01.01.2022 ***5 Tips to help your Resume stand out from the crowd*** As an employer of over 25 staff, I’ve done my share or hiring over the past 8-9 years. Yesterday before I left the office, I placed an advert for a carpenter and when I got in this morning I had over 60 resumes sitting in my inbox. This is the first time I have seen so many people apply so fast.... It got me thinking, about all the hard working tradesmen out there looking for work in a market starting to slow, so I thought I would leave a few tips to help you stand out from the crowd in these situations. 1. Length of resume Keep it to 1 or 2 pages at the very most. There are some that are 3,4,5 pages or more in length and when there is 60+ resumes to assess, the reader is not going to go beyond the first page or 2. You need to be able to sell yourself as the right candidate very quickly. 2. Tailor your resume You need to tailor your resume to every job application as they are all different. If the advert is looking for commercial carpenters, then list your commercial experience and avoid your residential experience. If the advert Is looking for residential carpenters, then list your residential experience. 3. The Role If the advert is looking for carpenters then talk about how you are the best carpenter out there. Over 50% of applications we receive list their experience as a supervisor even though we are not looking for supervisors. There are many reasons why this can put an employer off. There will be plenty of opportunity to talk about your supervisory experience on a phone call or F2F meeting. 4. Specific Requirements Pay attention to specific requirements of the advert such as a specific email address to send your application to or weather to submit your resume in PDF or Word. These often-missed requirements are to check that you can follow instruction. 5. Clean & Tidy Consider the use of borders, colour, dot points & your photograph to help you stand out from the crowd. All the best & feel free to share, Simon.
