24.01.2022 Dethatch or not to dethatch. What is thatch? Thatch is an accumulation of living and dead organic matter that builds up on top of the soil surface around the base of the lawn. A thin layer of thatch is beneficial for your lawn, as it provides a mulch effect layer for moisture retention and helps to insulate against soil temperature fluctuations. But thatch can become a problem when build up happens faster than it can break down. Too much accumulated thatch reduces the amount ...of air, water and nutrients that can get down into your soil. How do I know if my lawn requires dethatching? Some of the signs to look out for; Poor grass colour and thinning lawn areas. Spongy lawn areas, noticeable when walking on or mowing. Topsoil surface is not visible through your lawn. Use a rake on a small area and see how much material comes out of the lawn. Generally, if the rake is pulling out a lot of material, dethatching would be required. You could also cut a section of lawn using a spade and visually inspect. More than 15 to 25 mm of thatch build up for most lawn types is considered too much. How do I dethatch my lawn? Small areas of lawn can be done with a rake. De-thatching rakes will give a better result compared to general purpose rakes. Larger lawn areas will require the use of power rakes or dethatching machine. The thatch material removed from the lawn areas will need to be picked up and discarded. When should I dethatch my lawn? The ideal time to dethatch your lawn is during the growing season, typically early in spring for cool season grasses, and later in spring for warm season grasses. The dethatching process is harsh on your lawn and the immediate result are not aesthetically pleasing. Completing during your lawns growing season will give your lawn the best chance of recovering. So, I have dethatched my lawn, now what? For best result’s and a quicker recovery, dethatching should be followed up by fertilizing and watering.

16.01.2022 It is well known that top dressing is beneficial your lawn. But, for best results, you need to use a nutrient rich product. It appears to be an age old practice to top dress lawns with sand. This is fine on the odd occasion to help drainage issues, but consider the effects of applying sand year after year without adding nutrients to the soil. The correct balance of nutrients, sunlight and water is the key to your lawns health. Topdressing with good quality compost replace’s much needed nutrients used up by your lawn during growing, resulting in a heathy, happier lawn.

16.01.2022 Basalt crusher dust contains minerals which, on weathering, release elements of calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium and phosphorus. This is the reason your lawn responds well initially when crusher dust is used. But before you race to your local landscape centre, consider the long term effects of using crusher dust. In the building industry, crusher dust is used as a base in trenches for plumbers, as well as before pouring concrete, because it packs down nice and hard. This means, when it packs down under your lawn, the roots will not be able to penetrate very well. Also consider the effect it will have on your mower blades or aeration equipment.

16.01.2022 During the dry months late last year, we have been in the workshop making a chute attachment for the spreader. The width is adjustable from 100ml to 250ml. We think this chute will greatly reduce the labour costs for back filling slumped trench’s and beside concrete path’s. It could also be useful for small scale horticulture row crops, such as strawberries, lettuce, carrots or cauliflower?? Maybe even spreading grain for livestock??

15.01.2022 What a great way to kickstart the season with a load of Bio Blitz organic compost. Bring on the rain!

14.01.2022 Did you know; The first mechanical lawn mower was invented by Edwin Beard Budding, 1830 in England. This lawn mower superseded hand shears and the scythe. It was pushed from behind by two people and had cast iron gears to transfer the power from the rear roller to a cutting cylinder. Edwin signed with James Ferrabee, owner of the Phoenix Iron Works to manufacture the machine. It took more than 10 years before a mower was invented that could be pulled by an animal, and sixty years until a steam powered lawn mower was built.

09.01.2022 If you haven’t already, now is good time to think about raising your mowing height. During winter, the sun is out for less time, so your lawn has less benefit from the photosynthesis process. Photosynthesis is the process of your lawn using the heat energy, carbon dioxide and moisture to make food through a chemical process. Raising your mowing height during the winter months provides more leaf surface area to access the sunlight, hence increasing the food available to your lawn. As a general guide, warm season grasses like Kikuyu, Couch and Buffalo should be mowed to a height of around 20 to 40mm during winter months.

09.01.2022 We are fast approaching top dressing season, and we have already had a number of inquiries. To avoid disappointment, make contacting Parkland Topdressing a priority so we can schedule you in.

03.01.2022 Watch out for lawn grubs! Lawn grubs are most active during the warmer months from Oct April. They are particularly good at targeting lush green lawns following decent rainfall. In the past, treating lawn grubs with a knockdown insecticide such as Bifenthrin was common practice, but would only kill the grubs currently in your lawn and offer no ongoing protection. Nowadays, a new product called Acelepryn GR can be applied in early spring and will provide up to 6 months residual activity against lawn grub invasion. The product is extremely safe to use and provides protection against a wide range of insect pests. So if you would like peace of mind knowing that your lawn is protected from grubs talk to Parkland Topdressing about applying Acelepryn GR in early spring 2020 to provide 6 month residual protection during the next growing season.
