25.01.2022 Happy WORLD Cat Day! Roll out the red carpet and the catnip for your furry feline friend, because World Cat Day is that one day a year when black cats bring good luck and your cat gets to rule the household.....as if they don't already!! Please share your cat pics below so we can celebrate all things feline on this special day!!

25.01.2022 Today and every year on the second Thursday of September we recognise RU OK DAY at PRAH as a matter of importance. Did you know that Veterinarians are four times more likely to die by suicide when compared to the general population? Our industry loses a vet to suicide about every 12 weeks which we keep at the forefront of our minds as we navigate through the ups and downs of our everyday work caring for animals and their families. 2020 has been a challenging year for ever...yone and circumstances have made it even more important for us all to stay connected and, for those who are able, be willing to support those around us. Today is the day to ask those around us R U OK? ~ a meaningful conversation really can save a life. #wesharethecare #ruok

24.01.2022 Pet-safe festive foods ~ The do's and don'ts Many of us want to involve our furry family member in Christmas celebrations - and festive meals are no exception! But do you know which foods are pet-safe and which can be dangerous? In the Christmas spirit, we’ve coded some common yuletide foods as green or red. Green foods = safe ... Unless your pet has food sensitivities/allergies, these foods are generally safe if given freshly cooked, in small quantities: Turkey meat, particularly the white meat - and remember to remove the fatty skin. Fish e.g. salmon. Prawns (ensure the shell and gut are removed). Vegetables, such as potato, pumpkin, sweet potato, carrots, peas. Red foods = dangerous These foods can be toxic or dangerous to pets! Turkey stuffing - can contain onion and garlic (toxic ). Ham Including Ham Bone - high-fat content (can trigger pancreatitis). Smoked salmon - high fat & salt content (can be harmful for pets with high blood pressure, heart disease, or kidney disease). Christmas pudding or mince pies - contain sultanas/raisins (toxic). Chocolate or cacao - contains theobromine (toxic). Coffee beans - contain caffeine (toxic). Foods sweetened with xylitol (toxic). Grapes (toxic). Bones often break into sharp splinters, which can cause mouth injuries, broken teeth or gut obstructions. #wesharethecare

24.01.2022 What is in those carriers that have our Nurses so intrigued? What's your guess?

24.01.2022 Take your Cat to the Vet Day! Cat owners put your hand up if you get nervous when you have to take your cat to the vet? We feel your pain. Even some of our very own team members struggle with a trip into work with their cats (not mentioning any names, Nurse Kate and Nurse Georgette!) ... Given today is Take Your Cat To the Vet Day, thought we'd share our top tips for travelling to the vet with your feline friends: Make sure your cat has a proper cat cage to travel in. It helps them feel much more secure than travelling in a box. Stay as calm as possible, as cats pick up on and mimic our stress. Bring one of your cats favourite toys or blankets. Unless your cat has to eat for a medical reason, it is generally a good idea to withhold food on the morning of a visit as many blood tests and procedures require fasting. Let your vet know before your visit if your cat gets nervous. Forward planning can help to make the trip as stress-free as possible. #wesharethecare

21.01.2022 TOP TICK TIPS Did you know that our cats and dogs can be exposed to ticks even if they never leave their yard? Backyard bandits like possums and bandicoots, or for those on property, wallabies and kangaroos, can bring ticks into your pets environment. We can even bring ticks home on our clothing ~ so even if your pet never leaves home, they can still fall prey to the paralysis tick.... Ticks hide in long grass, scrubs and shrubs, leaf litter and even foliage off-cuts left around the yard. As well as ALWAYS having your pets on regular and efficient tick prevention, here are some tips to minimise ticks about the yard: Minimise or restrict your pets access to bushy environments Clean up leaf litter regularly Clear tall grass from around the house and lawn Keep grass mowed where possible and mow frequently If trimming trees and hedges about the yard, discard of all trimmings immediately, do not store on your property where your pets have access. Be aware. Check your pets DAILY for paralysis ticks. Keep Tick Prevention UP TO DATE. #wesharethecare

