are offering online sessions and these are still rebateable via Medicare. Support has never been more accessible! So if you need it, book a telehealth appointment with your GP and ask them for a Mental Health Care Plan . . #gottogetthroughthis #mentalhealth #keepingitreal #mentalhealthsupport #makingsenseofthemess #psychologyisawesome #everyoneneedsatherapist #pareting #selfcare #copingskills #parentinginapandemic #sendhelp #telehealth #melbourne #melbourneparents #lockdown2.0

19.01.2022 {Touch} ’what my baby needs’ series Babies need touch. They have a biological need to be held close to their caregivers and feel safe and secure when in contact with their parent’s body. ... Young babies don't actually know that they are separate beings yet! Each touch, each nappy change, each handling, affects the development of connections an infant’s brain. This comes at the time of fastest cognitive growth in this small person's lifetime! Gentle touch promotes calmness in an infant and helps to lower their stress hormone cortisol. Skin to skin contact can be particularly effective. It can help regulate a baby’s breathing and temperature, enhance your ability to read their cues and help them to calm regulate themselves. Don't forget feeding time either. In the early days, this may be the only time your baby spends awake, so make the most of it! Hold your baby during feeding, gently touch them and stroke them. It’s great for them and also releases ’feel-good’ hormones in your brain too! #winwin #whatyourbabyneeds #parentprep #babiesneedtouch #infantfeeding #buildingbabiesbrains #touchislearning #babycare #babycues #gettingtoknowyourbaby #skintoskin #secureattachment #4thtrimester #parenting #responsiveparenting

02.01.2022 Far out.. I've come across some REALLY TIRED parents in the past few weeks There are so many sensory demands at the moment, work (maybe from home), keeping small people entertained inside the house, worry and anxiety about Covid and financial and sometimes relationship strain It's NO WONDER WE’RE ALL TIRED!... Self-care is so important right now Find something really simple you can do during the day. Maybe a cup of tea in the backyard, an episode of something trashy on TV, an audio book playing in the background or a lovely warm bath in the evening And if you're partnered, help each other other out to achieve this Let's take care of ourselves #youcantpourfromanemptycup #parenting #selfcare #parentprep
