23.01.2022 "It is important to acknowledge that family is relevant to all employees; we are all part of a family; someone’s child, and in various ways, we are all involved in the care of significant people. No longer is family viewed in the nuclear, gender-normed sense. Men, women and non-binary people, should have the right and ability to take care of the people in their lives." ~ Emma Walsh, CEO, Parents At Work. 20.01.2022 Research tells us that when there is a social movement happening, a crisis often accelerates the movement. For example, before the second world war women were gradually moving into the workplace and the war pushed that on and I think we are witnessing a similar thinking in men’s involvement in childcare, ~ Adrienne Burgess, joint chief executive of the Fatherhood Institute. This article from The Guardian highlights the Covid-shift we are now experiencing with many fathers... working from home and spending more time with their children. Could this be the new norm for working families? #FlexibleWork #GenderEquity #ParentalEquality

15.01.2022 Why is ‘Family Friendly’ so important when it comes to the future of work? Results from our recent Pulse Survey have revealed 81% of participants say ‘balancing work and family’ is the number one challenge as a working parent. Second to this was ‘my own mental health and wellbeing.’ Being mostly a team of working parents ourselves and on the ground in the industry every day, these results were not to us at all surprising. ... There is only one direction for workplaces to move and that is towards creating family friendly policies and practices including gender equal parental leave and flexible work options. 14.01.2022 "Australia urgently needs to review the way we support families to raise children and to work - Covid has made visible the struggle many parents endure to bridge the work and home divide. With uncertainty around ongoing access to affordable child care for the foreseeable future, a highly gendered PPL scheme that doesn't encourage shared care, and a tax disincentive to work more hours...it's little wonder parents and parents-to-be think it's all too hard." ~ Emma Walsh, CEO Parents At Work, in response to the latest considerations by the Federal government. #Childcare #ParentalLeave #ParentsAtWork

12.01.2022 Affordability of child care looms as one of the key issues facing working parents as we look to rebuild the Australian economy through COVID, Alison Kitchen, KPMG Australia Chair says. Too often, those who want to contribute more to household income find themselves looking at an insufficient financial reward from taking on extra work, once out of pocket child care costs are deducted. This occurs across all family income levels, as our modelling shows." A further confirmati...on that our current childcare system has a way to go when it comes to supporting Australian working families. #ChildCareAustralia #ParentsAtWork

10.01.2022 Australia doesn’t have a work and family policy framework. It’s dispersed across government department, with different employers doing different; nothing is being done in a coordinated way and that needs to change. We have a unique opportunity to capitalise (on the strength of feeling arising from the pandemic). We have to galvanize that. 06.01.2022 On the one year anniversary since ING Australia became the first bank in Australia to significantly shake up its paid parental leave policy, the company has announced a fourfold increase in ING dads taking more than two weeks’ leave since August 2019. The company have also released new research surveying 400 parents who have been on parental leave during the pandemic, with three q...uarters of them women. 01.01.2022 Earlier this week our CEO Emma Walsh was interview by ABC Radio National on the subject of equal care in raising children. "The way that we think about family traditionally has been a mum and a dad and very much around one taking on the lions share of child rearing and the other one doing a lot of the earning, and I just don't think that that's the society we live in anymore." In this interview you will hear from a married couple who talk about the fact that they are giving ...equal care a shot, but it's not without its challenges. #AustraliaTalks #RadioNational #ParentsAtWork
