22.01.2022 Spiked kangaroo skin running shoes Made by Sweeney, Hope in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 1948. These spiked shoes were made in 1948 by the shoemaker Hope Sweeney of Melbourne who was well known and highly regarded by athletes at that time. They are constructed of cowhide soles, kangaroo skin uppers, and steel spikes. Sweeney would personally measure the athlete's feet and draw a careful outline, so that the shoe was a precise fit. This eliminated any slippage between foot ...and shoe during a sprint. The fit was so close that the shoes could only be endured for the duration of the race. Spiked shoes for running were developed in 1852 and in the early 1890s both Spalding and J.W. Foster and Sons (now known as Reebok) featured spiked footwear in their range. The first athletics meeting in 1868 (Nov 11) in the U.S.A. saw the introduction of spiked running shoes. Four competitors used them in seven events. This pair of leather spiked running shoes is very similar in design to Adi Dassler's (Adidas) early spiked shoes. Within the context of modern athletic shoe development, the shoes are significant as they exemplify the early innovations of sporting footwear using the technology and ideological application of enhancing sporting performance available at that time. Since very early times, human competitive spirit has compelled people to improve their athletic prowess. The development of footwear that would enhance running can be traced back to the ancient games when contestants participated barefoot. As the Greek empire expanded, athletes from colder climates competed in races wearing sandals. Initially, the sandal wearing athletes were treated as a parochial novelty but as shod athletes began winning races, they were viewed with suspicion and branded as cheats. Purpose designed footwear was finally adopted when it was found that shoes actually increased traction and improved running action. https://collection.maas.museum/object/373286

21.01.2022 Brother and Sister Shine in Parkdale Gift On a wet and gloomy day at Gerry Green Reserve, the third Bendigo Community Bank Parkdale Gift has been run and won. ...In front a good crowd and for the first time in the history of professional athletics, siblings Jack and Gabriella Boulton from Wangaratta both saluted in each winning a $5,000 Bendigo Bank Parkdale Gift for men and women. The Boultons have a deep history in professional running with their father Jason winning two Wangaratta Sports Club Gifts. Gabriella was in rich form, winning her home town Gift last weekend and started off a handicap of 9.5m and favourite. In the final Boulton proved strong to win by two metres from Warrnambools Hannah Duynhoven (13m) and Ballarats Tiana Shillito 3rd in 14.30 seconds. Brother Jack was equal to the task and defeated a top-class field that included 2019 defending champion Luke Stevens and reigning Stawell Gift winner Dhruv Rodrigues Chico (scratch). The final was all class with Boulton (6m) also winning by two metres in a time of 12.72 from Melbournes Jara Koneth (3m) and Max Punchihewa (9.75m) in third place. Both Boultons will now set their sights on the world-famous Easters Stawell Gift. Other highlights for the day included the Helloworld Travel Parkdale 800m handicap for Women. This was Australias richest 800m race and provided an opportunity for the Australian Record Holder Catriona Bissett to make her debut. Bisset was impressive in her heat but in the final, the handicap of scratch proved too great with the event being taken out by the Australian Champion over 1600m Whitney Sharp (42m). Sharps impressive time on a heavy track of 2:06.09 defeated training partners Sophie O'Sullivan (38) and Australian representative Sarah Billings (32) for third. Bisset finished a strong seventh. The local crowd favourite event the Hodges Mentone Real-Estate footballers relay race for men and womens was a huge success. Crowd support reached fever pitch as St Bedes Mentone FC claimed Back to Back victories in the race over Mordi Brae FC. In the womens Ballarats POD Squad defeated St Bedes Mentone Football Club in a tightly fought contest. Our thanks for all our sponsors at Parkdale in 2020. Plans for the 2021 event have already begun. Let's recap a few shots.

16.01.2022 Melbourne Stawell Gift winning trainer Nick Fiedler (trainer of athlete Sam Jamieson 2008) sent me a photo this week of a statue from a friend of his who was making his way through outback Queensland and stumbled upon the town of Hebel. Here he saw a statue of athletes Tom Dancey and sent a two photos of Tom to Nick - He was an Aboriginal stockman who won Australia's most famous footrace, the Stawell Gift.