21.01.2022 SANTA PAWS It is with great disappointment that we announce Santa Paws will not be visiting PRAH this year. As you all know our annual Santa Paws event is extremely popular, bringing many people to the hospital making for a very busy afternoon. Sadly, our Covid Safe Plan does not allow for such a large number of people inside the building at one time. ... We feel that we have adapted so well to all else that 2020 has thrown at us, which is why this decision was not an easy one to make. We know that this event will be greatly missed by our loyal clients who line up to see Santa each year. Below is a list of alternative locations offering Pet Friendly sittings with Santa. 21.01.2022 Summer = Storms and Fireworks! If loud noises make your pet anxious, summer storms and New Year's Eve fireworks can unfortunately be a terrifying time. For mild cases of noise phobia, it may be enough to protect your dog or cat from the noise by giving them a safe place to shelter. It’s best to keep them indoors whenever possible during these times (preferably with a familiar human friend nearby), as many pets get injured or lost when they make panicked escape attempts.... During loud events, we suggest the following for any noise-phobic pet: Close your blinds or curtains. Try playing soft, soothing music or white noise to help mask outside sounds. Create a safe hiding spot for your pet in a cupboard, behind a couch, or in their crate, with some blankets or a quilt for them to snuggle under. Apply a calming pheromone spray to your pet’s bedding. Spray brands include Feliway for cats and Adaptil for dogs. Offer your pet some tasty chew treats or puzzle/food-based toys (e.g. a Kong filled with peanut butter), but don’t force it if your pet is too nervous to eat. Calmly comfort your pet if they come to you for reassurance. Never punish your pet for being afraid, destructive or for having toileting accidents during these times - punishing them will only worsen their fear. If your pet still seems scared despite these supportive measures, or if they seem anxious about other things too, we advise consulting one of our vets for advice. Pets with moderate-to-severe noise phobia or anxiety benefit most from starting anti-anxiety medication and a program of behavioural modification to calm their excessive response to noise. Ask one of our friendly vets if you have any further questions about noise phobia in your pet. #wesharethecare

20.01.2022 We Have Exciting News!! Although 2020 has been a tough year, with plenty to navigate, we are pleased with how we have adapted and evolved, not only in response to the world around us, but also within the ranks of our own team. For us, 2020 will also be known as the year that Park Ridge Animal Hospital and Browns Plains Vet Hospital welcomed two new partners into the business. Dr Sheena White and Dr Sasha Savage have signed on as official business partners of our 2 practices.... Most, if not all of you, will know Dr Sheena and Dr Sasha from your visits to either of our hospitals and judging by their appointment schedule always being completely booked out, we know that they are 2 very well liked, admired and trusted veterinarians. Both Dr Sheena and Dr Sasha are extremely knowledgeable and dedicated veterinarians and I am excited that they have become leaders of the PRAH and BPVS families for a long time to come. Kate and I don’t plan on going anywhere, anytime soon. Over the past 16 years of our ownership we have had the pleasure of seeing the business grow and thrive and feel that now is the right time to broaden our management team to help us continue to maintain our levels and standards of care and commitment to our clients and their pets. Kate and I have trust that Dr Sheena and Dr Sasha will join us and continue our vision and our core values that focus on you and your pets. So next time you’re in practice, make sure you congratulate our new partners on this exciting milestone in their careers. Dr Nigel Thomas.

19.01.2022 Heterochromia iridis is a condition where animals have different coloured eyes, like Ralph here. Isnt he handsome? The iris of the eye is coloured by melanin (the same as what creates the pigmentation of our skin). Heterochromia occurs when there is a lack or excess of melanin in one eye compared to the other. Catahoula Leopard Dogs like Ralph can have any eye colour or combination of colours including blue, brown, green, or amber. Catahoula's are known for having heter...ochromia which could result in a number of different eye variations. What ever his eye colour ~ we think Ralph is a total stud! #wesharethecare

18.01.2022 WHAT DO I DO IF I FIND A TICK ON MY PET? 1. Stay Calm effected pets cope poorly with stress and overheating 2. Contact us IMMEDIATELY and arrange to bring your pet in DO NOT WAIT until the next morning ~ minutes count. If after hours contact Animal Referral Hospital Brisbane to seek overnight treatment. ... 3. IMPORTANT: Do NOT offer your pet any food or water. The tick toxin can affect your pets ability to swallow and food or water may run straight into their lungs. 4. It is important to seek emergency vet care even if you have removed the tick. The toxin will continue to affect your pet even after removal and timely treatment is still required. #wesharethecare

17.01.2022 Meet the Staff Monday!! Please help us give a very warm PRAH welcome to Dr Michael! Dr Michael comes to us after spending the last 2.5 years at another busy vet practice in Brisbanes Bayside so will be well equipped to working amongst the hustle and bustle of PRAH. Prior to that position, Dr Michael completed an intensive year-long small animal rotating internship at Veterinary Specialist Services with our very own Dr Pauline, so he of course, comes highly recommended. ... What he loves most about veterinary medicine is watching sick animals get back to their normal selves, really loving to sink his teeth into the problem solving aspect of vet science. In his 3 short weeks with us, Dr Michael has already bonded with clients and patients alike and we can tell that his bright, charismatic nature is just the perfect fit for our team. When hes not caring for your pets, in his spare time Dr Michael enjoys a good meal, visiting different restaurants and trying new and exciting cuisines. You might find him swinging a racket on the tennis court, playing a couple of games a week and attending matches when he can. Travel is definitely on his agenda also, so as soon as restrictions lift and travel is back on the table Dr Michael looks forward to putting some more pins in the map. Dr Michael has 2 pet pals at home, a 16yo Cranky Tortie named Rev and a 14yo Border Collie named Hugo who is being medically managed for hypothyroidism. We just know that youre all going to enjoy getting to know Dr Michael. #wesharethecare

