24.01.2022 Come to Kiama this Wednesday the 4th at 3.00pm - it's the first birthday party for this friendly scenic growers' market on the harbour. Lots of prize hampers to be won, even some PH garlic! And put March 8 in the diary for a visit to the magnificant Grow Cook Eat festival at Bundanoon - Google it !

22.01.2022 Well the great garlic dig up of 2015 is underway, and the garlic is looking wonderful: the extra rainfall with intermittent warm days has obviously done wonders, and the bulbs are sweet and succulent. Over the next couple of weeks, family and friends will help dig, carry, bundle and hang our precious crop. Watch this space for info on how to buy, and looking forward to seeing you at the markets.

21.01.2022 This is why we should not eat imported fresh produce. Here is an example of the system of fumigation used on imported food. Behind the wall on the left is an opening to the container, through which a forklift brings in pallet loads of the produce e.g. garlic. The container is sealed and methyl bromide (45 times more harmful to the atmosphere than fluorocarbons)is pumped in under pressure. It is also extracted, but even the manufacturer of the system says "virtually" all is removed. Not for me thanks!

20.01.2022 National Trust garden fair day at Harper's Mansion Berrima on Sunday. Having fun as kick off guest speaker on (what else?) garlic - myth and legend, history, health benefits and cultivation. Lots of interest too.

19.01.2022 At Kiama Growers' market tomorrow afternoon - just love it: such a beautiful venue and such friendly people! And a home made chilli con carne pie with sour cream, with a fresh hot flat white, just makes the day!

19.01.2022 It was a wonderful day at the Bundanoon Community Garden "Grow Cook Eat Festival" yesterday: superb local produce, fresh food and an unsurpassed feeling of belonging. Park Hill Garlic will be at Bowral Public School market this Saturday the 14th, so do come - it is the end of the Ozzie garlic season now & I've already planted 500 plants for the new season - only 15,000 to go!

19.01.2022 Ollie in construction mode and voila! the Park Hill garlic bespoke garlic curing system. The great garlic dig up starts tomorrow!

18.01.2022 Was working alongside the turbo-charged 19 year old dynamo who was on garlic digging detail today, when he said, "Yer a pretty good worker.." Me: "and I'm old enough to be your grandma too". Him: "But yer a bit skinny - Yer wanna get some meat on ya!" I took it as a great compliment!

14.01.2022 The scapes tell the story.... our garlic at Park HIll, is the species Allium sativum Ophioscorodon, variety Rocombole. Of all the garlic in cultivation today, it is the variety closest to the original wild garlic. It is identified by the broad blue -green leaves, the development of a "flower stem", (scape, or hard neck) which forms into a full circle, as opposed to just a curve, and the most magnificent full sweet flavour. It is the garlic sought by Michelin chefs. The do...wnside is that it has a short season, from December until April at the latest, in SE Oz, so if you find a source, you need to be quick, becuse once gone, that's it for another year.. Most of the garlic produced in the world is "soft neck" , artichoke or silverskin variety. We grow that too: it is a later variety, with excellent keeping properties and will last without sprouting until next August. Grown in a Moss Vale Winter, it has a strong rich flavour, but without the sweet complexity of flavour of the Rocombole. Harvest wil start in a couple of weeks and the Park Hill family has been at full strength, building a new curing structure inside the old hayshed (pics coming!_ See more

13.01.2022 The Grow Cook Eat festival is on at Bundanoon this Sunday, the 8th, at Quest for Life in Ellsmore Road. I'll be there with Park Hill Garlic and will be doing a short guest speaker presso as well. Do come if you can, it will be a magic day with stalls galore, of beautiful fresh locally grown food and information. It's just about the end of the garlic season, so take a last opportunity to get some organically grown Park Hill garlic before the 2015 planting starts.

10.01.2022 And as Tony says, Park Hill Garlic will be there in force!! So excited for Moss Vale to be starting our own farmers' market, a lovely echo of the long farming history of our town. My family, the Throsbys, tried growing wheat here in the 19thC, then sheep, pigs, and for a long time had a dairy. They'd never heard of garlic though, and the climate and soil here is perfect for it. Please encourage everyone to come to our first market on the 28th!

10.01.2022 Welcome to the 2016 Park Hill Garlic harvest!! Hoping to be at Kiama the next two Wednesdays - watch this space for confirmation!!

09.01.2022 Park Hill garlic will be at Moss Vale market this Saturday and Bundanoon on Sunday, as well as Kiama Growers' the following Wednesday afternoon, the 4th March. Do try to visit us on one of these days - Margie and Sue would love to see you. It's nearly planting time for the 2015 crop, so hop in quickly while this year's garlic lasts! Also don't forget the Grow Cook Eat Festival on March 8th at Bundanoon Community Garden - Margie will have the garlic there and will also be a guest speaker on the morning, along with Hugh McKay and lots of other great speakers and demos. Be there!

08.01.2022 On Sunday there were cracks in the ground in the garlic paddock - close to a disaster when the plants are just busy making their beautiful juicy bulbs. Today, 30mms of rain, and still raining. I guess God likes garlic.......

06.01.2022 Exeter market in the Southern Highlands is reopening this Saturday, the 7th. Park Hill Garlic will be there, with our dear friend Sue Kingsford with her gorgeous heritage roses. Do come and say g'day - it is the most beautiful venue: an old English style oval with lovely craft, fresh produce and plants stalls set out under the big old trees. My friend Jane Newson will be there with her lovely "Black and White" items. There's a market cafe with fresh coffee and home made goodies too.www.exetervillagemarket.com

05.01.2022 The garlic harvest has been underway for a week. Go to parkhillgarlic.com.au, to the blog heading. You can see the little video Ollie has made, of Rotarian friends and family all pitchiing in. Hard work and great fun!

04.01.2022 Here's a shot of the top end of this year's Rocombole crop, galloping towards harvest. (thanks in-law John Swainston, Alexx's Dad, for being the official Park HIll photographer!) You can see the beautiful elegant scapes curling over and the lower leaves gradually browning off. Harvest will start next week, then the hanging and curing process will be well underway. It'll be all hands on deck for a week or so.

04.01.2022 This is not garlic!!!! If someone tells you they are growing magnificant, huge garlic be suspicious - it is Allium ampeloprasum, or "elephant garlic", actually a type of leek. While quite pleasant to use like onions, it does not have true garlic flavour and none of the health benefits, so don't be persuaded to pay lots of money for it!

02.01.2022 So looking forward to being at Kiama again tomorrow. Have started planting the new crop, but there's just enough of this year's left for the market this week and perhaps next. I have some of the white variety, Artichoke, which will keep through until at least August, and has a lovely strong garlic flavour. Right hand woman Anne is a talented garlic farmer too!
