25.01.2022 ~ Hoof Maintenance ~ Never underestimate the importance of healthy, well shaped hooves. Help keep your horse sound with these simple steps! ... Ensure your horses hooves are trimmed / shoed regularly. Oil their hooves (I use the kohnkes Own hoof seal twice a week) This conditions hooves in the dry to prevent cracking and helps seal them from wet weather. Ensure you condition under the hoof as well, including the frog! Feed biotin for hoof growth and strengthening. Hoof seal and biotin supplements are available from Horseland Bundaberg

22.01.2022 Very proud of this kid, these two have come so far in the past few months

22.01.2022 OVER RUGGING I know it's overcast.... wet... and muddy..... and more rain is coming. But people, please consider your horse's rugging needs. Im actually sick ...to my gut of driving around and seeing heavy rugs on horses in this weather. Its 29 and the humidity is vile. I worked this horse for 20 mins at a light trot and this was the result. Imagine what those poor buggers standing there in their sweaty synthetics and heavy winter rugs are feeling! Don't use the excuse you left them on when you left for work.... take them off!!! If you have to get wet rugging them in the pouring rain after work, so be it. They come first. Always. Here's what we know for sure.... Horses are waterproof. Rain won't make them shrink. RUGS don't stop them growing coats.... the shorter days do. There are any number of online articles and information available to you in regards to over rugging and how horses can regulate their body temperatures. Read them and be vigilant. If you can't be bothered to unrug your horses in the heat, chances are, you probably can't be bothered checking the facts. So, here's a handful for you to start... Or perhaps just read the comments below from all these smart and educated horse owners https://www.oakhill-vets.com/dangers-over-rugging/ https://www.google.com/url

12.01.2022 -G O A L S- Set goals, work hard towards them, nail it and repeat. And the goals don’t have to be big!

12.01.2022 Through the week I did something different and put my hacking hat on for the Bundaberg Show. I got the ride on Jo’s beautifuls mare ‘Waltzing Malitla’ for her first show. Considering the minimal preparation she had, she worked amazing to take home 3rd in the novice hack, 2nd in the open hack and 1st in the pleasure hack. Jo Jo

08.01.2022 Dicky Ticker and I cruising around the CCN1* at the very wet Fig Tree Pocket over the weekend. He jumped like a champ both showjump and cross country, unfortunately just not having the dressage test we needed.

06.01.2022 Winter Rugging As we approach the cooler months our rugging regime changes, below are some handy tips on rugging. If you cannot take winter rugs off in the morning DO NOT PUT THEM ON AT NIGHT. It’s much better for a horse to be cooler at night than cooking through the day - they handle being cool better than being hot. ... Rugging does not stop winter coats growing - the day length affects horses coats. What rug to use? There are many different types of rugs to choose. But let’s try to keep it simple! For horses in paddocks I recommend waterproof rugs, this keeps everything dry from the morning dew. - waterproofs come in different thickness, generally light / Medium / Heavy (much like doonas). - For the Bundaberg climate I’d recommend a light and medium thickness waterproof rug. - Use a correct thickness according to the temp. - Every horse is different, some will naturally be warmer and won’t need as much rugs. - Wool is much warmer than polar fleece. - as the nights start to get a little cooler, but not cold enough for a rain sheet, I put two summers sheets on at night time. - Basic Guide for what to use at temperatures: 17-20 degrees - double cotton 14-17 degrees - cotton and light waterproof. 10-14 degrees - cotton and Medium waterproof under 9 degrees - heavy waterproof or a wool with a medium waterproof. Layering rugs - Try to keep less layers of rugs. Horses tend to get sour when using multiple rugs. Choose warmer rugs rather than lots of lighter rugs.

02.01.2022 Warwick CCNS-1* Had a chilly weekend in Warwick competing at their event with just Dicky Ticker in the 1* class. Super happy with how he performed and improved from the last event. Pulling off a PB dressage test for 69%, very bold around the cross country (rider just going too slow, so gained too many time penalties ) and a lovely showjump with one little error. Now off to Fig Tree Pocket in 2 weeks for their CIC event - where my new goal is try make time cross country. ... Of course big thanks to Horseland for keeping us looking great.