17.01.2022 5 Fun Facts About Dalmatians When most people think of Dalmatians, they think of firetrucks, spotted coats, or the movie 101 Dalmatians. But there’s a lot more to know about this breed than meets the eye. 1. Their spots are unique. Similar to your fingerprints or a snowflake, a Dal’s spots are one of a kind. No two Dalmatians have the same pattern or number of spots. ... 2. Dalmatians commonly have black or liver-coloured spots on a white coat, but sometimes these spots can be brindle, blue, orange, or lemon. Their spots cover their entire body, even in their mouth! 3. They were originally bred to be a coach dog. Trained to run alongside carriages, protecting the horses from stray dogs and keeping the horses calm. 4. This is how they became associated with Fire Houses as the Dalmatians were used to serve as coaching dogs for horse-drawn fire coaches. When the fire engine became motorised, the Dalmatian became a mascot for the fireman. 5. They have a genetic predisposition to deafness. Approximately 30% of Dalmatians are deaf or have a hearing impairment. It’s widely believed that the same genes that provide Dalmatians with their coat are to blame for the deafness. #wesharethecare

After spending a little time getting to know Australia through locum vet work throughout Melbourne, Dr... Valerie now calls Brisbane home. Prior to moving to the south side Valerie was working in a small animal vet clinic in Kallangur in Brisbane’s north. Dr Valerie finds the most joy from her work here at PRAH in the surgical theatre - gowned up and operating on patients. Although finding vet medicine rewarding, especially the joy of seeing unwell patients getting better and going home to relieved families, Dr Valerie very much enjoys being scrubbed into surgery, tackling whatever the surgery schedule throws her way. When not working, you’ll find Dr Valerie in the great outdoors! She enjoys rock climbing and usually tries to get outdoors on the weekends with a good group of friends. Did you know that Reptile keeping in Australia is regulated on a state-by-state basis? In most instances, licences must be applied for before a reptile is obtained and there are constraints as to which species can be kept, and in what circumstances. ... The very first thing to do when considering acquiring a snake is to familiarise yourself with the legal requirements in QLD. Nurse Sarah has had Jasper the Jungle Python for 3 years and loves having a snake as a pet. Do you have a snake as a pet at home? Tell us about your scaly friend below.

06.01.2022 Summer Beach Time Fun! For many of us, the summer holidays wouldn’t feel complete without at least one trip to the beach. But can your dog join you for coastal fun? The answer is yes with some planning: Check online to ensure your beach of choice is dog-friendly. ... Before leading your pet onto the beach, check the temperature of the sand with your hand. If it’s too hot for you to comfortably touch for more than ten seconds, it could burn your pet’s feet. Set up camp under a tree or a beach umbrella, so your dog can seek shade if they need it. Make sure you bring extra water and a portable drinking bowl to keep your pet hydrated. If your dog has pink skin around their nose or eyes, protect them from sunburn by applying some pet-safe sunscreen to these areas. Make sure to reapply sunscreen regularly as per the label instructions! For dogs with pink bellies, consider purchasing a sun-suit to protect this larger area of skin. Unless your dog has excellent recall and will stick close to you, it’s best to keep them secured on-leash to avoid them drinking seawater, eating beach debris or accidentally walking over oyster shells - all common reasons for a post-beach vet visit. Do you have a breed of dog predisposed to heat stress, such as a thick-coated retriever or malamute, or a snub-nosed breed such as a French Bulldog, Bulldog or Pug? In these cases, on a hot day, it’s safest to keep your pet indoors with a fan or air-conditioning, and not exercise them at the beach. With these safety precautions, you and your dog can enjoy some summer sun, sand and surf together. #wesharethecare

02.01.2022 Some days as veterinary professionals, the kitten cuddles and doggy high fives are not enough to balance the challenges that we face as we fulfil our duty of care to your pets and the animals within our community. Unfortunately there are dark days amongst the many good ones. There are animals we cannot save, people we cannot please, laws and codes of conduct that bind us that have proven far from popular. But for every unpopular decision where your heart is breaking plea...se know that our hearts are breaking too. Our entire team, from our angels on reception, our compassionate nurses to our extremely dedicated, wise and highly educated veterinarians ~ we are people too. We hurt, we cry, we break too. And while we cannot protect our staff from the hurt that social media can inflict, we will do our utmost to protect them by not tolerating abuse, threats, bullying, offensive or inappropriate behaviour at our hospital. If you'd like to learn more about the challenges that veterinary professionals face every day head to Love Your Pet Love Your Vet and support an organisation that supports us. #wesharethecare

To support this, we have made some important changes across both of ...our hospitals. Now, more than ever, we need your help in implementing the following measures so that our doors can remain open during this time. Our hospital has reverted to a Client Free Zone with clients no longer permitted to accompany their pets into the building. Please utilise the outdoor Reception window for all transactions We are continuing our strict and rigid hygiene protocols in house to enhance your safety and ours.
