06.01.2022 Why an Image of Possum would be Appropriate as Silo Art at Paringa Consideration of potential images for silo art at Paringa should include David Jones more c...ommonly known as Possum. The Possum story is now firmly entrenched in Australian bush legend folklore. His unique story of survival as a lone hermit living along the banks of the Murray for 53 years without permanent shelter and with few possessions is a remarkable one. David James Jones, a shearer born in New Zealand in 1901, came to Australia during the depression period in1928 seeking work. It was at Lake Victoria Station between Renmark and Wentworth where Jones was refused work because his union ticket was not paid up. Subsequently he was refused free rations in Wentworth because he had no fixed address. This was the last straw for Jones, he was hurt and bitter and went bush where he lived off the land for the next 53 years before his body was found near Lock 8 in 1982. David Jones shunned society, was elusive and avoided human contact earning the name Possum and becoming a bush legend of the modern era. Renmark and Wentworth are towns linked by the Murray River and a myriad of backwaters gave Possum a food source and many hides where he could not be seen. Although he travelled up and down the Murray, deep into Victoria and as far as the Murray mouth, the area between Renmark and Wentworth was where he spent most of his time. He frequented the upper reaches of the river above Renmark where he formed a tenuous relationship with local detective, Max Jones, who sought Possum out for brief conversations every few years mostly to check on his well being. Possum Country is book-ended by the townships of Renmark and Wentworth. While there is a statue of Possum at Wentworth, silo art at Paringa would be a wonderful opportunity to complete the book end of Possum’s territory. Additionally, as the silos are adjacent to a major national highway the silo art would be a wonderful way to bring the story of Possum to a much wider audience. Wentworth is more remote and less visited. There is also the capacity to value add to the tourism experience of the Possum silo art with a small interpretive centre centred on the Possum story. There is an amount of Possum memorabilia in private hands which could add interest to such an interpretive centre. This would further encourage travellers to not merely admire the silo art as they passed by but to stop and visit the centre and of course visit the towns of Renmark and Paringa. The burgeoning phenomenon of silo art to date tends to feature images of a local generic nature. A silo commemorating a real Australian bush legend with a unique story would enhance and differentiate the Paringa silos. Paul Clancy

02.01.2022 An another amazing silo artwork in the making! This steam train, painted by artist Tim Bowtell, represents the agricultural history of the area around Colbinabb...in in central Victoria. In the mid-1800s, German settlers established farms in the region, but needed a railway to get their produce to market. They lobbied for a railway to reach Melbourne and in 1913, they got their wish. The first grain trucks left Colbinabbin Railway Station in February 1914. + info: Colbinabbin Silo Art Trail
