11.01.2022 Flu season is upon us Influenza (flu) is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads easily from person to person through coughing, sneezing and close contact.... Unlike a cold, symptoms such as fever, sore throat and muscle aches develop suddenly with flu and last about a week. In some cases, severe illness and complications such as pneumonia and bronchitis can develop, which can result in hospitalisation and even death. The flu can also make some existing medical conditions worse. The flu virus can be especially dangerous for elderly people, pregnant women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and very young children, as well as for people with underlying medical conditions. 04.01.2022 Shingles vaccine Zostavax to be provided FREE for 70-79 year olds from 1st November 2016 The shingles vaccine, Zostavax, has been approved to be placed on the National Immunisation Program (NIP), to be provided free of charge from 1 November 2016 to people aged 70 years, subject to vaccine supply. There will also be a five year catch-up program for people aged 71 79 years. The implementation of new vaccination programs under the NIP is a major task that takes approximatel...y 12-18 months from receipt of Government funding approval. This time is required for activities such as the procurement of vaccine; vaccine safety surveillance planning; development of appropriate communications; and negotiation with states and territories regarding implementation requirements and timing.
