19.01.2022 Park Hyatt Sydney tells the story of Sydney. Located in the historic Rocks area, our unique harbour backdrop and surrounding natural landscape shaped the inspiration of the hotels aesthetic design. Eight Australian artists were carefully selected to create a fine collection of photographs, paintings and sculptures to reflect Australias many unique characteristics. This is our Janus Head by Bruce Armstrong. The Janus Head sculpture represents the relationship between Governo...r Arthur Phillip and Bennelong. One side of the Janus head features Bennelong, with Captain Phillip on the other side. Made of native red gum timber, the sculpture tells the story of the close friendship forged between Bennelong, the Chief of the Aboriginal tribe which inhabited The Rocks area and Governor Phillip, Captain of the First Fleet and the first Governor of New South Wales, who arrived in Sydney in 1788. Governor Phillip also gave Sydney its name. Bennelong, a local tribesman, was brought to the settlement at Sydney Cove by Governor Phillip in the effort to learn the native language and customs of the indigenous people. Bennelong stayed in the settlement for approximately six months before he escaped. He eventually returned and renewed contact with Governor Phillip as a free man. Bennelong learned to speak English and maintained a good relationship with the colony. Governor Phillip built Bennelong a hut on what became known as Bennelong Point, now the site of the Sydney Opera House. In 1872 he travelled to England with Governor Phillip. In Greek mythology, Janus was the god of beginnings, endings and transitions. He is usually depicted as having two faces looking in opposite directions. Symbolically, they look simultaneously to the past and the future.

Across all relevant departments at a majority of hotels, we are stepping up the frequency of inspections by independent third parties in reliance upon standards of hygiene and safety such as ISO 22000 and HACCP.
